WHy do 6ers almost always have soapbars?
AttitudeCastle replied to ThomBassmonkey's topic in Bass Guitars
I was thinking about this earlier, I'd love a 6 string with a single MM style humbucker (Bongo, or JM2 anybody?) Or two Fat humbuckers (Warwick $$ or Bongo) I guess, soapbars like discussed (and Dood Rightly said!) easy casing design/ convienient and also Soapbars them selves (at least i have always found) to be very versitile pickups, and like all basses can be used how ever, From jazz to pop to metal, Look at Bill Buddah Dickins and other jazz artists (though he has a 7 more often! just the first name to mind) to the bassists from Los Lonely boys and Alien Ant farm to John Myung of Dream Theater and Ryan whatsisname from Mudvyane -
Yeah! a 135 would be exessive!!! OR A 175!! The Drop zones are great strings though!

Heavy gauge Stainless steel Extra long strings?
I use Ernie Ball Power Slinky 5's. I don't know if they do a Power Slinky 6 set but these seemed plenty long enough to me from what i remember. Definately a good string gauge too, i love the .135 Low B Liam
Thanks! They are nickle right? Nice and bright xD Link to the .135?
D'addario do really heavy steels, dunno about the length though. If all else fails, Newtone can custom make them, didn't work out loads more than nce sets of strings, but was coupla years back.
Might go down the Newtone route, i'll drop 'em an e-mail in a mo' -
Hey All, I recently got an Ibanez BTB676 which i am loving The stock elixer strings, not so much, i'm not a fan of coated strings and i find the gauges too thin (not sure what they are couldn't find anything on the net, but the B seems about .120 compared to an old .130 i have lying around) All My other basses past and present use rotosounds, unfortunately (as far as i can tell) They only do a long scale 5 string set not a six string set, The bass has a 35" scale length and while not an issue for the B and C strings, but the A and D, i measured at 42" from the bridge to the post, and the bridge works with a system that is about 1/3" into the body, They B and C strings are about 37/38" from the Bridge i "think" I'll measure it again and correct this if its wrong Thats awkward part one! haha, though i know strings of length exist(?) haha, its just finding them, I also prefer stainless steel strings, the feel and tone, though i like nickle too, so either would be fine, and thirdly I use thicker than most strings at the low end, On my 4 string (Yammi Attitude) i use the Rotosound Sheehan Set, 110 80 65 43, and when i was playing a friends homemade style stix string which was 34" i used 135, 110, 80, 65, 43, 30 So thats : Non coated long, stainless steel/nickel heavy gauge strings! I wouldn't mind at all going heavier on all the strings, its just the B and E i find odd as i find the tension too low, and the strings don't feel thick enough to my touch unlike the 135 i used! (and i've used the Rotosound drop+ set! the .175 was pretty wicked! haha) Any help appreciated! Many Thanks AC
I also love Yamaha. I have an RBXJM1, a Big Blue and a Chainsaw! Truckstop
So Jealous! What i wouldn't do for a JM1 and a JM2 In Tourquise and Plum Pearl respecitvly Thinking of the JM2, i haven't really seen many single middle position humbucker (MM style) basses let along six strings!

Bass Lines That Everyone Recognises
AttitudeCastle replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
The man in my street knows every bassline EVER I "would" say sweet child o' mine as most people i know, know the bass line and recigocnise it in the intro, but thats not so much the case as so many useless guitards and yound/my age guitards in bands wack the bass down and the guitar volume full up! Chic-Everybody dance? Blink 182 Carousel? (all songs which make you go OH yeah i've heard this before, but usually can't name) RHCP All around the world (Seven Nation Army was played on a guitar, not a bass so shouldn't count ) Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc Kiss - Rock and roll all night Just few? Not sure how many of those have been mentioned =/ -
I have the 5 string version and it is awsome. Great value, great sound and I often have people commenting how much the bass punches through the mix. The only slight downside is the neck is a tad wide. My tutor has a 6 string which is just as wide as my 5 string!
Not an issue, love wide necks me! haha
Lovely. I bought a Yamaha RBX550M off eBay a couple of weeks ago. Only cost me £62. Looks like the Yammy bargains are out there
They're Bargins new! I LOVE YAMAHA BASSES Always loved every bass they have made, haha, The only non super bargin new ones are the Attitude and the TRBII ones which are approx. £2500-£3000? Thought the John Pattitucci, is £2000 Played oned at a jazz fest in New Orleans, apart from the super wide neck! with its 20mm string spacing it was fantastic! xD And the Rbx basses are awesome too, the RBX375 doesn't have a floppy B, everyone just uses wimpy strings haha!

