Hello All. I've received a message from a friend of mine earlier today saying a Jetglo 4001 with a JB pickup in the bridge position appeared on Facebook UK marketplace this morning. However, the listing seems to have disappeared and does not also appear under the 'Sold' category. I didn't get a notification from Facebook about a new listing (no surprise there though, considering how ropey that place is) and I can't see a duplicate listing on Ebay, Reverb or Gumtree or in the 'For Sale' sections here and on Talk Bass, which is often the case. So, I don't suppose, on the off chance, that was it was listed by someone who is also a member here? Please feel free to let me know. Thanks.

Is there a popular bass player, that you just don’t get?
AMV001 replied to Rayman's topic in General Discussion
I couldn't agree more. I was a young lad in the early 80's and only familiar with his Motorhead output (mainly the Overkill, Bomber, Ace Of Spades and No Sleep albums) when I learned about his previous career with Hawkwind. I was recommended to start with Space Ritual and I was astonished at how fluid and melodic his bass parts were compared to Motorhead. 'Lord Of Light' is an excellent example, which is pretty much built around an excellent meandering bassline. 'Down Through The Night' and the high parts of 'Space Is Deep' are of a similar quality. But he gives a great performance on the whole album. Especially so given the number of...er...inspirations the band were habitually partaking in on a daily basis. -
Yep, this is what I'd go for too.

This. Puts around 25% on the purchase price of the instrument. If I was you I'd pad out the old case and bring it back on the plane and saunter nonchalantly through 'Nothing To Declare' at Heathrow. Not that I'm encouraging tax avoidance, of course.

ABC Music Retail from the 1980’s , any memories ?
AMV001 replied to BritBass 2's topic in General Discussion
I bought a Rickenbacker 4001 from ABC Music on St Clements, Oxford in 1989. My first proper famous brand bass guitar- £450. The chap in the shop told me that it used to belong to Alan Jones from The Shadows, apparently he lived locally and they had a few of his basses on consignment. He had no proof to back this up but I had no reason to disbelieve him as the way I looked and dressed in 1989 would have given no indication at all that I would have been impressed by this fact. Also, I was going to buy it anyway, no need to chuck celebrity provenance into things to make the sale. Still got the bass, its lovely. -
Lost dogs - basses you wish you could buy back... Have you got it now?

I appreciate that its now nine years on from your comment, but it wasn't me that raised this thread from the dead. Anyway, it wasn't this one was it? The only Shafty faker I've ever seen with a Gibbo pickup. -

There was a short period (early 2020's I think but I'd have to check to be sure, it was fairly recently though) that they issued them with unlacquered boards.

Going back to the comments earlier about the new bridge position. Regardless of whether you like the colour of this instrument or not (that's another discussion) here's a good example of how it spoils the look. That gap in the binding is usually hidden by the tailpiece but with the whole assembly moved forward it just makes the guitar look unfinished IMHO.

He's a massive Dinosaur Jr fan too, so he gets maximum respect.

Congratulations. That's great to hear. Stories like yours do give me hope.

Hire a graphic designer for a one off job through one of the many freelance sites.

It does. Even though I don't have his profile or resources, I'll still keep searching.
-
No skunk stripe though, and what is the deal with the TRC? Chickenbacker perhaps?
-
That does, indeed seem to be true, and they were a drop in replacement (see below). However, there should be sets still out there if you are prepared to search long and hard enough.
-
Gives me some hope, that's for sure. Although McCartney has a slightly higher profile than me (and considerably more resources too).

Bridge: Yes, the Allparts replacement will probably lift. If its the same material and construction as a Ric original though, this is a process that takes decades and isn't necessarily a problem. My 1980 4001 (44 years with roundwounds) has the original bridge and it has only lifted a few millimetres and it doesn't affect its function. As for better options the V2 bridge has individually adjustable saddles but keeps the vibe of the original. Pricey though. I don't like how the Hipshot bridge looks. Scratchplate: As mentioned, try Rickysounds Tuners: I believe the Hipshot HB5 is a drop in replacement. Not sure which way it winds though.

Yep, looks like the position has been changed. Check out the neck/body joint and the fact that the scratchplate is much closer to the end of the body on the '23. Apologies for the dust, by the way, haven't had the chance to pick it up much over the past couple of weeks...

So, its been six months since I started the search for my old Ric 4001 (serial number PL7996). Still having no luck, although there have been a couple of near misses- a guitar shop in Germany recently sold PL7986 and the Rick Resource website, who have a member compiled database of over 50,000 instruments, are listing PL7998 as being located somewhere in Tennessee. Both of these were probably from the same production run as mine. I’m not deterred though, but as mentioned in an earlier post I’m now just playing the long game, waiting for some info to appear. There are plenty of examples of missing guitars suddenly appearing again, even after many years. You just have to stay vigilant. If Peter Frampton's Les Paul can turn up 31 years after being lost in a plane crash in a jungle, there's always a chance. Although, for obvious reasons I hope it doesn’t take that long…
-
I thought it looked different, but also thought that it was maybe just the angle of the photo. Now you mention it though, the last fret looks like it doesn't hang over the body, like the earlier models, so you could be right. The 21 fret versions have a similar bridge position too.
-
That bridge looks to be slightly further forward than the standard Ric bridge. Is the V2 bridge smaller?
-
Indeed, very similar. Though yours seems to be darker- is it a Fireglo?
-
As this thread seems to still be fairly healthy after so many years, I'll make a contribution. 1980 4001 with aftermarket black plastics. There has been some debate elsewhere about whether this is Fireglo or Autumnglo. I've always assumed its FG but AG seems to have almost been the same as FG at some points down the years, so it could be possible. There is no hint of brown in it though, and the red is a bit brighter in person than it appears in this pic. Great guitar though, I've owned it since 1989.

Is the spacing not too narrow? A and D seem OK but E and G aren't centred on the pole pieces. Is there any sideways adjustment? I need to replace the bridge on a Squier Jazz and am looking at options at the moment, this bridge being one of them.
