  1. I personally don't like these units. Thank you anyway.
  2. I've actually had my eye on that device for quite some time.
  3. Because I'll be performing more often in the future, I'm currently rethinking my setup and want to follow a no-nonsense approach. I own several tube preamps/DIs, but they're too sensitive for my liking for touring. I've recently heard stories of tubes failing mid-set, and I'd rather not experience that. So, I'd be interested to know what your favorite tube-sounding DI/preamp is, one that doesn't actually use tubes. Price isn't the primary concern right now. I'm looking forward to your replies!
  4. My story took place in the early 90s. It was a different time. Fortunately, I'm generally less prone to addiction and was never a big fan of drugs. I started experimenting early and stopped just as quickly. I didn't like most of it, and some things I liked too much to make a habit of. By the time I was 20, I was done with drugs. Your band sounds like a mix of The Fall and Dead Kennedys. I really like it!
  5. Drugs were important for music. Without them, many things simply wouldn't exist. But this shouldn't be glorified; drugs have caused just as much suffering and misery. In my first band - I was 15 years old -, rehearsals were basically parties. We drank an unbelievable amount of beer and smoked just as much weed. We often had girls over whom we'd met the night before at a club or a concert and thought we could impress. When I listen to the recordings today (we recorded practically everything), I can only laugh at our youthful stupidity. What we produced in a state of mental derangement was absolute garbage. Nevertheless, we managed to get good enough to play gigs regularly, which kept getting bigger. For a while, we were even relatively successful. Then two things happened that have shaped my opinion about sobriety in a band to this day. 1. We got so incredibly drunk before a big gig that it was a complete embarrassment. We kept messing up and had to restart songs. Between songs, I told stories that I thought were hilarious and clever at the time. They weren't. When I listened to the recording the next day, I was deeply ashamed. 2. One of the band members became increasingly addicted to cocaine and showed the usual symptoms. He told everyone that he was the "star" and we were just his backing band. When we found out, we fired him. That was the end of the band. Funny fact: He's a doctor now. Since then, I've never drunk more than a small beer before a gig. Excessive alcohol or even drug use is out of the question for me in a band. Not only because you can't get anything done, but also because I don't want those kinds of people around me.
  6. 1968 was the transition from Rocksteady to Reggae. One of my favorite tracks of this short period is this one.
  7. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder (1991)
  8. That's why I wrote that both approaches are fine. The discussion about expensive vs. cheap pedals is fundamentally pointless.
  9. This is a very old debate that I always find a bit tedious. Some people are only concerned with pure functionality, and yes, the VTDI is perfectly adequate for that, because you can't hear the difference in a live situation anyway. Others (myself included) want that little bit extra, that look and feel. That's not rational, but it's fun. I, for example, find the VTDI very ugly, so I use other preamps. Both approaches are fine.
  10. The Stone Roses were one of the most important bands of my life. I used to play along to Mani's bass lines in my childhood bedroom. 63 really isn't old. That's very sad.
  11. I really like the concept of the Phil Jones combos. Am I correct in understanding that the 450/250 watt model with the 5" speakers is the most powerful? Are 5" speakers really big enough for a live performance?
  12. Thanks for the detailed insight. Even though that sounds very good, I'll probably keep my Grand Slampegg.
  13. I'm very curious about the result.
  14. I've been lurking here for a while, so, I'd like to introduce myself now. I've been playing bass for 37 years and in bands for 35 of them. Due to lack of time, I've had to take breaks now and then, but I've never stopped playing. I've just started a new project with friends. Stylistically, I've almost always played in the realms of 80s indie pop/shoegaze and soul/rhythm and blues. You might be able to guess one of my favorite bands from my profile picture. My current instruments - both from the 90s - are a MIJ and a MIA Fender Precision Bass. Both with LaBella 760FL strings. The amp is an Ampeg PF-450 with the matching 15" cabinet, which I only use for practicing. I've been playing ampless for years. I'm a bit particular about pedals and have way too many, so my setup is always changing. Currently, the signal chain looks like this: Peterson StroboStomp HD - Diamond Bass Compressor - Origin Effects Bassrig Super Vintage. I hope that wasn't too detailed. Anyway, I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions.
  15. If that's really the case, that's very good news.
