That's why I wrote that both approaches are fine. The discussion about expensive vs. cheap pedals is fundamentally pointless.

This is a very old debate that I always find a bit tedious. Some people are only concerned with pure functionality, and yes, the VTDI is perfectly adequate for that, because you can't hear the difference in a live situation anyway. Others (myself included) want that little bit extra, that look and feel. That's not rational, but it's fun. I, for example, find the VTDI very ugly, so I use other preamps. Both approaches are fine.

The Stone Roses were one of the most important bands of my life. I used to play along to Mani's bass lines in my childhood bedroom. 63 really isn't old. That's very sad.

I really like the concept of the Phil Jones combos. Am I correct in understanding that the 450/250 watt model with the 5" speakers is the most powerful? Are 5" speakers really big enough for a live performance?

I've been lurking here for a while, so, I'd like to introduce myself now. I've been playing bass for 37 years and in bands for 35 of them. Due to lack of time, I've had to take breaks now and then, but I've never stopped playing. I've just started a new project with friends. Stylistically, I've almost always played in the realms of 80s indie pop/shoegaze and soul/rhythm and blues. You might be able to guess one of my favorite bands from my profile picture. My current instruments - both from the 90s - are a MIJ and a MIA Fender Precision Bass. Both with LaBella 760FL strings. The amp is an Ampeg PF-450 with the matching 15" cabinet, which I only use for practicing. I've been playing ampless for years. I'm a bit particular about pedals and have way too many, so my setup is always changing. Currently, the signal chain looks like this: Peterson StroboStomp HD - Diamond Bass Compressor - Origin Effects Bassrig Super Vintage. I hope that wasn't too detailed. Anyway, I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions.
