So, ever since I started to get into bass and learn bass there has been one bass I've wanted, i've always love Fenders and have had several Precisison's and Jazz's over the years (I still have 2 jazz basses that I love) but I've always hankered after a Rickenbacker, a 4001 or 4003, today I finally got a Rickenbacker 4003 and it's everything I hoped. Sensational. Obvs had to take the silly pickup cover off and it's just a rock machine. Very happy.
Congratulations! I definitely recommend a bezel to go around the treble pickup - but don't get the 'official' Rickenbacker one as it only fits if the pickup is straight, which as we know, most aren't... yours doesn't look to wonky actually!
The whole RIC treble bezel thing is pretty disgraceful anyway, ripping off another company's design. Pay extra for the original. It's much better quality as well.
And the most important thing of all - peel those stickers off 😂

Welcome to the Ric owners Club! I love my 4003s and use it all the time at present. I had a 4003 mapleglo back around 2009 but sold it on after a gig and recording session. Always regretted that so when I found a competitively priced 4003s a couple of years ago, I snapped it up! This one has recorded a whole album and done quite a few shows up until lockdown. It's about to record a new album and goes back out live at the end of the month. As you can see like @PigBass I too recommend removing the cover and getting the bezel fitted.
That looks amazing with the black TRC and scratchplate.

Hang on - the case was wrapped in clingfilm?! Reminds me of how Dawson's sent me my Thunderbird case...

Mate, so happy to see this. It's been a long time coming!
Straight away I saw one of my favourite KISS basslines - Got Love For Sale - so I'm happy. Do Escape From The Island next!
Edit: Just noticed Escape From The Island is already there! Top man!

Eric Idle is a pretty useful guitarist, but the reason that he may not be 100% convincing as a Bassist here, is the fact that he’s a right handed musician, playing the role of someone who’s left handed. Here’s a little test- flip your bass around the other way and try and play something that sounds like music and look convincing while you do it.
I can't play left handed, but I can convincingly hold a pick and move it up and down to make it look like I can!
It astounds me that in a film that makes such an effort with authenticity, Neil Innes didn't pull Eric to one side and have a word... even people who can't play an instrument know it looks odd.
Perhaps it was on purpose to wind up people like me.

Eric Idle's stiff waggling fingers make my teeth itch.

The aluminium foil worked. Put in two layers and that stopped the humming. Thanks again 👍
As mentioned, the new gold bridge feels so much lighter than the original chrome one. I now weighted them both and look at the the difference. The gold bridge weighs less than half of the chrome one! Can this be true? I mean, is the gold bridge genuine? Does anyone know of fake Spector bridges?
Brass vs aluminium maybe?

I know Sherwood and Chris Squire were friends, and he was Chris' choice to succeed him in Yes. He does a decent job, but, in a like-for-like comparison, I think Lee does it better. Here's Sherwood tackling Heart Of The Sunrise:
I mean, I like his Spector, but it doesn't sound right.
I hate the way they play that. The bass riff is sitting on the wrong beat.
To be fair they've done it like this since Alan White joined, but it sounds so wrong to me.
And Geoff Downes is a blundering oaf completely undeserving of the job.

I only saw Yes (with Squire) twice, and to be honest both times I felt that Steve Howe was the weak link. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all, but his timing was fairly dreadful and he played a sackful of extremely bum notes. Mind you, I had trouble hearing him at the second of the gigs... 3 rows from the front at Chris Squire's side of the stage, all I could hear -- and feel -- was his backline. First time he hit the bass pedals, I swear I could feel my teeth loosening
Lee Pomeroy, god he plays with everyone. He has the best job in the world. Well, him and @Dave Swift
Steve Howe is a bit shakier these days. He seems to have lost the fire, both from his playing and his tone. That's not a recent development, mind you.
It's not pleasant hearing the opening to Siberian Khatru played as light jazz.

I bought Richard's VT Bass pedal. And very nice it is too! A great chap to do business with.

This version ?
The sound he's using is working well in the mix and it's not that dry nor ultra clean either. The slap part could have been avoided (I think I don't like slap 🤣 ). The tapping is Stuart Hamm signature...
This is a recent one. Still sounds dry and clean to me, but we all hear these things differently!
This is the one. Going back about 20 years I reckon.

I was lucky enough to see this lineup on the London date. It's a pity it wasn't sustainable but the DVD is a wonderful recording, apart from the bewildering level of fake crowd noise plastered randomly over the top.
Lee Pomeroy - wonderful. I've never seen a bass player project so much joy when playing.
As for the current 'official' Yes, well... a quick look at Geoff Downes attempting to play Wakeman and Moraz's parts tells you everything.

But on a Rush tune (with no vocals), the bass is one of three instruments. Its a very different situation to a tune which might have 2 guitars, keys, vocals where the bass must find its place in 1/6 of the sound sphere. I think if you re-recorded it with a clean and tidy bass tone, it would sound somewhat 'hollow' or 'sparse'.
There was a celebrity Rush covers album a few years ago. Stu Hamm played on YYZ.
It's not a direct comparison as the entire production is very different to the original, but Hamm's ultra clean and dry tone really doesn't work in that song. Not to my ears anyway!
