1. Hi guys, I'm looking for to buy a Jazz bass, and I'm heading to the shops this week-end to try a couple. What model / brand would you recommend I should try? I'll be limited by what's available in Bristol. My budget is up to £1000. I'll probably buy second hand. Please only reply if you've had experience with different jazz basses. I'm really after the opinion of people with a bit of experience with different instruments. One model I've heard good things about is the Lakland DJ. I haven't tried it, but I'm considering buying one second hand unseen as so many things appeal to me: smaller body, good neck, good fretwork, and apparently it nails both the classic Jazz tone and the modern Marcus tone with a preamp. Cheers, V.

 3. I never understood the point of the IMRM technique. The middle finger does as much work as IM so it defies the objective. I can understand the advantages of IMR, RMI, or adding the thumb TIMR. I personally use IM, RMI, and RMIT. That said, unless you're into fusion / virtuoso style bass playing, I cannot see myself recommending 3/4 finger techniques to somebody still starting on the instrument, better stick to IM to start with. And maybe learn to use a pick.
Also for right hand you could try using 3 fingers, not the ring, middle, index triplets everyone does but index, middle, ring, middle.. etc. Try leading with a different finger each time. Its great for steady pedal notes.. ZZ Top style!
4. What a fantastic album! This is usually the one I first recommend when people want to find out about Meshell. Thanks for the transcriptions, V.
Been working on this on and off for a while and finally got round to finishing it. I know there are a few Me'Shell fans here so I thought I'd post it. Not the entire album, but a selection of grooves from most of the tracks. The feel of some of the lines and fills can't really be done justice in notation (not by me, at least!), particularly when it comes to slides, trills and other ornaments. Comments, corrections and suggestions are always welcome Tom
5. still available...
No thanks, I'm OK with amps at the moment :-)
6. Hi guys, thanks for the comments. It is really a classic. Still available! Cheers, V.
 7. Hi guys, as you've probably seen I'm trying to sell my Stingray at the moment. I originally just wanted to sell it locally as I've never shipped a bass (or anything else as big, just small parcels). I've realised it limits the amount of potential buyers and am now considering shipping the bass. Rather than spending a couple of hours checking out all possible options, I wanted to ask you guys who do you tend to use for shipping? Do you bring the bass to a depot? Do the shipping company comes and collect from home? What is a good/average price to pay? What companies do you recommend / not recommend? Please share your experience - I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in this! Thanks, Valere
 8. No thanks, I'm OK with amps at the moment :-)
How about a Part ex for this Trace Elliot rig. 9. No thanks, I'm really after a sadowsky :-)
would you be interested in a sandberg basic plus cash?
10. No, sorry... In term of trade, or trade+cash, my preference would be for: - sadowsky - jazz bass: US, or road worn Still available at £700 in Bristol.
I'll take that as a no?
11. To be honest, if you're just starting on the instrument, I wouldn't worry too much. Just buy something that's cheap and just "playable" and allows you to learn your fingerings. After a year or so, you will have sufficient experience to buy a "proper" bass. You can resell your old bass for the same price. I think the sweet spot in term of value for money is probably around £1K/£1.5K For that price you can get a carved or semi carved chinese bass. Add £100 for a set of spiros or helicore, £200 for a set-up (shooting the fingerboard, sound post adjustment, maybe replacing the nut or the tailpiece) and you're sorted. My first bass was an absolute dog, that I bought for £200. I resold it with a profit 2 years after when I got my current bass (carved, Korean).
 12. Bienvenu de la part d'un autre frenchy a Bristol (UK)! V.

 14. Hi guys, I've realised I've started posting in BassChat (and selling/buying stuff) without introducing myself. My name is Valere Speranza. I am French, based in Bristol UK. I've been on the south west jazz scene for almost 10 years now and have played with most of the jazzers in the Bristol area. My most regular gigs with are the Ruth Hammond band and the Dave Betts Quintet, and a lot of last minute gigs with put together bands. I tend to gig 2/3 times a week, and occasionally teach mature bass players who want to get into more advanced styles (Jazz/Latin/Funk). Gear wise I use a old fretted Yamaha BB1600 (with TI flats), and a fretless Yamaha BB1600. My backup is a MusicMan Stingray. My upright is a 10 years old korean carved bass that I absolutly love. My amps are a GKMB150-E (for upright and quiet electric bass gigs) and a trace elliot Commando 15 combo. For effects I use a Line 6 Bass POD XT, mainly as a tuner, tube preamp and octaver. This a great forum and I hope to have interesting discussions with you guys! Cheers, V. PS: my website is http://www.valeresperanza.com
 15. Well, I guess you can get a similar tone with a Jazz, a stingray or any bass with a bridge pickup. Experiment with using the bridge pickup - and adding a little bit of the neck pickup is required. There's a lot of mids, so I guess you could boost the mids or your bass and/or amp and roll off the treble. There is some fatness in his sound, so I guess a humbucker (e.g. a Stingray/Wall) might be better than a Jazz but I could be wrong. Picking closer to the bridge would help (alla Jaco) to bring out the growl/mids. Hope it helps. V.
Hi, I though I posted this last night, but I can't see it anywhere. Probly closed BC down while in the preview page . . d'oh! So, even though I don't have Flea's fingers and GK rig, I'm sure I'll still be able to get something similar to his tone on Alanis' You Oughta Know. I'm guessing it's on the back pick-up, bass rolled off & mids boosted, with plenty of damping with the left & right hand fingers? Our new girl singer is pretty good, and I know the rest of the band will have nailed their parts for this, so any help is apreciated . . . Thanks, Mark
22. Hi guys, I'm selling my stingray. Here are the details: - 3EQ models - Late 90s model - very good condition - 4 strings - maple neck - Had a recent pro set-up. I bought this bass new in 1998 in Chicago. I gigged with it for a while, but I used it as a backup after I got my Yamaha BB1600. I've used it very little after that apart from the occasional session. I hand picked this bass out of 10 rays that where available in the shop, as not only was it gorgeous with the natural finish, it was also the best sounding one! Natural finish rays are more expensive new as the wood used for the body is supposed to be better I've been told. In term of sounds, I've used this bass on this CD http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/hutchinson "Nature take me in her arms" and "Homeless in hollywood" have got a bass friendly mix. Cash on collection in Bristol. Cheers, Valere
