Short scale half / ground / pressurewound strings
Schlippy replied to Schlippy's topic in Accessories and Misc
They look absolutely perfect, cheers chief, in stock in the UK to boot. How have you found them over time, a couple of the comments remark that they settle in to a "mellow" flat sound, do they maintain much of their initial brightness once they're worn in? -
Looking for a set of short scale strings with the feel and low string noise of flats while retaining the high end articulation of rounds, if such a thing exists any more. Used to have a set of D'Addario SS XL Half Rounds which were absolutely bang on the money, but it doesn't look like they make them any more sad face emoji. Heard good things about GHS pressurewounds too, but can only find a single light gauge set listed anywhere and no-one has any in stock, boo hoo. Anybody know if these are still a thing? Super annoying that they've got like half a dozen names for the same thing too, doesn't make tracking them down any easier.

2 pickguards for a Fender Player series MIM P/J Mustang, one tortoiseshell, one black pearl. The tortoiseshell one came fitted on the bass when I bought it, got the black pearl as a replacement but it has a glittery, 3D-type effect that I wasn't keen on. The black pearl was only fitted for a week or so, both are in excellent condition. Don't have a picture of the tortoiseshell one fitted but here's the catalogue image for reference: ..and the black pearl (more of a dark grey IMO): 15 notes each including postage, or both for 25.

Bought a drum machine off Steve, very easy, hassle free transaction. Great comms, was posted first class the day after payment, turned up packaged well and the item itself was in mint condition. Steve also managed the license transfer for the associated software quickly and without issue. Two thumbs up.

Analogue / digital signal chain conflict
Schlippy replied to Schlippy's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just tried it with a chain of bass -> suspect analogue pedal -> digital pedal -> amp, and with the bass volume fully down the noise issue is still there. Also noticed that from cold (i.e. the power to the pedal chain just turned on) the signal initially "bleeds" up to full volume like this, so it sounds like there's definitely something funky going on with the analogue pedal. Unsure what to tell a repair shop tho, other than giving them all this info. -
True dat, and 2 for 1 at the minute, hmm...

Analogue / digital signal chain conflict
Schlippy replied to Schlippy's topic in Repairs and Technical
I isolated the power supply to both digital pedals when they were playing up as a first test (most of the rest of the chain were sharing a 5-way adapter, but the pedal under test had it's own 9v adapter going straight into the wall) and the problems persisted then. -
Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask this. I've got an analogue overdrive pedal with multiple outputs that I basically use as a splitter, only occasionally engaging the drives themselves. I've noticed a couple of my digital pedals really don't like being downstream of it, they start kicking out weird oscillating effects or feedback-y howling / rushing noises (thought the digital pedals were on the blink initially, but they're fine in isolation and the problems only occur when chained after the OD). Is that a sign of something dying / going wrong inside the overdrive, or is just bad luck and some pedals don't play nicely together? I've been meaning to get a dedicated splitter anyway but could do without the extra expense at the minute (or a bench fee for opening up the overdrive if there's nowt wrong with it).

Yeah, I tend to use my right forearm to hold the bass at the angle I want rather than relying on the strap, I move about a lot and adjust the angle and position all the time. And obvs with an SG that thing wants to divebomb like a kamikaze pilot. Ooh, that looks good, shame about the plastic extender (I love how the two piece ladder designs don't "sag" over time) but probly the best I've seen so far. Memory foam FTW, it's soooooo comfortable.
-
That looks great, but are both sides suede or is one finished leather? Like to be able to move the guitar up and down without pulling my tshirt with it.
-
Ooh, they look nice. The couple of 4 inch ones on Amazon only seem to have two slats in the "ladder" tho, is that normal for Leathergraft?

Those Double Thruster pedals are insanely good, they're so close to the B3K as to be pretty much indistinguishable. This fella on the YouTubes put up a glowing review of the Joyo clones, and Darkglass made the decision (or mistake, depending on how you look at it) of sending him the originals so he could A/B them. He did, and here's the result: The Monomyth isn't quite right, but the Double Thruster is pretty much 100% bang on (starts testing the Double Thruster at around the 1:30 mark). 35 notes for one of these is a steal.

