  1. There are a quite few basses out there that are much loved by there owners and sound great but personally I wouldn’t go anywhere near for no other reason apart from don’t like the way it looks

  2. Thanks to everyone who has given advice so far. I’m reading and doing as much research as possible.

I’m going to be setting new laptop up soon as get chance (looking forward to that about as much as I’m dreading it 😜) and on the look for an interface next stop. Headphones or stereo (I’ve got a decent hifi but as I’ve read not ideal for recording purposes as it will tend to cover up things you might want to adjust but I’m guessing that I’m light years away from being able to tell the difference so all good for now)

im I right in saying that most brought new interfaces will come with some sort of get you started DAW ?

Keeping it short, there are two things you'll 'need' for doing this. The first is an interface between the instrument and the laptop, the second is a Digital Audio Workstation (abbreviated to 'DAW'...); a programme that'll take what comes through the interface and record it onto your hard disk.
Taking the interface first, have a look at this one, to give you some idea; it's a popular one which will do the job very well...

    Scarlett 2i2 Interface ...

Once you've looked at that one, have a look at similar ones and choose one that suits you and your pocket.
For a DAW, have a look at this one ...

    Reaper DAW ...

Similarly, when you've read through that, look at others of the same sort and see if you're still inspired.
You may have other questions once you've done that, but you'll get answers here. There is an excellent '101' guide in the Recording section of the Forum, here ...

The Beginner's Guide to Home Recording
    ...which is recommended reading.

Detail stuff, such as cables for connecting, which connection system (USB, Thunderbolt, other tripe...) will be dealt with as and when the situation calls for it.

There, short enough..? Hope this helps. B|

Thank you. I’ll get on with reading ASAP. Thanks for your help

  4. I’ll keep it short but basically I was luck enough to get a nice new laptop for Christmas. So I’m looking for I don’t know what. I need education. What I’m wanting to do is to be able to plug my bass/guitar into my computer and have some sort of recording software that will allow me to record ideas and forward them onto band members. It doesn’t have to be pro level gear. Of course if the software has rough drum tracks and the option of the odd effect here and there bonus.

I really don’t know what I want or need or what it’s likely to cost so any replys you are talking to mr clueless in this department so please be gentle 😜

    thanks in advance

  5. After reading another thread about acoustic bass strings, I’ve always had bronze on my acoustic, mine are coated so no finger noise but after recently playing a gig with it (not the sort of bass you play every day) the realisation of how clunky and noisy they are hit home. I’ve got s set of chromes waiting to go on anyways.

Ah ... now that would be a deal-breaker for me if that was the case. The last thing I'd need would be a bit of neck dive.

If you have never tried one give it a go, mine retrofitted so no extra holes to drill or leave exposed when/if you take it off. I personally didn’t get on with it. Just a gadget to do a job that I can do with out one. There are enough people who do like them so guess they have a purpose

    Thank you, @danny-79

The MXR cables i use are on neither list but they serve me well. 6" long, flat plugs.

Right at the start he listed a load of companies that he approached who for what ever reason were unwilling to participate in the test MXR was one

This is the dilema I'm having at the moment. Is it easier to just drop down using the tuning peg (by ear) or invest in a Hipshot.

Drop it down by ear it’s much easier. I had a Hipshot D tuner and couldn’t get on with it. Lots of fiddling about setting it then I found that after a few back an forths I was needing to adjust it all again. Plus it’s extra weight on the headstock.

    Definatly not  a fan

Could you provide a summary? I hate to sound like a modern-day moron, but I don't have 35 minutes. I can actually focus for that long, but I will not have that much uninterrupted time for a while!

There was/is no perfect cable. Everything is a trade off, bigger plugs better insulation, less room on board etc etc

A couple of screen shots of the summing up at the end

    That's good to know!

Do you know what kind of frequency it is set up at or any other details?

It can potentially explain why some feel the Stingray lacks a bit of bottom end, if they tried a 3-band and they're used to something a bit... girthier. I have only played 2-band Stingrays, really, and I find it difficult to imagine someone could feel they lack bottom end.

thats the pick up I’m using in both StingRays
