The moral of this story is "Dont mess with things that you think you understand but really don't, because it could be expensive and you literaly do get your fingers burnt".

But where is the fun in that!

    LOVING this build!

My background is Unix, started with very early version of stuff on Vax 11/750's and 11/780's. We used to get 1" (?) tape from Bell Labs, I recall a certain Mr Kernighan sending stuff to us on occassion.

My final year thesis was on Lisp and garbage collection and was done on a 64KB (yep 64KB) UNIX box from Motorola with a M68000 processor (might have been a variant as I suspect it had paging built in). Long time ago though,.

The Arduino's are quite simple in some respects, limited memory 256KB, only 16Mhz CPU, lots of bit banging to get keyboards and LCD's working as keyboards and displays are very optional extras. I'm having to recall stuff from a long time ago as I'm writing the code, but working in limited ram space is not too bad, at least once the LCD display is connected I can get something out and be seen, the Arduino IDE has a serial IO system, so I can write debugging back. I can remember writing kernel code and using a single led on a control panel to check things were working and building things up from there.

The other problem I have is that the guitar winder is downstairs as my office desk is full so I can only work on stuff in the evening. It also requires a dedicated Macbook for the IDE.

Glad you have confidence in me. I don;t :)

A real old school IT geek ... me too!  I can remember using punched paper tape to store/upload programs

    LOVE it!

  3. Not sure about this (It seems to have no bass specific stuff like the P1), but with a 30 day return from Thoman I thought it was worth having a go as I love small and light stuff (Ooooo Matron).

Yet to arrive, go DHL go!

I will report the good/bad/ugly when it arrives!

  4. Thanks Rob.

In a recent MOD forum thread about LV2 plugins templating, FalkTX suggested using CMake for it's cross platform support; I've an M1 system as well as a Pi5 and also a Intel Mac Mini and I thought this was a good way to go, but bugger me ... it is a steeper learning curve than LV2 itself!

Undaunted, I'm working my way through it following https://cgold.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

I'm able to make a simple HelloWorld style thing; it's the integration of using external libs, of course LV2 being key, that is giving me pain

Thank you for the VM offer, at present I've more CPU power than I need ... it is brain power/understanding that I need ... but IME the penny will eventually drop! lol

There is another Mooer thread in the effects forum where I wrote this:

Sort of reluctantly, I'm going to return the P2 to Thomann while I can still get a full refund. (side note, I returned it about 2 weeks ago and haven't been refunded yet. This reminds me I need to chase up).

It is a good bit of kit, but is quite expensive at £209 and isn't really better than the Nux Mighty Plug (that I already have) for home practise, and although I only have a simple pedal setup for live use it can't replace pedals like the LS-2 for switching between two basses, or a stompable tuner/mute (unless getting the bluetooth footswich - in which case cost and size starts to creep up and then it seems why not get a cheap multi fx with footswitches), so it would be an addition to my pedalboard rather than replacing it.

It would be good as a pocket sized all-in-one pedalboard to take to band practise, but something like the Zoom B1 Four can do similar and save about £130  (allbeit a bit bigger, needing batteries/power supply, and no bluetooth to stream music).

If I had a lot of spare ££ I'd keep it, but for me it just isn't adding enough to what I already have to justify keeping it.

Hopefully updates give it some Bass Amp/Cabs (although I find Amp sims are basically EQ points and a tone/gain levels of drive - so can be done with EQ and Drive effects blocks, and Cabs can be added as IRs), better tuner reading of a open E, some access to the drum loops/metronome directly on the device, and a low battery warning.

    Thanks @SumOne!

    Tho Bugg3r!

I've just hit the button on a P2 + Pedal from Thomann.

    I've a B1Four & B1XFour ... they are OK, but the P2 is just so small!

Oh well, I'll give it a go and with the Thomann return policy am not too worried if it turns out to be unsuitable.

Well done. More than I managed. Be very interested in your drummer in a box.

Makefiles are simple, this is how we used to build everything in Unix. They have a few small idiosyncrasies and the syntax is a teensy bit awkward, but it's easy to read and trivial to debug stuff (for some value of "easy" and "trivial").

