1.
Do you not have PA support?

    J
Didn't this weekend - vocals only .

Not a problem with the pubs mind , and most rally do's are big PA - full support .

It's just those noisy bastard guitarists and a drummer with a seriously loud kit .

I'm just of the mind , of a 2U power amp as an extra , that can be hooked up on the couple occasions when it might be needed .

I'm not a power freak - just trying to obtain a bit of headroom .

  2. Not sure if this has already been done .

I'm after power amp suggestions . This weekend , my trusty Eden WT400 was struggling on a marquee gig volume wise .
Both clips were on , too much for my liking . More headroom is what I think I need . As these gigs for me are more upcoming .

I don't fancy another head if I can help it , so a power amp seems the likely route , as I like to Eden sound .

Any ideas guys and galls on a stomping amp .

I was thinking of Crown K2 bridged - that sort of thing .

Anyone on here run a power amp aswell as an amp for the big gigs - and what do you use and why ?

  3. Years ago , I did a holiday camp gig with the band and we were booked to support Brian Poole (Tremoloes fame) and his band Electrix , I believe .

Us on first for the kiddies stuff - hokey cokey , all the Black Lace numbers etc .
    Then Brian Poole
Then us to finish - with our stomping rock

After out first set , I went backstage , to be greeted by Brian Poole trying to squeeze himself into a girdle :) - Rock'n'Roll

    I've never forgotton it
Oh and he never spoke (arogant twat) , but the band were great - really up for a laugh .

  4.
In all fairness,Nathan East has been endorsing Yamaha basses since
    about '81
I realise this , it's just the other stuff .

The EUB's have been - Clevinger , then NS , now Yamaha .
The amps have been - Eden , now Aggie .
    DI's , and pedals - can't remember names , but I remember a fair few .
    Strings - Elites , now Dunlop .

Rocca Prestia's going the same way - SWR to Eden to TC - all in a few years .

The point I'm making is that , it sort of makes me laugh that they think we're buying into it .

Though some obviously do - but they still seem to sound the same .

  5.
Re Zender Warwick.

It wasn`t so long ago he thought the sun shined out of his Gibson les paul bass.

And yes, it is overpriced and damm ugly, imo. :)

    Jez
If he's not careful , he's going to end up like Nathan East .

I've lost count of the amount of basses , EUB's , strings , DI's , effects , that blokes endorses . I wonder how he plays them all

  6.
Just had the post delivered, which in itself is amazing, and the latest BGM flopped onto the doormat. Oh dear :) . Richard Bona again, Chris Wolstenholme again, 4 x £1k(ish) upwards basses, one sub £300 (where's the middle ground?). Don't get me wrong I'm sure that Bona and Wolstenholme have their fans, but these guys seem to be on a permanent rota, surely there are enough other "name" players out there warranting some mag space. To be fair there is also an interview with Mark Bedford (hurrah!) and Horace Panter. Editing howler was in the Ed's letter no less referring to the London Jazz Festival details being on page 14, uh uh, page 12 as listed on the contents page. Some new guy attending the institute, so we start with another 12 months of the same "this month I have been mostly....." which we have seen a good few times before, enough already. Still my favourite bass mag and I will keep getting it on subscription, but after the few months of improvement this seems like a small backwards step for me at least, YMMV.
It is improving , seemingly month by month . Especially when you look at some of the early editions . I'm picking mine up tomorrow .

As an aside , I had a look at the latest Bass Player in Smiths (Wolstenholme on the cover) , and there seemed nothing in it .
I used to buy this one all the time , but looking at it now - not worth it .
I ended up buying Guitar and Bass Magazine - always loads of stuff inside of interest - not just bass .

BGM is getting better , you've got to admit it

  7.
Funy that - if I want to listen to virtuosic bass I listen to some Meshel or Bob Marley .

With the sole exception of Michael Manring, who I dont actually think is playin bass, he is composing music on a four stringed instrement that fully deserves the Hyper tag. He still surprises, amazes and delights me with his compositions. And he really isnt w**k*** IMO.

As for Vic, Alain, Marcus etc heard all they do ages ago
I've got a Manring album - Unusal Weather , I think it's called . Its great .

I agree with the others about bass albums though .

