1.
I'd also consider giving nickel roundwounds a go if I were you - roundwound sound but kinder to your fingerboard than steels.
If you want that classic fretless "mwah" sound you need to use roundwounds.
I've got Nickel roundwounds on my Aria Pro 2 SB600 and they feel & sound great. The Rotosound RB45's are pretty cheap, so even if you decide they are not to your liking you haven't lost out too much.

  2. We all arrive in the van and keep a good flow going so there is always someone keeping an eye on the van & someone in the venue.

Some good points have been raised in this thread that are worth remembering.

The only time I had some stuff nicked was from our flat. Our flat mte took us dowm the local pub to celebrate getting aj ob and when we cam back the back door had been kicked in and my bass and my mates guitars and pedal were taken. No luck with the cops. We suspected our flat mate of being in on it as the thieves were some well known local speedfreaks that he knew, but we couldn't prove anything. It took me ages to get another decent bass after that. Of course I was young and didn't have contents insurance.

Another time our Duo set up in a pub, soundchecked and went back home. We came back to the pub and our guitars weren't there. The landlord had secured them behind the bar and told us we were luck no to have had them nicked. When we started our set I noticed our monitors didn't work as some joker had pulled out a cable!

  3. Hi Sam.

    Welcome to the forum.

Get some gigs under your belt and I think then you can take those L plates of and call yoursefl a bass player. Being in a band and playing live is one of the best thing about holding down the bottom end.

  4.
If you're really keen on 'Rays try out the Sterling by Musicman Ray34, they're really amazing for the dosh and I prefer mine to my old US 'Ray. However, pretty good 2nd hand deals can be had on Stingrays too for not too much more cash thatn a new Ray34.
Me and a fellow bass player (we both own a Stingray) tried the Ray 34 at the Mansons guitar show and were really impressed. We could not tell where they saved the money. If you want new try one out. Otherwise find a good 2nd hand deal.

"Re-fitting is the reverse procedure to removal..."

    Yeah, right.
The funniest thing I've read for a while!

I've still to do the 'Re-fitting is the reverse procedure to removal' for my Suzuki bike engine - wish me luck!

  6. Hi There.
After posting questions you should post some photos. What about starting a thread called basses on boats? There's one for basses in gardens going cos of the summer. I assume you don't have much of a garden?

  7. Yet again totally awesome.

You should take a screen shot and put the picture in the thread bass players in hats!

I had to check out the vid for Eugene's Trick Bag. I haven't seen Crossroads for years and was blown away by the dual at the end. Never seen anyone do it. You nailed it.

  8.
The pedals are a fun extra, but by no means necessary. I just programme the drums with the fills in already.

Sorry mep, not criticising, just making it clear that the pedal is for live applications and for a specific way of using the SR16. Didn't want people to think it was necessary to have one.
No Probs silddx. I used the pedal only when I was playing a standard pattern and I wanted a fill. Sometimes you can't always programme the whole song with fills. You can also set the pedal to start & stop the song as well. The choice is his.

  9.
Now it has been mentioned, I've been considering a drum machine for a while now, mainly for practice but also for some recording.

Would the SR16 fit the bill?

I know it's a pretty old design, but it must also be pretty good to still be in production.
The SR16 is great and I have used it for drummerless rehersals before. Make sure you get a pedal so you can insert a fill (just so long the timing is right!)

  10.
The more recent a song is, the less opportunity I find for changing the bassline. Anything by ColdGreenRazorPatrol, just a waste of time trying. But with older stuff we're often doing a cover of a cover anyway, like Johnny Winter's Jumping Jack Flash, or there's 15 live versions, which are all different, so there's more scope.
+1 on this. We do a lot of covers of covers in our band, especially punk covers. Build me up buttercup, Your'e so vain, 99 red ballons, kids in america, footloose & wonderful world are not the original versions. We have done our own version of Mama Mia (3 piece with no keys), although I had to keep to the original bassline to keep the feel and make sure the ladies dance along.

  11. In the January issue of Bass Guitar Magazine there was a vey good article on setting up your bass. It was very well written and very extensive. I photocopy the article and give it to all my students so they will always be able to set up their bass in the future.

  12.
Pretty awful show with pretty rubbish experts and guests. My favourite moments:

Jonathan Ross having no real idea on who Tony Iommi is.

Copeland trying to argue that Sting was the best bassist because he had strong fingers

Mark Ronson arguing that Jimmy Page basically invented hip hop and Hendrix didn't really come up with many memorable riffs.

That it took Vic Reeves to mention that Jeff Beck belongs in the short list of best guitarist kinda sums up the show.

Jonathan Ross almost seemed annoyed that Led Zep won best band rather than Queen or the Beatles.

The show really said more about the presenters and guests rather than the people and bands nominated for any of the 'awards'.
This shows what plank Jonathan Ross is. Tony Iommi was featured and interviewed in the episode on guitarists. Clearly Ross has not watched the series and was drafted in to host the live show in order to fullfill his BBC contractural obligations.

  13. Stick with it. You never know what's round the corner.

Some years ago I went through a dry band spell for longer than I can remember. I seemed to meet the wrong sort of people and bands. One band advertised for another bassist without telling me. I only found out by reading the add in the local paper. I phoned the singer and left a message. She phoned back when I was at work to leave a grovelling appology on my answer phone. Another band I tried to form had issues with the drummer so we found a young talented drummer and got rid of the old one. New drummer never showed up again and always had excuses not to come to rehersals. We found out he treats all bands the same. A pity as the singer / guitarist was excellent and I was really looking forward to gigging with him. Needles to say it all fell apart after that.

2 1/2 years ago I finally managed to join a band of like minded musos. We have gone from strength to strength, and I'm having fun.
