  1. Just bought a fab soft case from @AllanBass which is the perfect size for my PB. (I still need to design and 3D print the base)

The actual pedalboards (Set of effects) are in the Dwarf unit are too many to post; compressor/freq splitter/octave/distortion/amp & cab sim and an upright IR for some songs; also drummer in a box and backing audio (I LOVE the power of the Dwarf).

Hopefully Amazon will be delivering some angled connectors to improve the cable routing.

edit: Arg both cables are the wrong way around ... I will try again!

  2. OMG!

This is probably not a revelation to anyone but it was for me.

A Fifth can be played one string higher and two frets up .... but a -fifth can be played one string lower on the same fret (With a 5er this is very flexible) ... PERFECT for 'A Man of Constant Sorrow' which we are playing at our jam; and it sounds really really nice!

  3. I bought a small RokSak bag from Alan.  Comms were great, delivery lightning fast and it was as new!

Perfect for my pedalboard setup (Now to design/printing the pedalboard).

    Top BCer!

  4. Hi @Greenguitarman

Some terms that might be of use.

Amp: The electronics that amplify the sound.

Cab: Simply a speaker in its housing box.

Combo: Both the above combined in a single unit.

Using an amp+cab (Say a TE Elf + Barefaced One10) gives you the flex to mix and match to suit your taste/budget and change one or the other in the future, but it is not a 'grab that one thing and go' approach. You will need an Amp->Cab cable.

Using a Combo (Like the Markbass 802) means you've just the one unit (And the amp in the combo is generally well matched to the speakers).

For my two cents, I'm a huge fan of Phil Jones Bass (PJB) gear.

They do a range of Combos that sound really nice (Even with my 5 string) and are very compact (PJB do some sort of black magic with 5 inch speakers).  Downsides are that they might not be as loud as other choices and cost more ... but they are quality (Think Apple).

My current rig is a PJB Bass Cub Pro ('BG-120 Ultra Compact').

The Amp portion has a great selection of tone shaping with aux in and DI out.  It pushes 120w RMS into its pair of 5 inch speakers (With, so they say and so I hear great transient attack from improved loudspeaker cone acceleration, great dynamic range, and low harmonic distortion).

It is light at 7.6Kg and very portable.  Perfect for home practice or small gigs (I used it at a recent 7 player jam and it kept up fine at vol of about 40% ... no drummer mind)

For thos 'Rattle Their Teeth' situations, it will allow you to plug in a seperate cab (A PJB C4 in my case) at which point it will push out about 200W RMS.  Of course this setup does require shifting two boxes (And the C4 is about 13Kg) as well as needing a Combo->Cab cable, but it adds the flex of more bass! :)

This is worth checking out, the PJB double four is not so flexible but is fab!

I still can't get my head around this.🤔

Does this mean that no bass players can go along and replace the "house band" bassist to play a couple of songs?

Does this apply to guitarists, drummers, etc.. as well?

The Jam in question is a monthly gathering of ukulele players (It can sound like a swarm of bees at times!) so not as regimented.

Anyone can turn up with their uke (Be it soprano/concert/tenor) and join in ... as there are not many ukulele bass players, I asked 'just to be polite' and was rather shocked at the response!

In the end tho, it led to me finding a very very happy place to groove!

  6. I've seen 'How was your Gig' and 'How was your rehearsal', but could not find one for Jams (Apologies if this was simply due to my poor searching!)

So ... I shall kick things off.

A few weeks ago I posted a 'I play bass, can I come along' ... the response was 'We already have a bass player' 😕 Hmmm ... where in the rules does it suggest that only one bass player is the max!?

Anyhoo, a week or so later I received a message ... "we need a new bass player weekly, might you be interested". Ha ...  I was on it like a rash!

So, last week I went along and whilst being a bit timid, I really enjoyed it.  Feedback was good and the fellow who hosts it even suggested I should turn up the volume ... I like it!!

This evening I went again ... OMG, WHAT a blast!

About 10 of us, playing through a bunch of leadsheets for a couple of hours ... and all really nice folks to boot!

I was not doing anything sophisticated ... root/fifth, with an octave now and then.  Some chromatic approaches, varying the beat from time to ... time, even throwing in some thirds when it seemed appropiate.

really felt in the groove and it will take days for the smile to disappear from my face.

Now I just need to find the magical sequence of plugins on my Dwarf to get a nice upright like sound ... :)

What style(s) of music? Have you got an example chord sheet you can post?

A wide range of cover stuff for jam evenings (I've recently been invited along to a weekly ukulele jam evening as the 'resident' bass player).  On the night folks just pick from a selection of the many dozens of songs in the various books they've produced.

I've just like to throw in some more variety than root/third and looking for some tips to add a bit more colour.

    For example ...

  8. I'd say I'm a 2 (or maybe 3) out of 10 bass player.

I can groove a root + third bassline (With a octave thrown in for good measure) to most anything I can see the chordsheet to.

But I'd like to step up my game and knock socks off lol

    I would love your advice!

  9. Not sure where you are based @NancyJohnson, but a visit to somewhere such as https://www.southernukulelestore.co.uk/ would offer a chance to try more than you can possibly imagine ... I've whiled away many happy hours there!

Something else to consider is to 'google' for a localish ukulele jam evening or check out https://www.gotaukulele.com/p/ukulele-clubs-and-societies.html, they often have 20-30 players who (in my experience) would be very willing to share their experience and let you have a go on their uke.

  11. I've got largish hands also and found that playing a Tenor Uke was more comfortable (Same chord shapes, slightly larger fingerboard spacing) ... I also found that using a low G string (Which is tuned an octave below the standard G) produced a more pleasing sound.

  12. Similar to you @Baloney Balderdash, I've a couple of Ibanez
