I still can't get my head around this.🤔

Does this mean that no bass players can go along and replace the "house band" bassist to play a couple of songs?

Does this apply to guitarists, drummers, etc.. as well?

The Jam in question is a monthly gathering of ukulele players (It can sound like a swarm of bees at times!) so not as regimented.

Anyone can turn up with their uke (Be it soprano/concert/tenor) and join in ... as there are not many ukulele bass players, I asked 'just to be polite' and was rather shocked at the response!

In the end tho, it led to me finding a very very happy place to groove!

  2. I've seen 'How was your Gig' and 'How was your rehearsal', but could not find one for Jams (Apologies if this was simply due to my poor searching!)

So ... I shall kick things off.

A few weeks ago I posted a 'I play bass, can I come along' ... the response was 'We already have a bass player' 😕 Hmmm ... where in the rules does it suggest that only one bass player is the max!?

Anyhoo, a week or so later I received a message ... "we need a new bass player weekly, might you be interested". Ha ...  I was on it like a rash!

So, last week I went along and whilst being a bit timid, I really enjoyed it.  Feedback was good and the fellow who hosts it even suggested I should turn up the volume ... I like it!!

This evening I went again ... OMG, WHAT a blast!

About 10 of us, playing through a bunch of leadsheets for a couple of hours ... and all really nice folks to boot!

I was not doing anything sophisticated ... root/fifth, with an octave now and then.  Some chromatic approaches, varying the beat from time to ... time, even throwing in some thirds when it seemed appropiate.

really felt in the groove and it will take days for the smile to disappear from my face.

Now I just need to find the magical sequence of plugins on my Dwarf to get a nice upright like sound ... :)

What style(s) of music? Have you got an example chord sheet you can post?

A wide range of cover stuff for jam evenings (I've recently been invited along to a weekly ukulele jam evening as the 'resident' bass player).  On the night folks just pick from a selection of the many dozens of songs in the various books they've produced.

I've just like to throw in some more variety than root/third and looking for some tips to add a bit more colour.

    For example ...

  4. I'd say I'm a 2 (or maybe 3) out of 10 bass player.

I can groove a root + third bassline (With a octave thrown in for good measure) to most anything I can see the chordsheet to.

But I'd like to step up my game and knock socks off lol

    I would love your advice!

  5. Not sure where you are based @NancyJohnson, but a visit to somewhere such as https://www.southernukulelestore.co.uk/ would offer a chance to try more than you can possibly imagine ... I've whiled away many happy hours there!

Something else to consider is to 'google' for a localish ukulele jam evening or check out https://www.gotaukulele.com/p/ukulele-clubs-and-societies.html, they often have 20-30 players who (in my experience) would be very willing to share their experience and let you have a go on their uke.

Cheap ukes have put many a brave man off and with good reason - they just won't stay in tune!

    I love my Pono 8

Well jel!  I used to have an absolutely lovely KoAloha Opio Tenor (On the left) it sounded fantastic and had amazing projection; also had an original Kala solid body bass ... but ... fire :(

  7. I've got largish hands also and found that playing a Tenor Uke was more comfortable (Same chord shapes, slightly larger fingerboard spacing) ... I also found that using a low G string (Which is tuned an octave below the standard G) produced a more pleasing sound.

  8. Similar to you @Baloney Balderdash, I've a couple of Ibanez

I almost forgot my Kala Exotic Mahogany Electro-acoustic UBASS (It was my very first bass in 2016 but I've not played it for a year or two ... probably should sell it)

Why not wait until you have the strings you need for the swap if you're worried about it?

I want to move the 5 flatwounds to Quinn now (New bass event on Thursday and I want to get the setup done) and I cannot afford to buy a new set at present.

  10. I've a set of string on one bass, I'd like to move over to another (I cannot simply swap them as one is short scale and the other is not).

If I leave a bass for some time (week) without strings is is going to bugg4r the neck? (I know that when I restring it, I'll need to let it settle and set it up again)

Should I tweak the truss rod after doing this to remove the string tension adjustment?

  11. An absolutely lovely instrument in beautiful condition (No scratches/dings on fingerboard, neck or body, a slight chip next to the K&K jack/strap button ... see photo below), fitted with Medium Scale LaBella Black Nylon Tape Wounds (In good condition) and comes with a removable #02 Maple LuteHole Soundhole Cover and a Thomann Acoustic-Bass Jumbo Gigbag.

I've moved on from the acoustic band I was in and so this beauty is getting no attention so she is looking for a new loving home.

    Guild web site:  https://guildguitars.com/g/b-240ef-fretless-natural/

30 3/4” scale length 4-string fretless acoustic bass with two pickup systems.  The original Guild/Fishman Bass Sonitone under saddle pickup has had the under saddle pickup upgraded to a Artec PP 417 unit.  This is an active system, running off a 9v battery (Compartment accessed externally) with vol & tone controls inside the sound hole.  A K&K Pure Bass pickup (pair of transducers) has also been added, this is a passive system with the output jack incorporated into the bottom strap button.  The two systems work in parallel and can be blended if desired.

Audition available in Brighton or Worthing

Collection preferred due to the size, however willing to ship in gigbag if buyer arranges this and covers the cost.

  12. Well, I've only gone and done it!

I've managed to build my very first LV2 plugin :)

    CleanShot2024-01-13at21_24.36@2x.thumb.png.e601b604c362992ad7f2a3079031f428.png

Done on my MacBook M1 running Sonoma 14.2.1

Built as an Apple Universal Image.

Runs a treat (Not that it does much!) in the MOD Desktop App for MacOS (Well worth a butchers if you've any interest in the MOD system https://github.com/moddevices/mod-app/releases/tag/0.0.5 can run on Linux/Win/MacOS).

I endured many of the videos by https://github.com/sjaehn/lv2tutorial#programming-lv2-plugins-from-scratch-i---getting-started

The backing music (And the audio effects) are ... painful, but he is very thorough (Apart from how to build, makefiles were birthed in Hell and are documented by the Illuminati!).

For any interested parties, details of how I did it can be found at https://forum.mod.audio/t/building-lv2-plugins-for-mod-desktop-app/10926/16?u=samiam

I've actually built two, the first in C, the second in C++.  Next to look at is one at a couple of MIDI based examples and then I might jump into building the plugin I really want to build for my Dwarf, a Drummer in a box plugin in the same space as the Beat Buddy.

The big issue with adding send and returns is that latency very rapidly becomes an issue.

Using the 2nd channel as an FX loop doubles the latency, adding portal for reduced CPU practically doubles again to the point it’s pretty noticeable. Any more and I’d say it would be unusable, even given my fairly high tolerance for latency.

I think my GT1000 with both fx loops used still comes in at around 4-6ms, the Dwarf with a single fx loop and portals was hitting around 30+ I think.

Oh my, that IS a huge latency! :(

I'm keen to see how latency is on a Pi5 MOD system, as the Pi5 is a lot more powerful than the Dwarf CPU and the RTL latency reports I can see for the MOTU M4 are v.low.