I got the Jaco debut album years ago , cause "I thought I should have it " , and after the first listen ,it went with all the other bass albums .
I prefer his Joni Mitchell stuff to his more solo outings .

I bought a Marcus Miller in concert DVD and it's dreadful . Great playing - no doubt about it , but I just can't stand the tuneless tunes .

I thought it was me , but I'm glad I'm in esteemed company .

  8. You'd wonder why no-one yet has (to my knowledge) , produced one just for slap .
By that I mean a dedicated pedal , with a graphic plus either compressor or limiter .
One pedal , one board space , job done .

  9. I'm suprised that no-one has mentioned the Clone Theory yet (the original one) .
I'm no chorus expert , but having had a few over the years , this has been the best .
Only problem is , it's quite big in size by today's standards .

  10. Years ago when I was about 19 or 20 , I was playing with a Pub / Function band , and we had a sort of local gig at a town pub

In the break , some bad blood between the keyboard player's wife and another local couple , spilled out , and the boyfriend of the other woman ended up on the back carpark floor , with our drummer looking over him , having just smacked him .

I thought this would be the end of it - but no .

As we were packing up , the aformentioned couple were outside the pub shouting all sorts , and this attracted all the local yobs at kicking out time .

I was in the back of the van loading up with the guitarist , when I heard him shout "look out Paul , here they come !!"

I looked over the baulkhead , to see a small mob , rocking on the archway gate , which came crashing down .

The guitarist ran into the pub , and I just sort of froze , I couldn't get my head around what was happening

The van back doors were opened by some of the mob , saw me , swiftly closed them-locking me in , and proceeded to rock the van like f**k , trying to tip it over . All the time I could hear shouts and screams from the pub , over the din of the van trying to be turned over .

When the doors were opened and I was 'rescued' , I went into the pub to find the guitarist nursing a broken little finger , his wife with a head cut from a cymbol being chucked at her , and the drummer sitting down - he apparently clobbered most of them as they piled in one by one through the door .

Oh and by the way , the keyboard player and his wife had run into the kitchens and hid together until it all calmed down .

The Rozzers turned up much later , as per normal , and I saw the Landlord hand over a wad of notes to one of them behind the bar , under the counter , and off they went . Turned out that his licence was coming up for renewel , and I can only presume that this was some sort of hush money .

After all these years , I still feel somewhat guilty for being stuck in the van , although I was locked in , but not being a big scrapper , and only little more than a kid at the time , I wonder what real use I would have been .

    Ahhh memories :)

  11. Earlier in the day , I'm normally out with the wife and kids . Then near 4pm , I start to mention that I need to get back for the gig . She cops the hump and says that all I think about is bass (your point?) .
Then a massive rush , when she insists on making me a "quick tea" that takes me right up to the wire time wise . Love her really .

  12. Stones - 'Love you Live' . Double album . The Canadian club side sounds raw and you can almost feel the energy . The other 3 sides from a Paris stadium (I think) , err a bit more ropey . Though to be fair , this is how they sounded live around that time - ramshackle .
I've got a Nine Below Zero album that I'd say is live .
And as for The Eagles , I once saw a live concert on video (quite recent one-no more than 10yrs old) , and Joe Walsh took a solo , half way through , the close up on the neck bore scant regard to what I was hearing .

  13.
We've played L.A. ... That's Long Ashton, near Bristol :)
Yeah , I've played in California - that's California Sands near Yarmouth .
I've also played in the West End - that's the West End pub in Feltwell Norfolk (was renamed later as The Bell , and soon became known as both names - The Bell End)

  14.
I keep messing up Hysteria's verse when i play it with the band.

Can do it fine on my own, soon as the guitar plays i start missing notes everywhere.
Happens to me sometimes on that song - soon as the rest start , I sometimes don't feel that comfortable . Also with Muse - Knights of Cydonia . Piss easy - just root notes , but I just can't get the form into my head . Even after a few years , I still have a crib sheet on the floor . Now tell why that is ? :)

  16.
I guess mine is probably the Status Quo version of "Safety Dance". Closely followed by Girls Aloud's "Walk This Way".

    What's yours?

