2. icastle - Please accept my apologies for not thanking you earlier for your suggestion - that was very rude of me. When I get my hands on the amp again (it's currently in another country) I will take a good look at the inside of it to check the fuses. Thanks again, tww
3. Hi - I bought a second-hand (but in mint condition) Laney RB4 combo a couple of years ago. I used it regularly for rehearsals and gigs over a period of 18 months. I then left the band and let the singer borrow it (and a bass) so that she could learn a bit of bass for a couple songs whilst the replacement bassist sang. Now the amp isn't working - I tried when I was due to stand in with band. It switches on, but only hums slightly and does nothing else - no lights or output. The singer swears that she didn't even use it or let anything happen to it. It looks in the same condition as when I left it with her. I trust her. Also, even though I was careful with it, I wasn't precious about it and gave it some rough treatment now and again - the odd drop and bump. Do you any of you have an idea as to what might have gone wrong? Any suggestions welcome. It wasn't the greatest combo in the world, but it did the trick when required.
4. Great song - hadn't heard it before. Lovely tone. Thanks for sharing.
5.
Steve Perry (vocals) Tommy Shaw (gtr/bv's) Neal Schon (lead guitar) Todd Sucherman & Deen Castronovo (double drummers) Neil Peart (percussion) Steve Porcaro (keys) Tower Of Power horns, Memphis horns & Chicago horns (one massive horn section!)
It must be my Friday afternoon mood, but the idea of Neil Peart being relegated to percussion in favour of double drummers made me chuckle (no offence to all the percussionists out there...). Are you sure he'd take the job?
6. Having discovered Melody Nelson during my time in France, I thought that Herbie Flowers was involved with it. This was based on a discussion with a French friend who was a big fan. On a side note, if you are at all interested in Serge Gainsbourg, you should really check out "Aux Armes Etc", his reggae album recorded in Kingston (Jamaica, not Surrey) with Sly and Robbie and other reggae luminaries.
7. Somewhere down-market such as Westone-Super-Mare.
8. +1 on LDN by Lily Allen. Currently, Marina and the Diamonds 'I Am Not A Robot' is my favourite. I love her voice. As for something a bit older, The Cure 'Friday I'm In Love' and AC/DC 'You Shook Me...'.
9. Well, we did it. Unfortunately, the weather was dodgy - a sea mist was rolling in so we didn't quite get the "sunset at the beach" vibe we expected. Still, there were plenty of saggy over 50s who really should have been dressed. We played on the terrace of the Sun Beach bar - see the second photo in the "diaporama" here: Cap d'Agde, Rene Oltra My concentration was definitely affected by some of the sights - in one corner, an naked older man had his hand between the legs of a naked younger man and was giving him, ahem, a little massage..., I also cracked up when a naked, saggy 50yr old wandered in front of us his with his "junk" wobbling about. I arrived late with the singer (and her husband who was there to protect her...) and spent 10 minutes driving through the camp site trying to find the entrance to the bar. Our tour around the site was "interesting". Lots of saggy, mostly shaved, mostly older people. Lots of naked men and women on bikes - this doesn't look so easy for men in the saddle area. Also, as it was a cooler evening, there were plenty of people in t-shirts and nothing else... what's that all about? Naked from the waist down only... On the other hand, this was basically normal naturist behaviour - people being naked and free. Though, I couldn't help laughing... After the gig (which, to be honest, wasn't great - I think we were all distracted), we stayed on to have a meal and check out the night life in the bars, clubs and restaurants. Here, the men were dressed quite conservatively, but many of the women were in tight fitting short dresses and high heels, displayed varying amounts of flesh. Apparently, underwear was in short supply. My overall impression? The place was as expected, based on what I had been told. I found it all quite amusing. But also it's great that there's a place where people can go and do as they please, be uninhibited and let it all hang out. Next time I'll take the wife. Sorry - no photos that show anything of interest - it really didn't seem appropriate to take pictures. And I'm not sure it would have been welcomed.
10.
You do realise that this is also a swingers venue and not just "lifestyle" naturists?
I have been forewarned - fortunately, we're playing to the early evening, pre-dinner crowd before the night really gets going. Apparently things get quite fruity later on in the evening. However, we're staying on to eat afterwards, so I might see some sights... I'll be avoiding the darkened rooms at the back of the bars/clubs, as well as not venturing out into the dunes after nightfall. I'm not ready to swing. Photos will be available if at all possible!
11. Tonight our band is playing at the local naturist camp at Cap d'Agde on the south-east French coast. The venue is a bar at a naturist camp site. Cap d'Agde is well-known for it's naturist facilities and attracts people from all over Europe, especially Germans. I'm guessing that concentrating on playing the bass might be difficult when confronted with a naked/semi-naked audience. To answer the most obvious question, no, I will not be hiding naked behind my bass as I expect to be dressed, as will the rest of the band.
12. Musicalement, bonjour! Et bienvenue.
13.