What the Christ is going on with those Lekato product videos? Both of those amazon pages have videos at the bottom with stone cold freaks spouting a load of incoherent shite over the absolute worst background music.
-
That second Levys one looks nice, but appears to have the same issue as the Lekato with the plastic strap extenders. The connector at the front looks like it's in exactly the right position to constantly scrape the back of the top horn on an SG.
-
I had a super thick strap like that, but with (silicone) straplocks on it always ended up unscrewing the strap buttons on my guitar over time sad face emoji. Really looking for one with "normal" thickness at the ends.

I gots me a bad back, so I likes me a nice wide strap. Spread the weight and all that. Got one of these t'other day : https://www.amazon.co.uk/LEKATO-Neoprene-Adjustable-Acoustic-Electric/dp/B0885SSQ56/ It's a combination of a fantastic 3.5 inch wide synthetic neoprene memory foam padded strap (the bit that rests on your body) and "standard" nylon strap extension with pleather ends. The "body" of the strap moulds exactly to my body, spreads the weight perfectly (my SG feels basically weightless wearing this) and doesn't catch on skin or clothing even when I'm sweating. Everything else about it is cheap junk, however, the pleather ends creak and catch, the plastic strap extender is flimsy and doesn't move freely, and is basically always in the right position to catch / scuff against the back of the instrument. Anyone know a nice wide strap that doesn't either cost the earth or have a load of plastic rubbish stuck on it? I usually use a leather 2-piece strap but can't find any that are wider than 2.5 inches, I'd love it if there was something like this neoprene strap body with the normal threaded 2-piece structure. Or if anyone knows the make of straps Josh Fossgreen & Mark Smith use on the YouTubes that would be good too, they both seem to wear super-wide 5 inch straps - Josh is 6 foot 7(!) and the strap he normally wears looks wide on him, so that must be a monster.

That course is for university staff & students only, alas, otherwise I would totes have had some of that. Thanks for the advice and offers of help, have found a small shop relatively close by in Huddersfield who didn't seem to think it'd be an issue to fix, they gave us a two week turnaround so hopefully I'll have some good news to share soon.

Cheers folks, will give the universities a try and keep pestering anywhere that offers pedal repairs I guess. It's not a fuzz face clone by any means, the base sound is like a richer, "creamier" muff but with a ton of tonal options and a gated, sputtery "rip" that can be blended in, along with a clean blend. Was surprised to see how relatively straightforward the circuit looks, I imagine some of those components may be fulfilling dual roles, hence the bafflement of everyone I've shown it to. There's certainly some strange mojo under the hood, but in a good way lol.

Appears to be, aye

Anyone know of a good mail order pedal repair service? Bought a fuzzbox off here a few months back and the f***er up and died on me a couple of weeks after I started using it. Gave it to my usual pedals guy who had the backplate off and just handed it back immedately as too complicated for him, gave it a to a local "specialist" who kept it for two months before admitting defeat and passing it back as well. The manufacturer doesn't exist any more (it's the Lucid Audio FX Fuzz-O-Potamus, think it's been through more than one pair of hands on this board lol) so there's no way of getting advice about what went into the original build unfortunately. If it didn't sound so good for the brief time I had it I'd bin it off but it very quickly became my favourite fuzz and I'd really like to get it repaired if possible. Does sound like it's a bit of a nightmare inside tho. I'm based near Leeds, I've tried all the "big" names locally and while one isn't answering the phone, everyone else has passed on it so it's time to look further afield. Anyone know a good pedal repair outfit that would be up for a challenge?

Had nothing but good experiences with Jim Croisdale of Jim's Guitar Workshop in Leeds, Jim's a lovely bloke who has done bang-up work on three of my basses now. Quick turnarounds and affordable prices, his website is at https://jimsguitarworkshop.co.uk/, he even offers a one day guitar tech course for those who want to learn the ins and outs of guitar setup and intonation etc.
