I notice a L2000 tribute is on Guitar Guitar website with a very big reduction. I wonder if it's a stinker?

By the way I own a G&L tribute L2500 and the QC is excellent.

Looks like they have 2, one of which I tried in Birmingham, and yes it was not good.

  2. Ashdown - RM sized ABM, or at least an RM in ABM colours. Also standard variable fan that's only on when it's getting warm to allow it to be used at home without it sounding like someone is vacuuming in the next room.

Yamaha - Something modern that isn't a very slight variation on a previous model. Fanned fret RBX style I would probably go for as long as it isn't in a dull colour.

Dingwall - On/off Pickup selector switches rather than a 4 way which doesn't allow every pickup option. Not sure if this is viable wiring wise however.

  3. Use mine regularly - sometimes alone sometimes with a 210 as well (or vice versa). Not flimsy, sounds good. Easy one handed carry for quite a distance too (about 150m at last gig including stairs). As with any 112, there are limitations for how big a venue it can cope with, 2 however should sort you out until you need PA support. I used the 2 cabs last week in a large conference room without PA support, was fine.

n.b. I moved the logo so it would look 'correct' on it's side, there are rubber feet on 2 sides to allow this.

  4. I've had 2 x L-2000s over time (both Tribute). I decided to try one out in GuitarGuitar a few weeks ago to remind myself what they're like, and the quality had massively declined compared to the ones I'd had 5-10 years ago. Setup are personal, but the main issues were quality and finishing QC (bad paint job, loose parts etc). Add that to the price on them going up - I'd be looking 2nd hand if I wanted one currently.

Pic 1 - burst has terrible paint spatter, not good enough on a £600 instrument

Pic 2 - it appears they moved from ash to poplar bodies also which helps them look like cheap Squiers now

I had one. I totally hated it.  bad fret ends, felt really cheap. And i mean really badly put together  Of course i cant speak for every one but your money would be better spent on a Squire imo. I dont care if it had hipshot hardwear i would still stay away.

I had a sunburst/maple one from eBay as it went cheap. It felt 'OK' but it did feel a bit heavy, the pickups were also extremely hot, and the top end was too much. Sold it a few weeks later for same price.

Agree on Squier as a better option.

I liked the John Myung signature when I played one at a guitar/bass show.

I've got one, it is not the gritty rock bass you expect. It has a very clean tone, the preamp is fairly timid - but it's great for recording.

Reason I ask is , I use the same model or the passive and it was the worse tone sucking P.O.S ever.

I didn't listen to that signal alone, but the 4 combined (clean DI / 2 x amp mics / Amp post EQ DI) so hard to advise if this happened here also.

  8. I use a D-Roc 5 and NG-2 in an originals hard rock/grunge band.

Generally clean tone but with occasional light drive. The passive D-Roc probably is easiest to fit in soundwise and I tend to use the Bridge & Middle pickups in parallel (sounds like a passive Stingray). Whilst the NG needs the treble rolling back a bit to not be too spicy, I tend to use both pickups in parallel or the neck alone (close as it'll get to a P).

I recorded for our new single yesterday - ran the D-Roc basically clean into DI and it sounded immense. Still very clearly a Dingwall, but without the clank most people are used to hearing.

  9. I've had a fair few Yamahas over the years (all RBX or BB). Every one of them was a good instrument - but very few of them however really inspired me.

Their current lineup is very conservative and nothing really has changed for several years. If they conjured up a multiscale 5 string based on the RBX (ideally with a non-boring finish) I would be on it like a tramp on a kipper. However they tend to shy away from 'trends' and keep a design for many years with little revision apart from maybe a different shade of brown.

That said - my 1999 RBXJM2 is staying as it looks amazing and I think the best looking bass they made:

Cheap property for boomers is a myth, pure and simple.

I have a similar story from my parents, they however made about £20k on the endowment policy (the house was £13k in 1978).

Add that now to the house being worth about £290k, not a bad return (admittedly the money is non-existent unless it gets sold). That said, mine has gone up about £30k in 12 months, but I doubt it'll go for £4.6m in 40 years.
