1.
Nothing sharper than this site : the man gives all the details on all the subjects. Respects and congrats.
Would agree this is one of the best sites around - although I don't think its been updated for some years. There are excellent books by George Gruhn and Andre Duchossoir amongst others which I would highly recommend if you're into this. Something which I don't think I've seen here is reading pot codes (apologies if you have). This will give you a year and week of production of the pot. Although (like every other method) its not 100% fool proof it can be very informative in dating, or more often ruling out certain dates for an instrument. There's plenty of info on the web regarding dating pots from the codes - it's pretty easy. See here http://zeus.lunarpag...es/potcodes.htm and you'll also find a bit on the site mentioned above. For owners of 70s Fenders beware though - in '66 Fender bought tons of pots, so they crop up frequently on later instruments. I think the message is that dating Fenders is often not an exact science - this is inherent in their 'bolt together' construction method, such that different parts can straddle a year (or even a couple) of years - I have a 1989 serial numbered Jazz bass with a September 1990 neck date, a good 9 months difference at least. Given that no one indicator is going to offer 100% exact dating my advice would be to check all the things you can - model, finish, hardware, logos, serial, neck date, pots codes, case style (if you've got the original), the list goes on. The may come together to pinpoint a date. Unfortunately in many cases, they lead to a contradiction - Fender eh?! Bets of luck
 2. Thanks for that. I'll give it bash. Fortunately I had a 2x9v battery compartment fitted in the back of the bass after getting fed up with having to take the control plate off.
 3. My bass in making some strange noises and I wonder if anyone can offer up any guidance before I start looking at costly replace/repair options. The bass - 1989 Fender Jazz, Hipshot, Badass II bridge The Electronics - EMG J set, bought and fitted approximately 2007. EMG BTC active circuit, bought and fitted approximately 1997. Wired up in 18v configuration. The problem - After some time playing (20-30 minutes) the bass starts to make intermitent noises at irregular intervals. There seem to be two elements to the noise. A popping sound, and a rush (sounds like someone going shhhh, so lower than a hiss). Turning the volume down on the bass gets rid of the noise, and I don't think it goes when I pan the pickups (although it only lasts about a second, so it's difficult to catch it to work it out). So I'm guessing it's an issue with the circuit rather than one of the pickups' preamps. I've checked all the connections and the batteries seem to have plenty of juice. If anyone has come across anything like this before, or has any bright ideas as to how to address this I'd be most grateful. Cheers, Ben
 4.
Did you ever sell this?
Nope, kind of forgotten about it. Got it in London now, so will give it another bash.
 5. So a Tokai Jazz sound sold on Ebay for £508 on the 5th of March. The buyer then sold it on the 18th of April for £446. Maybe it's just me but this seems a little odd. £500+ is top dollar for one of these. I would have thought that to pay that you would really have to be after this particular model (maybe a Tokai enthusiast or collector) and pretty much know what you were getting. Given that it seems unusual to keep it for a couple of months and sell it on at a loss. 1st sale http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150742200790&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBUAA:GB:3160#ht_500wt_1413 2nd sale http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1982-Tokai-Jazz-Sound-/120894317820?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c25dce4fc#ht_500wt_1413
 6.
Great rig/price. I used to play this set up and it's great for double bass. I even did a few loud bass guitar gigs with it, no problems.
Thanks for the praise Geoff. I'll add that I used the rig for gigs which involved switching between electric and a Palatino electric upright. Very versatile.
 7. Gallien Krueger MB150E Microbass Combo with matching 112MBX extension cabinet + footswitch and speaker cable £500 collected from central London or plus delivery costs if required. This is an awesome portable little rig. Great sounding, packed with features and portable. Adding the extension cab makes a huge difference and increases the headroom enough to make this loud enough to deliver any stage volume I’d require a reasonably sized venue (although it may not be for you if your guitarist is exceptionally loud or play large-ish venues with no PA). To the best of my knowledge this is a series I. Superficially the amp appears identical to the current model other than a slightly redesigned face-plate. I believe the series 3 (i.e. the newest model) differs internally and runs slightly cooler. The footswitch is also included which switches the boost and chorus features in and out. I wont bother listing all the various tech specs here for fear of boring you - manual is available here which is much more comprehensive than anything I can write. http://www.bassempor...gkmicrobass.pdf Like all GK gear it’s built like a tank and has served me well being 100% reliable. It is in what I would consider to be good condition given the amount of use it has had, and like any well used piece of gear shows some wear.
I'm reluctantly selling this great rig as I've just picked up a new Aguilar Tonehammer 500 and Barefaced cab and can't justify keeping the GK as well and don't have the space - hence no trades please! I don't want to split the rig as I don't want to end up with half of a complete rig which won't be a great deal of use to me. Happy to answer any questions or arrange for potential buyers to come around for a try. I'm in central London E1, with easy parking and easily accessible by tube.
