With a separate signal chain for octave down?? 🤔

I understand where you are coming from, let me explain my view on this band.

One of the biggest stereotypes we have as bassists is that we play it because we are failed guitarists, or that it's an easier instrument to play with less strings.

Now my view is that he is in general playing the bass as if it was a guitar.

Before everyone rushes to slate me, its only my opinion and I'm more than happy to accept that I'm probably wrong.

Trying to copy the guy from Royal Blood with his separate signal chain for bass and octave up

Not to derail the thread but let's be honest that guy would be much better off playing guitar.

The added awkwardness is that it's a virtual audition..

Try to frame that in a different way. Try to think of it as you get to perform from the comfort of your own home, and chat in a place that feels comfortable and natural to you.

It also means you will have all your own gear, and you are more in control of the environment and situation in general.

Also you can put a picture of the circle of 5th somewhere only you can see 😎

Andertons offered a full refund but when you have your mind set on the matching amp to the Mesa cabs i just paid £2k for its a little bit annoying to say the least.

My problem is that since using Mesa gear now for past few yrs and loving it i'm loathe to change to something else as i get the sound i'm looking for from Mesa.

    Dave

Yup totally crap no matter what way you look at it.

  5. Really sorry to hear this Dave. Sounds like a great job from Andertons and a pretty shamefull business decision from Mesa / Gibson.

Customer service rule no1 should be fulfil outstanding orders.

Don't think I will be buying anything Mesa anytime soon.

  6. There's a couple of different fingerings for the intro that might help to get the speed.

For the attack play on the bridge Pick up and really hit the strings as hard as you can especially in the chorus.

I love playing along to that whole album it gives my fingers and proper work out as you really have to dig in to get close to Timmy C's tone.

SBL have a great YouTube video on The first Rage album, Ian really shows you how to go about getting that monster tone.

    Good luck and have fun!

Young fellow put a 2013 Rumble 150 115 on ebay with a starting bid of 175. I made an offer for 200 and he took it. It's very clean and plays great. There are several on reverb, etc. for another 50 dollars but mostly beat up looking. V1s, too, this is a V2. $200 is a steal.

Looks great! Always nice to get a bargain. Enjoy!

Multiple preamps are ok, and a lot of us use them (onboard, in the amplifier, some on pedals...). Just be sensible. You can boost the hell out of each of them, but you probably won't like the result.

Very good point here. Think of it like gain staging. Start with the onboard preamp pretty close to flat, then make the EQ and drive adjustments along the signal chain. This will give you the opportunity to go from pretty clean to filthy as you like. Also same with how present your mids are.

Does a effects loop bypass the preamp?

With most amps yes, you can go in through the effects return. However on some amps it will also bypass the volume control meaning you have to control the volume before it gets to the amp.

Would that cause any issues having three preamps in my signal chain?

There would be one in the bass, one on my pedal board and one in my amp

I guess the truth here is yes, like had already been mentioned you could run out of headroom. But the other truth is that the tone capsule is also a preamp just not in pedal form so would have the same effect.

I'm going to get a 5 string Sterling Stingray and darkglass tone capsule. A compromise we're all happy with.

Good decision, another route to go, instead of the tone capsule, you could use any of the darkglass pedals as a preamp. There is the harmonic booster which is closest to a clean preamp like the tone capsule but with more tonal variety.

  12. HiYup, being in a band is in general tough, and emotionally draining at times. Not having gigs to fill up the tanks is making it harder than ever.

The band I am in just now is the best band I have been a part of. One interesting thing is that none of us knew each other at all before starting the band, it all came together through chance meetings and Facebook groups.

The upside is that there was no personal history coming into the band, and actually we have all become really good friends over the 5 years of the band.

We just released our debut album, if anyone fancies a listen.

Apologies gentlemen, but I can beat that too!

I flew to San Francisco on a Friday evening, picked up a bass (a 9 string Pac Man Conklin form Jean Baudin) and flew back on Monday morning. On the Wednesday of that week I did a 1100 mile total round trip to collect a Mesa M-Pulse and Powerhouse cab as well as dropping off 4 of my eBay sales on route! My average speed for every hour of that time frame was in excess of 100mph and I clocked just over 12,000 miles total!

    Beat that! 😜

I've also taken a bus to Belgium to meet @Hellzero and flew to Croatia to meet @basscell ironically for the exact same bass!!

Oft I don't see anyone beating that...

I drove a 7 hour round trip to trade a bass in a motorway services.

Stopped, swapped, back onto the the motorway.

I doubt its a record though..

I can beat the 7 hours round trip trade when I drove to do a trade with @Kev Glasgow to roughly Coventry I think it was a 12 hours round trip from what I remember. Totally worth it though, it started my love affair with Alphers.

    Well, since you ask..

    Cheating. Simple as.

As a semi-pro 'singer/bassist' (been called a lot less) of 43+ years I have absolutely zero tolerance of it. I'd rather see people up there doing it live, whatever that entails. Mistakes, bum notes, warbles, chokes, whatever..

That is what should be on show from any performer IMO, warts and all as we used to say..

However, I've heard very reliable tales of entire vocals on DAT back in the day - in particular a very famous girl 'band' - with live mics dropped in to talk to the crowd etc simply because they were too bloody awful to do it live.

I've heard from reliable sources that pitch correction/autotune is massive when playing to arena audiences paying big bucks to see perfection.

In the past few years some MAJOR big bands doing huge stadium gigs have relied on PC/autotune live that I've heard about from guys behind the scenes - using some very expensive processing gear - but a paying audience member would never know, as long as they walk away happy, it's job done.

On the local pub circuit (when it was running) I've seen solo artists with an acoustic  guitar using it - really? Can I suggest you try practising more? 🤨

Maybe as well as being older, I'm also old fashioned - but personally, I give Pitch correction/Autotune a big NO.

Perhaps I'm just a grumpy, older git 🙄

    Each to their own.

Has to be said I'm sure the person who came up with the cart for horses was not happy about the invention of the car.

  16. I have absolutely no issue with it at all.  It's just another tool to be used.  Many have said it already on this thread but if it is used to clean up a great vocal performance its a great tool.

It's a little like distortion for guitar - didn't quite bend the note to where it should be, a little distortion will save the day.

Same with chorus on a fretless, a little out on your intonation? Some chorus will save the day.
