1. Oh my god I think this used to be mine! In fact I am 100% this is my old stingray (just checked against old pictures no two wood grains could be that close) Anyway this is the best playing stingray out there, the neck is a dream and it has one of the nicest grains I have ever seen on a natural bass. Good luck with the sale, i just wish I had the cash to buy it back
2. Got a few questions so I have sent you a PM. Thanks, Nathan
3. Hello everyone, My band Spiritual Machines ( www.myspace.com/spiritualmachinemusic ) are playing two gigs this coming weekend in Cardiff. We will be playing with another local Cardiff band THE AGE on Friday 3rd July at the Buffalo Bar:11 windsor Place and i think entry is free before 11. We will also be playing with Chief (Folk Rock from california) Bedford Falls (Power Pop Rock) Peachfuzz (not too sure of their stuff) on Sunday 5th July. Doors open 7:30 and tickets are £6 but if anyone wants to come I can send you a flyer to print and get £1 off entry if you want. both nights should be good and 4 bands for £5 on sunday has got to be worth it. If you are in the area please come say hello. Many thanks, Nathan
4. I had a look at the Ashdown site and its not the same as the Entwhistle 2x12. I did a bit of digging and I did find a 2x12" cab Ashdown mase in 98 but it was apparently stopped in 98 and looks like the really old ABM stuff. The cab I have seen is about the size of a 4x10 but has the two twelves offset like the EBS 2x12. It is also the really new ABM design with the big silver round handles on the side, big Ashdown emblem on the front and metal grill. It looks brand new and by the looks of it has the blue speakers. I have no idea but might ring Ashdown tomorrow and see if it is legit and see if they can tell me more.
was it like the one jon entwhistle used?i think there is a picture of it on ashdowns website.Or i think they made a few in a normal abm cab, probably the size of their 4x10 cabs.whichever one it is they are now discontinued.if it has the celestion drivers in i would think it sounds sweet.imo those drivers are much better than the blueline ones they use now.
5. Hello, I have been looking at changing my cab for a while now as the ABM 4x8 cab I have, as brilliant as it is, is just not moving enough bass for my liking. i am thinking about adding a 15" to the setup but not sure I want the hassle of two cabs to move. Anyway, I just went to my local shop and they have a Ashdown ABM 2x12" cab rated at 4ohms. I know my ashdown gear reasonably well and I have never seen or heard of this cab before. Its seems like an ideal solution, bigger cab, bigger speakers and will allow me to get the full power out of my ABM EVO II 300. It also has a HF tweeter which look sas if it is switchable! Does anyone out there know what happened to this cab, where it came from or has anyone got one or used one? i am going to take my head and bass around next week but just after some info in the meantime. Cheers. Nathan
6.
I shall see what I can do...
WooHoo! I expect it to a bit like the A team van but with a sporty finish and some nice alloys, and maybe Bernie Goodfellow hanging out the side with some bling around his neck and a mohawk! (gone a bit too far i think, office work does that to a man) Many thanks.
7. This is one of my favourite threads at the moment as I have some serious serious GAS for GB spitfire. Anyway firstly very jealous about the whole Tal thing but sadly I am more excited about the GB VAN! can we see some pictures???? Cheers Nathan
8. Hello Did these sell on ebay? I may be interested in the 1x15 if its still about. Thanks, Nathan
9. This bass is owned by the guy that runs my local shop. I have played it and it is unbelievable, simply stunning in every way and I nearly put myself in heavy debt to buy it. I only just resisted.
10. From a guitar and bass point of view I thought the whole thing was a complete waste of time and money. It was by far the worst year and has just been getting worse and worse IMHO. I remeber going to the original London Guitar Show before they moved to the Excel and it was amazing. I even remeber there being Celinder basses there one year. There were more freebies everyone was friendlier and more willing to let you play and it just had a better vibe for me. I was dissapointed there was a no show from some large companies as some others have said but the whole thing just seemed botched! I knew Overwater and Fender were not going but was interested to see other companies that were there. I was so looking forward to seeing and playing some Lakland Skylines as I have really loved the look of them. I was terribly dissapointed. I was however totally shocked by a few bases I didnt think I would like. The Peavey Cirrus basses both on the peavey and Trace stands were brilliant, played amazing as did the 5 string TRB on the yamaha stand, what and instrument. Also pretty much every bass on the Warwick stand I found very playable particularly the maple? streamer 5 custom......wow! I was fortunate enough to catch a brilliant talk that Dave marks did with a guitarist (forgot his name now) about riffs and song building. It was great really enjoyable and by far the highlight of the day, and i fell in love with Daves white Marcus Jazz. I also had a good chat with the chap at the Apple stand who was very enthusiastic and knowledgable. I also caught TM stevens which I thought was just over-indulgent and noisy, particularly when Marco Mendoza and another guy came on stage.....3 bass players is 2 too many IMHO. I left after 3 minutes... Anyway wont go next year, Im with Fender and Gibson, waste of time and money!
