1. Any ideas how I'd go about this?
2. how much would you be looking for? any trades?
3. Hey there, I've wanted to change the pickups in my corvette for a while now and the other day the switch fell off my bass and I'm not sure whats happened but the pickups now sound pretty thin and I can't get that bassiness back in. I was wondering if theres a way I can rewire the pickups that are in there for maximum balls and leave the switch (and maybe pull pot) redundant as I never used them anyway! Cheers
4. Thanks for all the tips! Quite like the 2-5 scale one. I've got my first jazz jam tomorrow, I'm hoping once I start jamming with other musicians rather than youtube backing tracks it will help me progress a bit quicker!
5. Cheers I'll give it a go!
6. When I'm playing my walking lines (which at the moment are fairly simple R37R or R35R type things) what is the best way to approach a bar with two chords in it? R - 5 for both? If it helps the tune I'm looking at is Autumn Leaves. Thanks!
7.
What you wanna do first is learn chords first - flash out chord tones in every position in all keys for each chord quality that's involved in your progression. The problem with scales is that if you'd played Bb Maj scale over that progression, after a while it would start sound boring and predictable - that's why you'd rather want to outline each chord individually. And, hey, it can be Rhythm Changes, but you don't need to start off with them at the tempo that Oleo is usually called in (and it's usually really fast).. easy Laimis
I actually moved onto autumn leaves last night, it's a song I'm more familiar with and is at a kinder pace to newbie jazz brains! I went through doing 1357 on each chord, the 1-3, 1-5, 3-5, just trying to get used to the changes. I found a few ii v i changes in that so I watched one of scotts devines lessons and got a ii v i lick out of that so now I've got a bass line with a nice tasty lick that pops up every now and then and then 2 notes a bar for the rest of the tune haha. I felt like I was making some progress though!
8. I'll consider myself told!
9. I'm about to get a neck from rich, I can't comment on quality yet but I can confirm he is a gent!
10. read this about one of cliff burtons basses on wiki before, may be of interest too you - "Rickenbacker 4001 in Burgundy; later modified with Gibson Mudbucker and Seymour Duncan J Humcancelling pickup. Cliff also had a Seymour Duncan stratocaster pick-up installed under the Rickenbacker bridge in place of the foam mute. This bass resides at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
11.
That's a perfectly credible option but you would quickly find yourself playing in little boxes. .. . At the stage you are at, it will be hard to make anything sound convincing.
That's pretty much the problem I'm having! Thanks I'll try some transcribing
12.
The secret is to ensire that your solo lines have their own internal logic and aren't just random notes from the Bb major scale..
Thanks mate, it is starting to make sense but I'm not sure I'd be able to spot this kind of thing for myself. With playing Bb Major over the whole phrase, would that just mean you would have to try and pick the notes from Bb that are chord tones of the chords you are playing over?
13. I was worried about getting a pink bass... so strip right back to the wood and then white nitro? Has anyone got the link to that manchester based shop that sells bass spray cans? I seem to have misplaced the link...
14. By the way I have a Warwick, maple body, wenge/wenge neck and board. Nice bass hehe
15. Thanks for the replies, I have been trying the arpeggios and am starting to make some progress. The reason I ask this though is from looking at lessons like Scott's 'Playing over ii-V-I' lessons but I'm not too sure how to apply them if I'm struggling to spot these sort of progressions. Does this just come from a better understanding of key signatures making it easier to spot these progressions?
16. I've been planning a refin on one of my basses for probably far too long haha. It's red high gloss squire body, I want to finish it white (unless I strip it down and the wood is nice then I'll leave it natural but I haven't got my hopes up). If I do go white, I'd quite like it to wear down fast to give it a nice old battered look, I quite like the thin finishes I've seen on some SG's. I was just wondering how to go about this? I'm also thinking about leaving the red underneath and just taking the gloss off so that starts to show through the white. Has anybody done anything similar to this before?
17. I've never done it so don't take my advice to seriously, but I was trying to find a thread on talkbass to link you to (but I couldn't!) but basically he had a normal bass and recorded a few samples and then using the same electronics gaffa'd onto a plank of wood made a few recordings and asked people to guess which was which. The results came back pretty much 50/50, so based on that I'd say the tone's pretty much 90% electronics so I wouldn't worry about it
18. Hey guys, I'm looking for a bit of help in breaking down chord charts. Identifying common changes like the ii-V-! and parts of the cycle. Take for example the first line of 'I got rhythm' BbM7 Gm7 | Cm7 F7 | BbM7 Gm7 | C7 F7 | I can identify the intervals in-between the chords but I'm just struggling to be able to put them into something a bit more usable. Or maybe find a key centre to play through? Or am I just miles off and should be treating each chord separately? Thanks!
19. thanks! I'll give them a good re-listen tonight
20. Hmmm I'm always interested in cash let me give this a few days to see if I get any interest in a straight trade and then I may get back to you on that!
21. Don't suppose you've got any examples of this sort of stuff?
22. Not off the top of my head sorry mate, check this book out though http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jaco-Extraordinary-Tragic-Life-Pastorius/dp/0879308591 That's what I read it in and its well worth a read anyway.
23. I was doing some reading about Jaco that said it quintuplet runs were one of his little trademarks, I could never really get my head around them though! Wouldn't mind being pointed in the right direction too
