1.
First proper gig as a fan? Rush, at the same venue, on their first UK tour. God knows what year it was. 1978/79? Anyone? P
According to http://www.wellers.demon.co.uk/30th.htm it was 1977.
2. I phoned them yesterday (twice) - they gave me a story about "late to printers" etc and had to get them out to shops ahead of subscribers. Should be with us subscribers any day they say ......
3. I posted another question to the seller asking again for the serial number. His response: "As already stated, it has a Mexican prefix but these are usually followed by 5 digits. This however has 6 digits as would an American instrument. So on this particular guitar its not clear cut. The year of manufacture is 93" He's very secretive isn't he.
4. Played a wedding gig last night and they had one of those elf 'n' safety sound monitors on the wall. So as we're playing and rocking through the greens, into the amber and single red, we then back off to avoid the double red and power cut! Managed to stay alive all night, but has anyone any hit double top and been wiped out?
5. This is a corker ..... spelling mistakes abound and have a look at the replies to the questions that have been asked. " I think it about a 92-93 with an American serial number although it starts mn which I think inicates its Mexican" and "Q: Hi, what serial numbers can you give me of the bass, thanks. A: Hi there, Why, may I ask do you want them? Kind regards" Having said that, he gives his full business name / address phone number .... but he's some sort of recycler! Maybe that's the clue!
6.
I am sure half these gigs have been made up to make people sound cool when actually it was The Nolans or Black Lace.
Here's my ticket.
7.
has anyone with a subscription seen their copy yet? Mine didnt turn up.
No I haven't seen mine yet. Funny thing is, I was in the Bass Gallery in Camden on Friday and I'm sure they had the December issue in there (a pile of them), yet if you look on the BGM website today, the latest issue is published as the November one. Worth a phone call tomorrow ......
8.
I remember seeing both Genesis and Fleetwood Mac (separately) at the Sundown around 72/73? My first gig might have been around 1971(?) - Fleetwood Mac, still with Danny Kirwan, at Queen Mary College, Mile End. Can't remember for sure. Guess I must have really been there!
The Sundown was a great venue - one of a few of disused cinemas that had their seats taken out and re-branded as Sundown. I also saw The Who circa 1974 at the Sundown in Edmonton. In (unsuccessfully) trying to find out more about those venues, I came across this eBay ad: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SLADE-:-Original-Tic...91104174002r484 Original ticket price to see Slade - £1 !! Used ticket now sold for £25 !
9. October 5th, 1972 - Hawkwind at the Sundown, Mile End, in London.
10. It also reminds us that Strawberry Fields Forever was made up of two takes in different keys and tempos being spliced together. George Martin speeded up one take and slowed down the other to bring them into a common key. I think the join is about 60 seconds into the song.
11. Thanks to all for your responses. I duly ordered a black scratchplate for my MIM Precison from WD Music yesterday, and it arrived this morning. A near perfect fit - just had to "encourage" a couple of the screws to line up 100%. Excellent service and a good product.
12. Took a chance on ordering a black scratchplate for my Precision from one of the regular eBay dealers, and it was rubbish. Of the 13 screwholes, only one lined up! No problem with getting a refund though. Anyone know any good sources for Precision scratchplates without having to pay Fender prices ?
13.
Cheers - bit annoyed myself because lots of them are out of focus - I didn't put enough attention into taking the pics, I was too busy checking out stuff and planning my Vbass demo thing (left it to literally the last min of course!!)
They really are good pics - what camera / lens were you using? I want one! JJ
14.
- the Highway has a fragile nitro finish which will age fast
I have to admit that I haven't looked at a Highway for a while, but when I was searching for a new Jazz a couple of years ago I couldn't help noticing that several of the Highways, across different shops, had little "dents" in them. The fragile finish doesn't offer much protection. Maybe they've fixed it now? JJ
15.
Are you sure that wasn't the Bass Centre, which was in a basement near Spittalfields/Liverpool St. (and prior to that, down in Wapping) as opposed to the Bass Cellar, which is not in a cellar and is located on Denmark Street. There has been confusion about that in the past. your experience sounds to me like the old Bass Centre, when they were very good - now gone completely I think? Or at least don't have a physical shop anymore.
Yes, The Bass Centre shop has gone. I'd like to think that their lousy customer service had something to do with it too. They always talked a good game, and you could often find a famous face in there, but I made the mistake of paying up front to place an order for my USA Jazz, which was promised for delivery within a week or two. Six weeks later, it finally arrived after I'd caused a fuss. Their response? Two free sets of strings. Also had a problem with my Ashdown amp delivery from them...... Their repair service left a lot to be desired too. Apart from that ......... JJ
16. Generally speaking the original key is your starting point, but then it's whatever suits your singer. Try and work it so that you have a shape which you can move around the fret board with ease. If you're not copying the song note for note, then you're in control and can stick with roots or (for example) roots thru to fifths across just two strings. JJ
17.
let me guess, north london music centre? I started off taking lessons there, but like you gave up when it got to learning reading bass clef. /quote] Nope, a private tutor in Uvedale Road - he was a professional musician playing in cabaret type bands in the 50s and 60s - a real gent!
18. Hello all, I'm 50 now and started playing bass ten years ago when I was taking my son to guitar lessons. I'd never played a musical instrument before, and his teacher taught guitar, bass, and drums. I needed something to challenge me in middle age so bass seemed the easiest and quietest option! It was a terrific introduction as he taught me to read bass clef but I soon got lazy and moved to tab - I wish I'd stuck it out! I play with a couple of covers bands in and around Enfield / Hertfordshire, doing the usual standards with some Coldplay, Travis, Killers and similar thrown in. I mainly use my Jazz but have a P-Bass as a backup, going through an Ashdown C410T-300 combi. Looking forward to taking part in the forums! JJ
