I've come across a couple of people who've commented negatively on his playing with the Who. However for me he's actually improved the role of the bass in that setting because for once you can hear it properly!!

That was always Entwistle's problem. Too content to just stick to the root notes and thump away.

Not many mentions for "Going For The One" here. It's one of my Top 5 albums by anyone, ever.

Sure, it's a little bit more polished, but IMHO every tune on it is utterly perfect.

(Perhaps this is related to my fungi experimentation of some decades ago, to which it was the main soundtrack. :) )

I love GFTO, but not fungi.

A very special instrument may have some tiny detail which just makes you hate it. Downright hate it.

    We've all been there...

A late vote for my friend Simon at SMB guitars:

The website isn't that great, but he has made quite a few basses, some 'standard', some a bit more eccentric. I've been disucssing a potential custom build with him for a while now.

If you're on Facebook, there are lots more pictures on there.

Howe is a scrappy guitar player but somehow it works. Like Steve Hackett.

I wouldn't describe either of those as scrappy... of course they could be when the music demanded it, but it didn't seem to be their inherent style.

Incidentally, I just realised last night that poor Rick doesn't get a single writing credit on the new live record / DVD. A bit of an eye-opener, that.

He co-wrote the songs they play from Fragile, but he was never credited at the time as he was still contracted to A&M as a solo artist. It would seem that still stands!

Thread revival. I've just picked up the ARW Blu-Ray thingy and it's bloody great.  The performances, visuals and mix are marvellous.

    That is all.

The canned applause is distracting, and frankly bizarre, but the performances and the sheer joy is something to behold. Pomeroy is amazing.

Did a gig with a metal band in Norwich supporting Dumpys rusty nuts

    They used our PA

Did a soundcheck, then a  group of Hells angels turned up and sat at the back of the hall

We played then Dumpys started. Midway thro their set they did  a song about british bikes being better than Jap ones.

The angels didn’t like this and one rode his bike (Kawasaki) into the middle of the hall and did a donut (spinning back wheel into a circle) and parked it up.

N0-one went near the bike!  Lol

When all was done we were packing up when suddenly the Angels went beserk!

Smashing each other with chairs, tables and fire extinguishers, also kicking each other in the heads!

I was sat at mixing desk not daring to look round when a HUGE man in a boiler suit and shades tapped me on the shoulder.

He then started to push buttons on the mixing consule, so I slapped his hand to stop! OMG what was I thinking!

Luckily he just stopped, then I asked him what he thought of the gig… Great he said

On the way out they trashed everything in their path!

Our roadies (all stood hiding in a doorway) said they had my back if it kicked off!  Hmmmm

And to top it all… we got locked in the car park! So slept in cars and lorry until someone strangely opened the gates at 4am

Mind you one of the roadies got a blow job in the lorry!  Lol  (and yes from a girl fan)

Not a night I would like to repeat!

Funnily enough, my first though when reading this thread was when my old band supported Dumpy's Rusty Nuts... Luckily it wasnt anywhere near as horrendous as your experience!

Here's how faithful your reproduction is.  Cosmo's white Epiphone against a cardinal red 1960s Gibson.  I've lined this up against the neck dots.

    Yep, pretty faithful reproduction.

The upper fret access is much better isn't it? You've got me thinking about a pink Thunderbird now...

Seriously though @NancyJohnson, you seem to be getting a bit angry about all this. Only one person on here has replaced their truss rod cover. Nobody's trying to get one over on Gibson . There's just a lot of us happy that there's finally an affordable Thunderbird that does what we want. And does it extremely well to boot.

I'd be interested in whether these people who say things are better than the original have just read this somewhere or even been in the same room as one.

I've played and owned several Thunderbirds, including Gibsons. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but you don't appear to have tried these Epiphones either.

Sigh.  This saddens me and it's just one step removed from people who put Fender decals on Limelights.  You all love and want the look of a Thunderbird, but you want to excise the actual manufacturer.  Man alive, just step up and buy a Gibson.

I don't want to excise Gibson. I just think Epiphone make a better Thunderbird. Or rather, they make one better suited to my tastes and ideas of what a Thunderbird ought to be.

    Epi Vintage Pro.
Price point, quality, tone, weight - all just right. It's a no-brainer for dipping your toes in and may be the only one you ever need...

I'm trying to find a reason not to buy another one. I quite fancy a black one... maybe with flats and pickup/bridge covers...

The only downside so far for me is the bridge pickup cover, which it turns out is exactly where my fingers want to be. I've removed the cover obviously (and yes it is a horrid lump of plastic), but now have a gaping hole and sharp metal edges for my fingers to get used to. Thinking I might make up a cover out of sheet metal, but not sure if I'll be able to do that with nice shiny chrome to preserve the look. Any tips welcome from folks who have come up with a solution to this!

    Cheers

Pricey, but worth it. Congratulations on your new Rickenbacker!

Look at the first pic - the nut is slightly out of position. A light tap in the right direction, and Hey Presto! Robert is your mother's brother, or something.

I hadn't noticed that! I was more concerned by the E and G being wrapped the wrong way round the posts. A common error with these basses.

Needs a set up and the action lowered (significantly). Could do with a new set of strings - fortunately I have a few.

It is gorgeous. I remember gazing at these in wonder at the guitar shop near school. Such a strange headstock, so modern and elegant compared to the Fenders and Rickenbackers drawn all over my schoolbooks! I must have been 13, so just as the obsession was beginning!

Never got to play one sadly. I think they would be too dinky for me, but I'd love a go!

Different amps and manufacturers work in different ways. Some will completely bypass the pre amp by plugging into the fx send and return, some will mix, some will bypass the preamp by using the ashdown method, and some, like markbass, can't be bypassed at all.

Note to self - don't buy a Markbass amp 😂
