1. Perhaps you should edit the thread title "Dorset and Somerset Bass Bash 2014- Feb 23rd 2013: date confirmed" I'd love to come but don't have a tardis.
2. I'm concerned that it looks as if the frets run all the way around the neck, looks as if it would be horribly lumpy running up and down it. I also think that it looks like it belongs in a sci fi film.
3. I also do repairs in a music shop, looking at what was done (extra screws aside) we'd charge £15 to replace the jack. The strap pin is a quick job so £5-10 depending on the exact circumstances. We charge £8 to fit a set of bass strings. So a total of £33. Personally I would have advised you to get a new scratch plate as part of the repair but I'd never modify a customer's instrument without their permission.
4. I'd love to know how a loose strap pin is going to effect the Jack socket???
5. I know of several cases involving Chinese factories where the eventual instruments delivered bore little resemblance to the samples shown to the buyer.
6.
Tis a one piece maple neck- would it be possible to remove it through the skunk stripe at the back?
don't know, the one I did had the truss under the fretboard. Someone on this forum did pull one out from the heal end , like this : http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/137345-lite-ash-truss-rod-replacement.html
7. I had a no name jazz bass many years ago, thanks to the good folks here I found out that it was identical to the Antoria. I had assumed that the pictures were from a trade catalogue.
8. It is possible to replace a truss rod, it requires removing the board, not for the feint hearted, I've done it but I put a fretless board on , I didn't replace the original.
9. Shops can brand them themselves, it's called a "stencil line" , buy enough of them and we'll put on any name you like. A lot of budget brands are done this way, particularly stuff associated with one retailer.
10. You are in danger of heading in this direction As for what a set up like this in a single housing should be called how about "Motherf@ckerbucker"?
11. I spent a happy evening playing along with ABBA a few months back, I already knew that many of their songs are more complex than most pop but the bass lines are always a couple of steps away from the obvious root based lines that I was coming up with on the fly. I'm hoping that the local musical theatre group will do Mama Mia at some point , the bass job is mine even if I have to see to it that every other bass player in the South West has an unfortunate accident. Favourite song - SOS
12. My regular fretless is a bitsa made from spare parts from nameless sources , it cost about £80 in total plays like a dream , sounds great live. Sounded a bit muddy when recording straight into the desk but via my amp was great. I also have a light weight chambered plywood bitsa for festival gigs (you seem to end up carrying you gear for miles and then having to leave it in the back of a van belonging to some guy called "Boz" that you've never met before) that cost about £60.
13. I'll happily gig with a cheap bass, I do find that when recording a "higher quality" bass is easier to work with, much less time spent getting a good sound.
14.
the idea of a different bass for standing/sitting is nonsesne. the idea ,is to have the strap length the same. so, when you stand, you dont have to adjust the length at all. checkout how Billi Sheehan demonstratres it . probably on a you tube clip somewhere. posture is important.
not at all, if I have the strap in my ideal playing position when standing (as it is now) the bass touches my leg when sitting and in time hurts. Billy Sheehan's solution works fine for Billy Sheehan as it is based on his ideal playing position, I'm not Billy Sheehan. Some basses have a more comfortable shape for playing in a siting position, I think that P basses are more comfortable if rested on the leg.
15. My Jazz weighs a tun! Yes it's my leg that hurts, even if I'm careful not to put my arm across the bass. I'll finish this run on Sunday , I can cope until then, maybe cobble together a shorter strap. I'll probably use the P in future, it's lighter and more comfortable shape . Oddly enough the first act ends with 5 minutes of music on CD for a ballet, I have enough room to lye down. I even bring a sleeping bag and stretch out until the house lights come up.
16. I'm under the stage, I'm 6'2" , only 5' head room!
17. At the moment I'm playing in an orchestra pit and so have to play sitting down. I practiced for the show on my jazz but I'm noticing that it's quite uncomfortable to play on my knee for any length of time. So seated players how do you cope? I could shorten my strap to take the weight off my knee, but my strap is tricky to adjust and has stuck on strap locks. I could switch to precision , but the neck width could throw me , my hands are used to the jazz and I have enough to worry about sight reading, waiting for cues, counting bars on intros etc. Also the mix is just right in the band , I only have a few shows to do so I'll carry on with my current set up. Seated players - what's your preferred instrument/ set up?
18. The weird thing is that we are playing to full houses every time and I don't get any stage nerves.I will play all gigs from under the stage from now on.
19. Our musical director would wake us up at three o'clock in the morning and make us lick the pit clean etc (I've had a drink too)
20. Nothing to add except that I agree with you entirely.
21. "So this is where the prince holds his balls and dances!"
22. Cinderella, Frome Memorial Theatre.
23. Orchestra pit for a Panto. I'm actually under the stage. I get more space than the brass section at the other end : My view: We've done 4 or 5 shows so far I think we have five more to do.
24. For the next few days I'm in an eight piece pit band for a pantomime. We did a matinee and an evening show last night, matinee only today. Despite opening and closing the show with a One Dir@ction number it is great fun and I'm getting paid to learn to sight read.
25.
and this one http://www.thomann.d..._hbb1975_na.htm and it comes with nice bits you can sell, I will buy the pickups off you
Tempting, but for this project I'm not sure about the block mounts, I'm trying to match the guitarists Tele . The J&D is a block mounted one too, I love block mounts but they aren't required for this project. The Rocktile is still the favourite, I have £30 Amazon voucher to use that makes quite a difference to the price. I'll give it a couple more days thinking time and unless someone suggests a better one (or says they've tried a Rocktile and it was total sh*te ) I'll get it. Re the basswood body, I can't say I've tried one, If I hate it I can always sell it and move on. The project involving that isn't the priority.