    Rob

Cmake is what I'm trying and it is messing with my head!

Examples on the web are OK for a simple project, but trying to incoporate external libs (such as LV2) is tripping me up big time!

I'm sure it will 'give in' to my efforts, but at present it is like wading through treacle in the wintertime!

BTW the LV2 Drummer in a Box I am calling 'Animal!'

Nice one, that's all the convincing I need! I've just ordered the Prime P2.

    Has it arrived?

    How is it for bass?

How many f/x can you chain in a preset? (I gather it might be limited by the processing power of the unit)

The f/x listed by Mooer seem ... limited in number, does it have distortion/octave/chorus/reverb?

I'm a 'Small is good' lass (Ooooo Matron!)

  8. Neck dive :(

Adding extra weight just to counter it :(

If there was only some design approach to move the weight of the tuning heads from the neck to the body ...

    la la la la la

  9. A friend at work is trying to move on some her late father's things as the house is to be sold; amongst them are a collection of unused boxed tube valves, for example.

I have no idea about tubes, but I figured that some here on BC will.

Are there any 'tube dealers' that folks know of that might be interested in them?

The house bassist if a fabulous player called Ana-Maria Lazar but there’s no hint of hogging the light. She’s happy to play if nobody wants to but would much rather have folks getting up and having a go

What a great attitude ... encouraging new folks to play ... a fab way to spread the joy!

  11. Just bought a fab soft case from @AllanBass which is the perfect size for my PB. (I still need to design and 3D print the base)

The actual pedalboards (Set of effects) are in the Dwarf unit are too many to post; compressor/freq splitter/octave/distortion/amp & cab sim and an upright IR for some songs; also drummer in a box and backing audio (I LOVE the power of the Dwarf).

Hopefully Amazon will be delivering some angled connectors to improve the cable routing.

edit: Arg both cables are the wrong way around ... I will try again!

  12. OMG!

This is probably not a revelation to anyone but it was for me.

A Fifth can be played one string higher and two frets up .... but a -fifth can be played one string lower on the same fret (With a 5er this is very flexible) ... PERFECT for 'A Man of Constant Sorrow' which we are playing at our jam; and it sounds really really nice!

  13. I bought a small RokSak bag from Alan.  Comms were great, delivery lightning fast and it was as new!

Perfect for my pedalboard setup (Now to design/printing the pedalboard).

    Top BCer!

  14. Hi @Greenguitarman

Some terms that might be of use.

Amp: The electronics that amplify the sound.

Cab: Simply a speaker in its housing box.

Combo: Both the above combined in a single unit.

Using an amp+cab (Say a TE Elf + Barefaced One10) gives you the flex to mix and match to suit your taste/budget and change one or the other in the future, but it is not a 'grab that one thing and go' approach. You will need an Amp->Cab cable.

Using a Combo (Like the Markbass 802) means you've just the one unit (And the amp in the combo is generally well matched to the speakers).

For my two cents, I'm a huge fan of Phil Jones Bass (PJB) gear.

They do a range of Combos that sound really nice (Even with my 5 string) and are very compact (PJB do some sort of black magic with 5 inch speakers).  Downsides are that they might not be as loud as other choices and cost more ... but they are quality (Think Apple).

My current rig is a PJB Bass Cub Pro ('BG-120 Ultra Compact').

The Amp portion has a great selection of tone shaping with aux in and DI out.  It pushes 120w RMS into its pair of 5 inch speakers (With, so they say and so I hear great transient attack from improved loudspeaker cone acceleration, great dynamic range, and low harmonic distortion).

It is light at 7.6Kg and very portable.  Perfect for home practice or small gigs (I used it at a recent 7 player jam and it kept up fine at vol of about 40% ... no drummer mind)

For thos 'Rattle Their Teeth' situations, it will allow you to plug in a seperate cab (A PJB C4 in my case) at which point it will push out about 200W RMS.  Of course this setup does require shifting two boxes (And the C4 is about 13Kg) as well as needing a Combo->Cab cable, but it adds the flex of more bass! :)

This is worth checking out, the PJB double four is not so flexible but is fab!
