2.
Watch out for Escrow as well. A friend of mine looked into this. I can't remember the details, but the terms horrified me at the time.
I've already decided that refund or no, I'm parting with nothing until the guitar is back in my hands so I know it's what I sent and can then have it checked myself. I know this will likely be a major issue what with him being in Argentina.
 3.
Have you got pictures of the guitar in question, plus can you provide what he suggests what makes it a fake? Even fakes usually have serial numbers, so it's no evidence one way or the other.
. . . One thing that's certainly helping my confidence that I have done the right thing is a guy I showed the guitar to prior to the sale - he being an expert of sorts in used guitars and he never questioned its authenticity. He would have smelled a rat in an instant from my experience with him. I don't want to tell the buyer to simply go and f*** himself, but I do want to make sure I am as informed as I can be before I challenge the veracity of his claims.
 4.
What were the other reasons he gave that makes him suspect it's a fake?
Here's the body of his email exactly as I received it.
1 The serial number print is not from the Gibson company, and the serial number its not real. 2 The neck is not a Gibson 3 The body of the guitar is not made of caoba as it should be on a Gibson standard. 4 The humbuckers are not Gibson or even made in USA. It seems to have been to be P90 but seems to be removed. 5 The neck frets are not the original from a Gibson standard. 6 The standard inscription on the head of the neck is not Gibson original – it is a fake copy 7 The shape and the cavities on the body are not shaped with the Gibson standards. 8 The mic cables are not Gibson originals and have a job to seem to be Gibson standards. 9 The selector switch is not original (it’s the same one used for ephiphone) and apart from that its not working. 10 The bridge is not original, and the origin has been awfully removed. 11 The neck shape its not Gibson standard plus the whole neck has been pasted to the body. 12 The GIBSON script is a complete fake, not original. 13 The tensor neck head is not original, it’s not even on the guitar 14 The mark on the 7th fret has been added trying to imitate a Gibson. 15 The capacitors are not originals. 16 The potenciometers are not Gibson. 17 The tap of the body is not proper in size and it is not the original maple from Gibson - even the unions are not proper. The shape is not smooth as a Gibson original should be. 18 The sound of the guitar plugged its awful and completely noisy. The circuits are all fake and not proper. 19 The circuits cover is not original, it’s not even the same material as Gibson. 20 The humbuckers have been scratched to seem old, but they are not from the year when you told me the guitar was made.
I already know part of this are complete and utter bullshit.
 5.
I'm of the mind that refunding the money will result in loss of the money and the guitar as the buyer has moved to t'other side of the world and it's unlikely that you'll be able to track him down. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it does sound like a scam in the making...
Hi again - doesn't sound harsh at all, I've been scammed before and I'm not about to be suckered again if I can help it. Any and all advice that will make sure I don't get done on most welcome! Cheers!
 6. How pleasing to see the great man with a proper bass, too.
 7.
According to an online checker, that serial number indicates that it belongs to a guitar made at the Kalamazoo Plant on March 5th, 1985.
Aye, thanks for that - I just found that info at guitar dater. I'm thinking the guy has received bad advice or is trying to scam me. Not least because I bought, played and enjoyed the guitar myself with no suspicions at all. I'm no expert, but have been playing since the 70's and had no concerns at all about the authenticity of the guitar.
 8. Hi Guys, I'll cut a long story short here - in December last year I sold what I believed to be a genuine Gibson Les Paul. The buyer has now come back to me and is claiming the serial is a fake. Before I refund his money and take back possession of the guitar I'd like to check as best I can that he is at least, in turn, being honest with me. The serial number in question is as follow: 80645481 Is there anyway to learn conclusively if this is indeed the genuine article or a fake as he claims? In the email I received, he goes on to list a number issues with the guitar suggesting that the serial number is far being the only thing fake about it. Any information about the number and other things to watch for would be very helpful indeed. Not least because I sent the guitar to the guy in London and he has now returned to Argentina - I'm assuming he would like me to refund his money to a bank in Argentina and then he will ship the guitar to me. Should I use an escrow service? Jings - my head is done in! Many thanks - Andy.
