I'm not saying he wasn't a great musician (and obviously played on a lot of Metallica's best material) but he was basically a guitarist who played bass

You're entitled to your opinions but to describe Cliff as 'a guitarist who played bass' is way off the mark. Bass was his original instrument of choice which he took up aged 13 following his brother's death, and by all accounts was an extremely dedicated student of the instrument.
The fact that he enjoyed playing guitar toward the end of his life does not dilute his importance as a bass player.
As for Rob and Jason, few would deny Rob in particular is technically a far superior player but it's clear who is/was more suited to the job!

I've got the "entry level" version - it was called the Icon at the time, but I think they're called the Ignition series now...

I picked it up from Thomann with a fitted hard case and a "correct" strap for about £240. It sounds fabulous. For quite a light instrument, it really packs a punch. Mine still has the factory fitted strings, so I can only imagine what it would sound like with decent flats on.

I also did the trainspottery mods - flipped the pick ups, replaced the black knobs with "teacups", brassoed the "Icon" logo off the truss rod cover blah blah. They really are great basses - even the cheapo version. The real deal must be incredible!

I've got the same - also pimped with teacups! What do you mean by flip the pickups?
As for the strings, seriously, whack some flats on as soon as you can - it will bring the bass to life! Mine's got the Hofner flats with the dark green silks. Joyous thump.

Memory can play tricks on us all, but I just double checked and according to Martin's autobiography No Easy Road (page 111 to be precise). It is all explained in some detail: essentially two months passed between recording Argus and album release during which time Martin made the transition for the Rickenbacker to a Thunderbird for gigging when the "live" inner gate fold sleeve shots were taken

Plus Ricky 4001s of the early 70s era (I had one: why did i ever sell it) used to have adjustable rubber mutes under the bridge cover to facilitate muting, so the palm muting effect would have been very possible.

I'd thought I'd lost my Anorak!

I've got that book. He's wrong.
The sound of Argus cannot be replicated with a Rick - the pickups are in the wrong place. There's lots of clips on YT of recent MT Ash gigs, some with the Rick - it sounds totally different.
re: foam mutes - these are troublesome things that cannot be switched on and off at will. MT's only palm mutes here and there on Argus and often quickly reverts to standard picking - the intro to 'Blowin' Free' and the verses of 'Time Was' for example.
I have a Cataldo bass - essentially a Thunderbird with a maple bolt-on neck and repro 60s pickups - and on the front pickup only (as per MT) it's instant Argus.

Imagine my consternation, when Martin told me years later, that despite the Argus sleeve pic with a T'Bird he actually used a Ricky 4001 for recording that album!!! So your Good to Go Ez old boy!

I hate to be 'that person' but Martin's memory is playing tricks on him. Argus is a Thunderbird. Pilgrimage is the Rick. Completely different sounds.
Argus is also full of palm-muting which he couldn't have done with his Rick.

Cosmo, the guy is good, he will sound good on any bass. It's the way this stuff works.

He probably would sound good on any bass, but your original point was, "I think he would have a similar tone and sound regardless of what bass he was playing, IMO", which is ridiculous - an Epiphone Rivoli with dead flats would not sound the same as the Alembic in the clip.
The result would would probably still sound like the same player but the tone would be polar opposite.