    :)
The band I play in , doesn't play cheese , apart from maybe 'Turning Japanese' , or 'Crazy Horses' if the mood suits at the end . But , I used to do a lot of function band work , and the list is endless - 'Four strong wins' by Gallager & Lyle , 'Birdies song'-truely dreadful Holiday camp memories , 'Through the Barracades by Spandeau , '3 times a lady / Hello both Lionel Richie , I mean I could go on but I feel a depression coming on .

  17.
Still sound OK . I thought that there was some distortion but that soon went - probably "thinking it as I thought that damage had been done" and no problems now with the sound . I don't seem to question , but the small light show on all 4 speakers seems a bit much for it to have come from a tweeter bulb , but tell me I'm wrong . And yeah , trippy it seemed , until I realised that although I don't now gig with this cab , it still cost me 1K new and the price of new speakers would be more than the now 2nd hand price . The trip then abruptly stopped :)
Cheers for the replies guys

  18.
I awlays pay a visit to DS whenever I'm in London, just to see what's one the go. Some of the prices, esp in V&R, are a bit steep, in my books. Was in there last month whilst visiting a mate in London and spotted a lovely 66(?) Jazz in CAR. Some Spanish guy was playing it and it sounded hot! Him and his missus were going on about it (they looked like they had coin). On the way out I asked how much; '£7k' came the reply. Woooo.........

And then on to Andys, where I saw a lovely Danelectro baritone guitar, large bodied, vintage finish. For the first time in my life I felt a purchase at DS coming to fruition but at £800? No thanks.

MG are bad enough but their pals up north are the most condescending lot ever! Didn't they somehow get ahold of Chris Squire's old 21-fret 4001 a few years back?
MG , yeah , didn't they screw up with that golden Hofner that was supposed to be Macca's old bass , but turned out to have been owned by some other bloke . I remember the articals where they said that they'd bought it for a knock down price (probably told the guy that it was a worthless lefty , or something of the like) and that they'd been offered some ridiculus amount , but - "we think it's worth alot more " . How these idiots have remained in business is totally beyond me , it really is .

  19.
I bet that was trippy.
Light bulb, like the others say.
Do they still sound ok BTW?
20. Last night on a rehearsal , I had a G5 plugged in line (not in FX loop) into an Eden head and speaker . Whilst noodling , I played an open string and went through the G5 settings , changing parameters as I went , to see if I could find new sounds . Suddenly I noticed that on a particularly high pitched "squeally" setting , the speakers developed an orange glow near the outer edge , pulsing in time with the squeal :) . I showed this to the others to show them and no-one had seen anything like this . Has anyone had this happen ? Have I shagged my speakers or amp . Any ideas .

  21. I came back from Butlins Skegness last week and I can report that the sound on EVERY live show was absolutely crap/sh*te/awful - pick whatever you want . Honestly , even the missus who's tone deaf said "is it suppose to sound like that?" . Err no . There were a couple of bands , the best being some reading guys backing some Britains Got Talent acts . The bass player in particular had a nice Parker Fly bass , although you'd have never known it from the sound . Only bass drum seemed to be loud but not clear , just droning and horrible . The vocals came through in some form , but it was truely dreadful . Even the X Factor acts , including Ruth Lorenzo sounded crap - the backing track mixes were just as bad . Now I've had some good and bad experiences with sound men over the years , but surely Butlins is not some poxy village festival , social club or large pub etc . It's supposed to be on the money , I'd have thought . I've played plenty of holiday camps over the years and always got a decent sound , and if we'd have sounded like that , then word would have spread . Who on earth sorts the sound out at these venues .

Who's that greedy so and so with 3 . Is it the good Doc ? :) Honestly that photo has some lovely specimans . Did that come out right ? I meant the basses - you do know that , don't you ?

  23.
Just playing with my new camera... got a quick snap here, it's a bit blurry actually but will get some better ones tomorrow. Just wanted to ask though, on my monitor the picture is very clear and sharp, but having posted a black and white pic on here before some said it was very dark on their monitors. Over at Flickr I have looked at the pics in the black&white section and they all seem about the same levels as mine.. so how does it look to you?

    Cheers

I've been on the look out for a passion like this for years - either missed out or no money at the time . Always wanted a white one , and non of that 90/10 malarkey - it's graphite only for me on everything now . I know that you'd probably never sell , but I'm going to be cheeky and ask . :)