 9.
Your useless you! Good luck man
Fussy bassa I know Everything about this is right - tone, feel, weight, looks, playability. Except the notable absence of white and I confess to a white bass fetish
 10. Three tone sunburst Fender USA body + Fender Japan '75 reissue neck featuring rosewood fretboard with blocks and binding. Awesome Bill Lawrence noiseless J-45 model pups, through-body stringing, bridge with adjustable width saddles, 4 bolt neck joint, tort guard and added series/parallel switch. In very good condition overall, electric's are ace, body has a few dings which I'll illustrate in the pics to follow. It's feckin awesome to be honest and I love it. I'd love it even more if it was white. So, I don't want to sell, but I would like to trade for a similar quality Fender Jazz bass provided the bass in question is WHITE. And I don't mind cash either way if it will smooth a trade. But - big but - I'm not interested in a white bass with a rosewood board unless that also has the block inlays. So, no dotted rosewood boards. Dotted maple boards are most welcome. Neither do I mind if it's a an MIM, MIJ, CIJ, MIA or combo as this one is. Worth repeating that I am very happy with this bass, but I'd just be even happier if it was white.
 11.
Except the Ed Friedland one, it is highly recommended to teach you that most important approach to the slap technique and also how to apply it in the real world, in any music contest.
Ok - with a recommendation that hearty I went ahead and bought it. I'm looking forward to it!
 12.
Before you spend TOO much on DVDs, have you explored http://playbassnow.com/ If you can already do everything on that website, then you probably don't need much tuition!
And with that all plans for DVD's are temporarily suspended. Superb!
 13.
For that you don't need a dvd, here is a long PDF link that does it all: http://www.jerzydrozdbasses.com/akcndfr54j...uide_ver100.pdf
Thank you very much indeed! Absolutely perfect. Might be a good idea to buy myself a cheapo bass to get to grips with this.
 14.
I think that the thing to remember about instructional videos is to take them as entertainment and not as a lesson substitute. Sure, you may get the odd lick or idea, but the majority won't really help you in any significant way. I've got loads of them, and they are more about watching someone play than actually learning anything.
I find that if I come across a technique that inspires me - or at least helps - I'll stick with learning it and so improvement overall is attained. For example, my fingering technique is an adaptation from a Jaco Pastorius DVD. And although it was a complete bastard unlearning years of bad habits, I'm obsessive enough to stick with it if I understand the likely long term benefits. My recent keenness to move forward again has been because I have a bass I really enjoy playing again and, also on the Pastorius DVD, accepting advice against the dangers of just learning licks rather than improving all aspects of playing and understanding. But, whilst doing that, I'm also keen to find playing entertaining for myself and I love slapping, tapping and the like.
 15.
This one is excellent http://movie-bay.co.uk/for-sale-post/Slap-...uide_26846.html
Cheers - excellent price at that. I tried to buy it but PayPal reported a problem with their paypal account so Amazon to the rescue. Thanks! Any others - especially one to help me learn about setups/maintenance?
 16.
you could get the Flea DVD. They are so oot their nut hahahahaha
Had that and sold it - next to useless. I love his playing, but that DVD was a snoozefest jamw***. Anyone know if the Wimbish one is any good?
 17. Hi folks - I just bought myself Stu Hamm's 'slap, pop & tap' DVD and despite his cheesiness, there's stuff I have learnt and more to glean from it. Any other suggestions of tip-top DVD's worthy of investment? I'd also really like a DVD to learn how to properly set-up a bass and/or a guitar. Cheers!

 22. And a close up of the body (reprise) which should illustrate the repair job Lewyyy had done on the wee chip by the bridge.
 23. Here's a pic of this very bass as it was when Lewyyy took it off my hands.
 24. The lightest one I recall playing was a Fender Aerodyne. It was very light. Whilst it looked great. it also sounded pretty poor, but perhaps a pup/pre-amp change could work wonders for it. FWIW, I'm now on the hunt for an Italia Rimini deluxe which I just tried as I also need a light bass - it was perfect and sounded great!
