Genelec 8020As

The one's on eBay are currently at £390 with 11 hours to go. Sod that, they're only £500 new. With delivery costs and the fact that they're two years old why would you pay that for what really is an unknown entity. Defies logic to me. I'm obviously out of my league here, Tannoy Reveal A5s at £250 from new are making more sense to me at the moment.

Genelec 8020As
They are totally excellent monitors, amazing stereo image and transparent. In a small room you can't mix with an extended bottom end anyway (oo-er, etc). Go for it.
Good point. I don't think I'll need much convincing here.

Genelec 8020As

There lies the problem. I can't afford new so i'm on watching a pair on ebay. No try before you buy though. The rooms tiny, 11x8. Full of rockwool so acoustically quite good

Genelec 8020As

I'm considering upgrading to a set of Genelec 8020As active studio monitors. Anyone got 'em or got opinions on 'em? I've got a small space so they fit the bill but can speakers that size offer good bass response?
If all your walls and ceilings are completely covered then yeah that would suck the high frequencies but even then that would be fairly easily remedied by adding some reflective material to some of the traps - though not at any mirror points! (cardboard or paper over the bass trap but under the material is one old trick for ensuring highs arenmt sucked out). You could be mroe creative than that though by adding a couple of homemade polydiffusors or even simply pinning some old cd-r's to some of the trapping (makes for quite a cool effect and gives provides for some reflective surface for those highs to bounce around.) Seriously though, I doubt you are close to that point yet. I'll dig out some of the photos from my old control room so you can see how much of that stuff you can put in a room before it becomes a problem. Glad you've found it useful Trev
Yeh, some photos would be good. I'll get some photos up of my own as soon as I'm done. I think it will be easier to show you than try and explain the room set up. As it stands I think there's no problem Suppose the biggest mistake I made was thinking I could control the air flow and humidity by opening doors when needed and using a dehumidifier. On reflection, daft money-saving idea. I'll have to fit an extractor/air flow fan at some point.
7. bump - Will also consider trade for some descent active studio monitors. price comparable
It's really almost impossible to overdo it. If it sounds better, it is better.
I read too much can affect the higher frequencies? By the way pretty much everything I've learnt has come from your postings, links etc. I've made some mistakes but I've got quite a few things right thanks to you, cheers.
Yer..lets see some pics.... Always good to see how others go about it. When it's finished in a couple of weeks I'll post some piccys. Update - I've fitted 7 4x2 (absorbsion) rockwool panels and 2 5x2. The 5x2s are diagnal across the corners, sitting on the desk. 2 of the 4x2s are on the ceiling. I've fitted the others where I thought was the best spots, reflection points etc. I've got two more to fit. one of those diagonally floor to ceiling in one of the remaining corners. For a small room it now sounds tons better, and I mean tons. I did use some acoustic foam (corner bass traps) between the ceiling and the walls (above the absorbsion panels) but not on the corners where I've taken the absorbsion panels to the ceiling. I've got a quilt in front of the door but it's messy and p*****g me off. I'm going to put a nice heavy curtain there. If there's any interest I'll take pictures Question is: have I overdone it for a small room. From my recordings I'd say not but I sometimes question my ability to hear the little naunces.
10. OK I'm taking a price drop plunge on this to £200. One of the the phono outs isn't responding but this does come with a digital out lead and other goodies mentioned. Buyer can see it up and running in my studio if they can collect.
11. I leave my bass and guitar in padded gig bags my studio, which is a converted garage. So PC, synth, mixer, amps, speakers etc also in there. It's well insulated but can go down to 0 deg if it's -5 outside. No probs to date. I have a hygrometer in there and constantly keep an eye on the humidity which I stabilise with a de-humdifier after any life form has been in the room for a period of time. I also have two large open tins of rock salt as a contingency When I go in the room I obviously turn the heater on especially in the kind of temperature we're currently having. I don't often get my guitars out straight waay. Too obsessed with creating trance/dance looped stuff at the moment. So with the forementioned precautions I feel my gear is safe. And yes it is alarmed.
12. cheapest at the moment is £270 second hand. The new buy it nows are no cheaper than the retailers. £450
13. Basschat does it again! Anonymity - A thing of the past
14.
I second that. This is a really cool bit of kit. Produces ace recordings and is pretty straighforward to operate too. The DVD is a must have as well. Come on, someone should buy this. Is a bloomin bargain! Good luck bro Andy
Cheers Pal
15. Thankyou for the free bump Mr Pirate! t I'm currently using the internal effects for my Cubase recording. Connected digitally to my interface then Firewired to the PC

thanks for all your suggestions, they're all appreciated. I won't be doing that much vocal, acoustic recording so here's my thoughts from the suggestions. Rockwool in the corners to act as bass traps. I've seen the pictures thanks to Rimskidog. Material over the rockwool for aesthetics. I think this would help sound quality whilst mixing. A couple of hooks on the ceiling in one corner of the room to hang a quilt on and use a reflection filter for vocals and acoustic. Stating the obvious here but the quilt would only be in place for the recording. If there were still issues I would look at a stage 2. any materials in stage 1 could still be used so i'm not wasting any money. Does that sound logical?
17. Do you think the positive feedback he left you was a smokescreen as otherwise I can't understand why he would leave such positive comments if he's just a common tea leaf. I personally would leave out any derogatory comments on forums etc as it will make matters worse. My thoughts are this will sort itself out as they have done before with the help of this forum. Peer pressure seems to be more effective than the old bill these days
18. Not the voice of an expert but here goes: Are you planning to record all 7 pieces at the same time or individually. You may want to put it all though a mixer before it goes to the interface. That way you don't need an interface with loads of in and outs. Could also work out a lot cheaper As far as software is concerned I recently brought Cubase Essential 4. I got the educational version for £68, (Dolphin Music). Comes high in my recommendation.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I have looked at the Advanced Acoustics website and if I don't find a cheaper option I probably will go down that route. I want to record miked vocals, bongo's and acoustic guitar so I think I'm right in saying that I'll need a dead sound. Is the advanced acoustic stuff particularly special or will ordinary foam do a similar job? I'm talking something permanent here not quilts and stuff. As you can tell, I'm being a bit of a tight a**e here but the cost of everything else for the studio has left me a bit skint! Thanks again
20. I've recently converted half of my garage into a small studio. A reasonable amount of space and fairly well soundproofed. I'm now looking at acoustic treatment as it does sound hollow and sound is bouncing all over the place. Does anyone have any advice on descent, reasonably priced acoustic kits or any hints/tips in general on developing good acoustics on a budget.
21. I have a BR900CD which I brought from new from Sounds Great in Stockport 2 years ago. It's never left the house since. Please see link for further info: Still have receipt. Paid £369, which was discounted due to incorrect pricing on the net. Now retailing at approx £430 upwards for V2. Will sell at £200. No bartering please. Collection preferable but will deliver at an additional cost. http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/BR-900CD/index.html This also comes with an additional operaters CD which was a further £20 and a 1gb Compact Flash, cost approx £15 and a digital out lead at £10 . I have a full set of instructions but I didn't keep the box.