Indeed He's amusical tart. Been all over and still does. Even wears tartan and play a bass on some evenings (with other bands that is, not us ) So how do you know him? PS not sure if he has an e or not
I worked with him at a small software company in Guildford from 1989 to 1996 - he'd been there for many years before me, and possibly many years after too. Seeing his face on your website was a real blast from the past - fortunately they're good memories! We used to talk guitars in those days, before I saw the light! It's just strange to come across him again after all this time, from so far away. You can tell him Tim W says "Hi".
14. Hey OldGit - I just looked on the Jellied Reels website - is that David Good (without an 'e' - is that correct?) in the photo?. I daren't check any further on your site in case I confirm my suspicions and find myself travelling back in time to a previous existence where we worked together for many years... I feel a case of the Twilight Zone coming on...
15.
Your supposed to not play in the first verse ..
Well, that's what I thought! On a serious note, is it just the first verse? I usually only play for the chorus and the solo, and avoid the verses. I use the verses to do some dancing in the style of Bill Wyman... ( - song idea #73 - (Si Si) Je Suis Un Rock Star)
16.
well, some different female frenchness...
Different female frenchness is good. Johnny and Vanessa are still an item AFAIK. The France Gall song is familiar. AIR's very mellow - haven't heard that for a while.
and err..... St Etienne.....well it's a half decent french football team I'll get my coat!
Tenuous links are good too... but why's keyboard player #1 wearing an Espana shirt? Whilst we're at it, why hasn't anyone suggested Depeche Mode? Thanks everyone so far for the ideas - I didn't have time on Tuesday before the rehearsal to sort out a list, but this coming Monday is a public holiday in France, so I'm just putting getting the list for the singer and she says she'll take a look over it before next Tuesday (actually, just remembered the rehearsal's been moved to Thursday).
17. You're all stars! I'm rehearsing tonight so I will have a chat with the singer about all your ideas. Tonight we're trying "Gimme Shelter" - which is actually a Stones song with a female vocal part (apparently Merry Clayton, who also sang on "Sweet Home Alabama" - according to Wikipedia). But, I want to move us back into this decade/century with some of your suggestions.
Mind you the bass player forgets to not play in the verses
I always forget to play in the verses - this gives me more hands free to play the cowbell... And, yes, the song actually works with our female vocalist.
18. Now That's What I Call A Reply! Thanks Oldgit for loads of really good ideas. Chrissie Hynde had been mentioned a few weeks ago but fallen off the radar out of forgetfulness. The other blokes in the band always seem to come up with blokey ideas, whereas me (a bloke too, it has to be said) and the singer (most definitely not a bloke) are always keen to introduce something more feminine. I'll play anything with a good tune. As for Ca Plane Pour Moi .... peut-etre pas, mais merci!
19. Hi, I've been playing with a covers band for the last 9 months and we've got to the point where we need to expand our set list. We currently have about 1.5 hours worth of material, but we're looking to add some new stuff. So, I thought some of you might have good suggestions for songs that are a) fairly easy to learn (we're all competent musicians, but not musical geniuses), crowd pleasers and c) fun to play. The band consists of two guitars, bass, drums and female vocals. To give you an idea of what we play, our set includes "Honky Tonk Woman", "Long Train Runnin'", "You Really Got Me", "Steady, As She Goes", "Back in the USSR", "Dancin' Till Dawn (Lenny Kravitz)", "Highway to Hell/All Right Now medley" and "One". As you can see, we tend towards 60s/70s rock, but we've also considered "Should I Stay or Should I Go" as an example of something slightly more modern, and have been working on "Heavy Cross" by Gossip. I'm open to suggestions from any era. Also, I'm the sole Englishman in a group of French (although the lead singer is an English and she speaks/sings English extremely well), so I'd be interested in French songs too - a bit of Serge Gainsbourg might be interesting! Apologies if this has been covered somewhere else on Basschat - if so, please direct me to it - I searched but couldn't find anything (although I remembering once seeing a really interesting thread here on reggae songs once that was fantastic even if I hadn't heard of most of the songs). Cheers, Tim
20.
They did them in some great whacky colours too!
Mine's Graffiti Yellow! It's my "Sunday best" guitar. Apparently (from www.electricguitartrends.com): "According to The Stratocaster Book, in late 1986 Jeff Back asked Fender to make a custom Stratocaster painted the same color as the hot rod in the movie American Graffiti. Fender named the color Graffiti Yellow."
21. Thanks for sharing that! BMW's April's Fool - as usual creative and with the zeitgeist: http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/about/news/0,,1...258900_,00.html
22. Salut et bienvenue! Heureusement, Sarkoland est sans Sarko pendant deux jours - il est parti en Obamaland!
23. Cannonball - The Breeders Steady, As She Goes - The Raconteurs
24. Bienvenue! Tes basses sont magnifiques! Versailles? Ch’est (preschque) le Nord… , moi, je suis dans l’Hérault, donc un plus au Sud. Malheureusement, il pleut aujourd’hui – mais le soleil reviendra ce week-end.