11. Hello all. Very reluctantly I am putting my DHA VT1 EQ Bass Drive up for sale. I have a few bills to pay and don't want to get any further into the overdraft so thought I would sell off a few luxury items before things get bad and basses have to be sold.........sad times! This is a fabulous piece of kit and has hardly been used since I bought it in April. As many of you are probably aware Dave Hall makes fantastic pedals and this is no exception. It does quite a lot so I will direct you to the DHA website for full info: http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/Products,%20...ss%20Drive.html Basically it is a valve drive pedal with 3 band EQ, a DI box, headphone practice amp and is generally a nice tool to have. It also has some neat features like the Q control which allows you to set the centre frequency of the mid control and a bright switch which increases treble response without losing the mids and low end. You can also plug in another device such as a IPod and play along which has been really handy learning new tunes for the band. Just worth a mention it works on both 9 and 12v but sounds a little better with the 12v if I am honest. It is built like a tank and I love it to pieces its just a shame that its one of only a few valuable items I own except my basses. It gives some lovely subtle valve tones when used with my Ashdown but also does a very good job of recreating the bass sound from Hysteria by Muse if you fancy something a bit more full on. Its also worth noting that this can also be as clean as you like should you want it to be. I have also found it ever so useful for beefing up the sound from my passive Fender, and The EQ also helps in tricky rooms if you don't have the onboard electronics. I have mostly used it with headphones for silent practice at home and it has been used at a couple of practices recently but it has not been out live yet so it still has that new smell to it. Anyway to business. I am happy to send it almost anywhere and I am based in Cheltenham if anyone wants to come and play it. As it is so new and unused I would like something around £140 for it and this will include the instructions and a mutli voltage power adaptor. If you feel this is a little high PM me an offer and I will happily consider it but I would rather hang on to it and hit the overdraft than let it go for stupid money. There is some feedback on here somewhere so buy with confidence, and happy to take paypal. 12. Check out the Dave Hall Amps VT1 bass EQ. Dave has a section on this forum and would answer any questions you have. I bought one a few months back and it has been brilliant. It has bass input headphone out and you can also plug another line in such as a laptop (great for jamming to youtube) or MP3 player. It also works extremely well as a valve preamp and general bass grind/distortion unit and gives me an awesome sound to play Muse Hysteria. I am sure has more tricks up its sleeve that I forgot to mention, oh yeah bass DI but you can read through that on the website. There are a couple of glowing reviews on here and you can check out Dave Hall Amps here: http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/Products,%20...ss%20Drive.html These are custom built and Dave will paint them whatever color you want (within reason) best part is they are £149 with a power adaptor which is a fair chunk under the price of a new EBS plus they look much better IMHO.
13. Been through various strings, labellas, rotos, ernie balls, elites, daddrio .....always come back to slinkies on my 5. They seem to stay quite bright throughout their life and have never noticed them suddenly go dead or lose their zing quickly. like others though i dont like that super bright string sound. On the odd occasion where they have got very dirty and have gone dead after a lot of playing, I have boiled em up and they keep on going. Personally I wouldnt put roto's on my bass if someone gave them to me, but strings are a very personal thing and I dont think there is ever a right or wrong, same as basses i suppose.
14. That is lovely I have always preffered the look of Sei and Overwater, but now i am starting to change my mind. Some of the new basses on the site are amazing and I am really starting to lovfe his jazz headstock. I really want a custom built jazz at the moment and was leaning towards Sei but i may have to rethink that a bit! Just out of interest and because i am a big gossip, who else famous has he knocked back?
15. Good stuff definately check one out. I am actually thinking about a scratch plate on mine but going without the bell plate. i am also going to get some vintage style jazz bass knobs to replace the chrome ones and maybe even put a pickup cover over the neck pickup. Hopefully getting the aguilar put in today but i am losing the switch in favour of making it an actice passive swith as I never really had a need for it. Its also going down to 2 band because I hate stacked knobs for starters and also I loved the 2 band on my old musicman so much. Its a great bass for modding and fiddling with. I am going for a kinda Alleva Coppolo look on a budget. Some of the chaps on talkbass have these and wipe the names off them as they are ashamed for some reason. I fly the flag high, Squier are producing fantastic instruments at the moment and many of them out perform the new fenders, certainly some of the new MIM. I know what you mean with the 4/1 headstock too, so much prettier than the 5 in a row fenders. Hoping to pick up some secondhand hipshots to go on mine though as it is a heavy bass. Good luck though and if you get one and add the guard and bell plate let us all know, i personally would love to see it.
