  1. Sorry to say there is no good resources other than a tutor... With the vids you are only going to gather information on how to use the bow.. Whereas a tutor will be able to tweak any queries you have... Just pay.. as its all an investment... You can buy books and watch vids but end of the day you are going to need solid guidance to make a good sound. Goodluck!
  2. JUST PAY its going to a good cause! =D
  3. The bow stroke must always be straight... "flat hair" on the strings for a full tone...
  4. Regards to the bow... Sounds like you have too much rosin in the hair... Take a fine hair comb and clean the rosin out of the hair and then attempt to play the bow until it has no more grip... Then reapply the rosin until it grips...
  5. Pretty sure those colleges i suggested offered "jazzers" too
  6. Focus on the foundations of bass playing... As all the fun stuff will come after...
  7. Contact tutors of the Royal northern college or birmingham conservatory! Liverpool Phil etc..
  8. Carbon Fibre over cheap "pernambuco"... No offence it's just not going to work! if you're going to spend £100+ then carbon all da waheyyyy
  9. carbon fibre over any cheap bow... and get some lessons....
  10. Then make a commute or online with a decent webcam for regular bass lessons or something!
  11. My last Rehair cost me close to £110 with delivery and recambering... However it came back like a beast
  12. @Fatback, Might be worth getting some lessons with a Classical tutor, if you are unfamiliar with his terminologies and need help with dat bow! _f
  13. Using the bow is more of a feeling thing than a guide book.... Go grab a tutor now You should see my tutor he will help you tremendously pm if you want his details! F
  14. Great! Just thought it was an easier way to say "LESS IS MORE..." However, if your bow needs the rosin don't be scared to apply! Also, I think it sounds better coming from a bass virtuoso than little olde mee Keep pluckin'! -F

  18. Go see Tim Gibbs or Caroline Emery... dey will explain it all....
  19. Its not only just gripping it "like an axe" it's also be posture during standing or sitting too... do stretch out, but it will not stop the pain... You have to be very careful when practicing as this pain can mature into RSI, carpel tunnel and other various issues that many musicians have... please just practice keeping the bow straight and your arm fully extended and the bow relaxed into the strings. Good luck!
  20. lol so much information that conflicts each other! I hope people who are reading these comments can make their minds up on how they want to approach it!
  21. Hey, It's wonderful to see people picking up the bow! A bit of info - Intonation doesn't extend from the bow its all from a solid understanding and dedication to the left hand... Which requires hours and hours of time and care to have "good intonation". Therefore, regardless of you playing with a bow or fingers (pizz), it won't make any difference with "being in tune" or not. A good solid left hand technique and a understanding of the mechanics behind the double bass will excel you're learning. Now, I'll back up what I'm saying with a theory... If you pluck the G string on the double bass, its going to sing "G". Then play "G" with the bow, the "G" will still be the same, but it will be more refined and precise with tone and sustain etc... But regards to the intonation, it's the same and it doesn't matter what tool you use in playing the double bass... So if you play "A" (Plucked) on the g string, but it's flat; by using the bow - won't correct the intonation... A shift in the left hand will and then checking it against the piano and then a tuner if you feel that you are not certain. Using the Bow will help you hear what note you are playing with more clarity. But, clarity isn't intonation. Just thought I'd add that in and let you make your own decision in what you need/want to do. Message me if you got any questions or don't understand what I've just said... All the best with your double bass endeavours. -F
  22. Don't put yourself down before you start. Just look at it as you have a desire for information and take your time in understanding! If you rush you either miss out important parts that underline your knowledge or you'll freeze and give up because " you're not learning fast enough"... i.e each and everyone has a different capacity for learning and speeds of learning some people are 2Gb RAM and others are 16Gb RAM... Doesn't mean that 2Gb person will not get it in the end just takes a bit longer, but worthwhile!! goodluck!
