Not happened to me for ages, but they make me laugh. What is it for? To make the salesman look good? Fail. To demonstrate what the bass sounds like, even though you don't play slap yourself? Fail. Trying to intimidate me in some weird way so I'll buy the bass, even though you're clearly not as good as I am? Fail. Fail! Fail! Fail!

If I were a salesman I'd start off by asking a number of questions to find out what the customer is going to use the bass for, then building up some kind of rapport with them. At no point would I use any kind of scripted patter. I certainly wouldn't play a bass in front of a customer, unbidden.