16. I remember playing one of those Jazz 24 V basses when they first came out and to be honest I didnt really like it. It just felt quite poorly made for the money and I couldnt get along with the EQ, it just didnt seem to do much. I am not sure whether this was just a one off dud (two fenders are never the same as we know) or if they were all much the same but it just felt a bit nasty. One thing I will say though, I picked up a Squier Deluxe Jazz 5 in black for £150. It doesnt have teh 24 frets but i would seriously reccomend having a try. Mine has absoluteley amazing build quality. The neck pocket is one of the tightest and best fitting I have ever seen, the fretwork is amazing and the neck is a really pretty piece of maple, unbelievable for a cheap bass. of course some of teh parts are not too hot, but I put a badass V on it and am having a Aguilar OBP-2 installed and its just superb, perfect modding project. I have only spent £80 on the preamp and bridge so its still well under fender prices. Anyway happy hunting.
17. thanks for those links especially the concert, that was amazing, watched the whole thing! I have been lusting over Alleva for a long time now and desperately want one even if its the no frills model. I suppose there is probably not a lot o difference between one of these and any other boutique jazz but I just think they are by far the prettiest and I love the headstock. I would love to get down to the bass merchant and try one.
18. Hello Thanks to everyone so far for the names of the venues. I am in the process of getting a spreadsheet together (sad I know) with potential venues contacts etc so this has been really helpful. Just out of interest, how does everyone go about getting gigs in these venues? I am thinking about getting a small pack with CD contact card, flyer and letter together to send to all of them, then follow up with a call a week later. Anyone done anything similar? am I going too far? Also if anyone is reading this and interested in setting some gigs up together, or if anyone has any gigs coming up and needs support please send me a PM or visit www.myspace.com/spiritualmachinesmusic and add us as a friend or send us a message. thanks again. Nathan
19. Really interested, cant wait to see those pictures. Nathan
20.
Start saving for a 35" scale bass.
I dont think thats always the answer, I play a 34" scale fender with Bb low and its awesome. Some folk even use 33" scale with low B with no problems. I would say try some different strings and get a really good set up. I dont have a super low on the frets set up as i like to dig in and find that helps (might just be me) and use Ernieball Extra Slinky 5s which work well for me. As previously said your amp is a big part of it as well, make sure you have a speaker that will handle the frequency and plenty of power, no good using a 30watt practice amp with a Low B.
21.
I'll send you a PM for a guy in Glastonbury that might well be interested. Jon
Thats great, i will be seeing the band at the weekend and will give this chap a call or email.
I expect you know about Riffs Bar near Swindon, they do "Half hour sessions" pretty frequently, to showcase unsigned bands, could be right up your street. You could also try the 12 Bar, also in Swindon
Didnt know about these venues (only just starting to look around) but thanks for the links, and it will mean I dont have to travel too far. Big help, cheers.
Hey man We are trying to do a similar thing from the north west/manchester area. Once you get your own night up and running, then we could do a gig swap if you want; you support us here we support you there kind of thing. Let us know http://www.myspace.com/wearehsoshin Cheers Alan
Alan, sounds good, we are looking at getting our first night within the next month hopefully. Once we have one sorted and we can check venues etc i will definately be in touch about getting some swapping going. The venues we have scoped in Cardiff so far are well equipped so we should hopefully be able to get a good night going. Will be in touch soon hopefully. Cheers all, Nathan
22. Hello, My current band did our first gig last night after months of practice and now we are really trying to get as much going musically as possible. We play Rock/Pop/Riff Rock i suppose, a bit foo fighter meets stone temple pilots. I am putting out a feeler to find venues that support originals bands around Cardiff/Bristol/Bath/Cheltenham/Gloucestershire and also make some contacts with bands in these areas. We are looking for support slot gigs with bands as well as looking at setting up nights of our own with a few other bands. We have already started to talk to MusicBox studio in Cardiff who are interested in getting something up and running in Cardiff but looking to do something a bit wider afield as well. You dont have to play metal or rock, the idea of the Cardiff night would be to show off a mixture of styles and show the range of bands. If you can help with venue names or if you are interesting in making contacts in other areas please get in touch or post a reply. You can also go to my MySpace and message through there and do some social networking as well: www.myspace.com/spiritualmachinesmusic Thanks, Nathan
