I'd get this setup then buy red leather sofas to match.

    My setup is close ...

    But no red sofas! lol

In fact it is my gigging setup for small gigs and I hook up a PJB C4 for more oomph when required.

  2. I play short-scale, I've one 4 and two 5s (With BEADG) and prefer the 5s.

The string spacing is a bit narrow on my GRSM25, but I like it as I can stay in one position (usually about the 5th).

Hopefully soon (in the next year or two! lol) I'll build Phoenix, short scale headless 5er with 18mm bridge string spacing and then I'll be in hog heaven!

  3. I've used the Peterson Clip on for a few years with huge success, I love strobe tuners ... but only on acoustics, for my electric bass I just can't get it to work well.

I had a StroboStomp for a while and loved it, but it was destroyed in a fire.

At present I use a Korg Pitchblack mini for my 5ers and am very happy with it; not crazy expensive and so very tiny!

The neck of the GSRM25 is 67mm, not 70, at the 22 fret, Ibanez's own specs: https://www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/gsrm25_02.html

It has a 16.5mm string spacing, so just a question of reducing the string spacing at the bridge, and just doing so by 0.5mm, to 16mm, to gain the additional 2mm missing, easily doable with individual bridge pieces.

To compare the 4 string Hofner Violin Bass only got a string spacing of 14mm at the bridge, so not like narrower string spacing that 16.5mm is completely unheard of and unplayable on a bass, and the 0.5mm reduction required to make it work will hardly do a huge difference in feel.

You're right @Baloney Balderdash, I remeasured with calipers and that is spot on.

But I find the spacing on my GSRM25 too tight, I've tried the TMB35 which has a bridge spacing of 18mm (as does the EHB1005SMS) and I liked it (tho both had other issues that put me off); my GSRM20 has 19mm which I love (but just 4 stings!) ... I much prefer the wider spacing and my aim for a self build is 18-19mm.

  5. Low risk I'd say.  I was kindly gifted a HB B-550FL BK Progressive Series after my fire and it is lovely.  Not light (and sadly I've found 34inch scale length too much for me) but well built, nicely finished, good pups (with active/passive mode) and it is lovely in terms of feel and tone.  Thomann have a great simple return policy (Tho I've always found it near impossible to find a local dropoff point for their free return delivery service).

Sorry @rwillett for a quick hijack.

Sam, what measurements do you need? I've got 3 5er necks I can measure for you, two are strung and one is waiting for me to stop procrastinating and finish the bloody project!

Thanks Si, the hijack continues ... (Sorry Rob)

    30 inch scale length

Nut end needs to allow for this headless string mount whilst allowing access to the truss rod adjustment

On my Ibby GSRM25, fret 22 is 70mm, which I suspect is the narrowest that would work (Which without modelling means the ebay neck is too narrow as it is 65mm with 24 frets :( ).

I wouldn't have a clue about making a neck. To me thats the heart of a guitar and its as difficult as heart surgery. IIf I can control it with a computer, I'm good. Power tools and me are not a good combination. 3d printing is easy, trust me, I know :)

IF I had access to a large enough CNC machine I'd definately have a go at making some necks!

If nothing else works, you can always buy a canoe and have a trip round Brighton pier.

Of course, by the time I resculpted it for the headless mount it would be a poor paddle lol

Thankfully I can run F360, the last time I did such a 'measurement thing' it was with Freecad and the model stopped working :(

  9. The question is how wide is wide enough?

I've been looking at this, which looks like I could loose 98% of the 'paddle' leaving enough space to mount the headless string retainer and is affordable at about £60.

I need to figure out of its 65mm heel will result in sufficient string spacing at the bridge, I'd like 18mm ... I really need to draw up a design to check angles, spacing etc.

And, despite 97.4% +ve seller feedback, I'm a bit wary of a made in china ebay neck ...

  10. Your build has inspired me to look again into following suit, but for me a short scale 5er headless would be my goal ... finding a suitable pre-built neck is proving difficult! Crafting one from wood with frets and truss is beyond my skills and having one made for me (even if just the carcess with me doing the finish) beyond my budget. I've seen some who crafting one from an aluminium t-truss and 3D printed parts, but this approach does not allow for adjustment of relief.