 8. ***SOLD*** SWR Working Pro 1x15 including padded cover In close to as new condition Great value for money 1x15" cab from SWR. Superb for rehearsal use, not to big to transport about and easily loud enough for to gig. Sounds great on its own and works really well with a 2x10" or as an extension cab for a combo. I've done all three. I've kept this cab for occasional rehearsal use and otherwise the cover has been on it. As a result it is in close to as-new condition. The covering has no bobbling at all and the only signs of any use are a few small marks on the plastic corners where a rack has been sat on it. Here's the spec: 200 watts 1x15" speaker Piezo tweeter w/attenuator Speakon and ¼" speaker jacks Side handles Chrome-powdercoated shock-mounted grill Impedance: 8 ohms I am based in East London E1 with easy parking and really close to public transport. 9. Thanks to all for a great day. Special thanks to Alex for brining my new compact down. Mcgraham, cheers for the technique tips, genuinely very helpful.
had a sneaky play on someones Sadowsky P bass...very very very nice indeed
Glad you liked it!
 10.
Excellent. I'm bringing my pair of Aguilar SL112s. It would be interesting to run them with your TH500 if possible.
Sure. No problem
 11. Not been to one of these before, so as I'm in the area and Alex has kindly offered to bring along my new Compact I've got on order, it seems like this is something I should check out. Please add me to the list if that's cool. I can bring along a 1967 Jazz Bass, Sadowsky NYC P Bass, Aguilar TH500, Barefaced Compact (assuming all goes to plan).
Is anyone bringing an Aguilar TH500 Tone Hammer?
Yes
 12.
I'm very surprised this is still here. I've recently "acquired" two very nice basses - a Sadowsky and a Stingray, but I'd still be tempted.....
My Sadowsky is due shortly. What model did you get? If you're around town at any point soon I'd love to get a peek of it.
 13.
That looks SOOOOOOOOOOOO nice.
Yep it's a great bass.
 14. Thanks for all the positive replies. It's gotta be cash I'm afraid Jack. If it weren't for our a new Sadowsky and an awful exchange rate, I wouldn't be selling it. Bassbod (I wont reveal his real name!) is spot on with the neck. It's definitely chunky compared to a Jazz Bass, but super comfortable and I'm a small handed chap. I find it quite similar to a late 50s style P Bass and is not too far off a Stringray. Ben
 15. ***THIS BASS IS NOW SOLD*** Absolutely stunning Bravewood precision bass which unfortunately has to go as I have a new Sadowsky on the way and the exchange rate is killing me. Lightweight body, one piece maple neck all finished in Nitro cellulose Olympic White. Unlike most Bravewood basses this has a factory fitted Badass II bridge and Seymour Duncan Basslines 'Quarter Pound' pickup. Although not strictly 'vintage' I think the bass is all the better for it. Photos of the bass as it appeared new are still on the Bravewood site. http://www.bravewoodguitars.co.uk/customercomments.html (go about 2 thirds down the page, Luke from Slough) and I believe the listing from when it was originally sold is still on the forum somewhere. You'll notice it originally had a black pick guard. I've since replaced this with an anodized guard as the Olympic White and Maple neck, give it that cool late 50s look. You could easily chnage it back, or I have a tortoise guard which I can switch to if you'd prefer. The bass was made in 10/10 condition and is starting to show some signs of genuine playing wear. A 'real' Bravewood relic, well 9/10 maybe! The finish is absolutely superb, one of the best I've seen on a Fender style bass, and the build quality is superb. The neck has a lovely subtle flame. This is leagues ahead of any of the Fender custom shop basses or alternatives such as Nash who simply assemble Fender licensed parts. This is a custom built instrument through and through. I'd been looking in the region of £950 ono. I'm open to sensible offers on this. Happy to answer any questions
 16. Got the 210 home and hooked it up to my SWR SM400S. Sounds amazing! Thanks. WOld also recommend the head to anyone who's interested. Sounded great when i tried out the cab.
 17. I have been lucky enough to have been bought a Palatino VE-500 as a present by my long suffering bass widow. I'd like to use for gigs but need to make quick change overs from electric to EUB, so ideally I would like the Palatino on a stand ready and waiting to go. I have read mentions of people using cymbal stands to do this. I guess by sliding the boom with the end removed into the retracted end pin maybe? Can anyone whose done this tell me there experiences with this. Is there a particular brand of stand which works well? Is there another method which is better? Sorry if this has been covered on another thread, but I couldn't locate it. If it has please point me in the right direction. Many thanks
 18.
Thanks! I'm in West Brom Ben, just outside Birmingham. Would be happy to meet halfway if it suited you (Cheltenham/Tewkesbury?).
Thanks for letting me know. Just weighing up a few options right now, so I'll be in touch when I've had a proper think ...Using a 8x8 at the mo - new smaller cab/new smaller combo.. etc etc