Fenders will always be, the orginal, the one which started it off I think thats why they have a certain vibe, I've never ever "hated" a fender, and i've neve "loved" one either, Though, not sure about recently? but certainly in the last 10 years (i feel wierd and old sayin that!) the american standards have been great for the money, some of the signatures i could rant about though! basically i'm indifferent to fender haha

Hey All! Just a quick one, My Ibanez BTB676 JUST arrived, it is a many firsts for me! to be precise, my first: "six string i've owned, first 24 fret i've owned, first 23/24 fret bass i have ever played , first bass with coated strings i have owned, first Natural finish bass i have owned, first Neck through body i've owned, first 35" scale bass i've played, and the first Active bass i've owned" It sounds like an active, if you know what i mean? Nice thump and buckets of low end, I'll add much more when i've played it more, and i'll add pics, probably this weekend? Though up my way there is soo much snow i may have free time in the week xD AC

Anyone ever stuck a bass pickup on a Jazz?
AttitudeCastle replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Bass Guitars
Doesn't Billy Sheehan have a PAF style pickup is that position? I saw him demonstrate it at one of his clinics once - produced some LLLLOOOOOOWWWWWW end!
He has A Dimarzio Model one in the neck position, which is designed as an EB0 replacement pickup REALLY sounds deeeeeeeep when you crank the volume xD -
10 string beast... destroyer of basses.

I'd get to the 6/7 string (from the treble side) when re-stringing then set up camp for the night -
I'm purchasing a Spector soon from a well known south coast shop and from what I can see they keep both in stock so will have to try 'em both out! Funnily enough I've been trailing YouTube for any clips and found this...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MywqeLVu57E
Ah Dave Ellefson what a player xD listening to rust in peace right now actually I rather like his tone in that clip, though its hard to tell how much of the is fromn the cab =/ I would have an LH500 by now if it weren't too heavy for me (even though its tiny! by my standards!) and i have negative money haha!
-
would say the Hartke, If its all about tone, though thats up to your ears, Peavey gear is nuke proof, and the Hartke has a valve you might not want to bother I've never found the Tour 450 amazing tonally, to my ears. Though it was good at shaping the tones my bass was putting out though it took a reasonable amount of twiddling knobs Likewise it took me probably equally as long to get the tone in my head from the Hartke but it was definately more "full on" if you know what i mean? more of the sound i wanted. The Hartke naturally has scooped mids sound, And i like the re-assurance of 18,000 knobs slides and switches, only 12 of which do anything and one of them is on Thats my 2 pennies
Please bear in mind you're dealing with a techno idiot here who took a while to figure out how to put digitsl photos on a post. The thought of recordings etc makes me feel a little strange...
Haha! Aw, ah well, i know the feeling, Well i'll just take your word xD
I bought a Cirrus BXP 5 as my first 5-string (£200). I tried a bunch of the more modestly prices 5's (Yamaha RBX, Peavey, Aria, and Ibanez) and for me the best two were the Peavey and Ibanez, the former just shading it. Awesome sound IMHO
Clips?
That is seriously expensive. Especially when, if what I`ve read is true, Duffs Fenders are "inexpensive Fenders from the 80s". So in other words, they`ve taken a 500 Dollar bass, recreated it, albeit with better parts than the original, and are now selling it for 5000 Dollars. I`m in the wrong business Seriously though, I really wanted one of the Duff basses, but couldn`t get hold of one, so bought a Fender Aerodyne Jazz (which Duff also uses). Quick swap of a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack into the bridge, instant Duff sound. Depends if your son really wants a white bass or not, but the Aerodyne is very cool looking, and both plays and sounds great.
Exept Duffs own Aerodyne Jazzbasses have a custom neck which matches his signatures, or is more P in shape, The Duff is a great great bass, i agree overpriced but i would get the Duff! I've played a Lyte against the Duff (when i was looking for a P/J) and i prefered the DM, don't know much about the Precision Lyte though, i'm sure a few people on her own one or the other or even both!

I'm getting an Ibanez BTB676 for sure now But towards the end of next year(?) (HOPEFULLY as i will be able to work xD) i can get one at a 5 string or a backup (well the 5 would work as a back up!)
I don't believe there is such a thing as a perfect bass. So just look for one that makes you happy when you pick it up. For me that was a Lakland. There's probably a used Lakland skyline in the For Sale section. If you want to save some more, there's also a Sadowsky Metro 5 in the FS section.
There may not be any single "perfect bass" thats certainly true, but there is always one which just feels 'right' in your hands! For me, my 'one' With 4 strings, is the Attitude, never played a 4 string i've liekd teh feel of more, or heard one i've like the tone of more! How ever 5 and 6 strings are a different storey! haha Tried an H/J? (Bridge/neck) Might be worth a try? AC
