1. Yes you're right. Sorry. I think I worded my post badly.
2.
On a slight tangent, I am slightly uncomfortable with the OP's implication that one style of music is superior to another.
Dear god, not my point at all, more based on high profile players of posh basses tend towards a certain style of music and imagine people who aspire to such instruments aspire to such styles of music. <edit>and it sure as hell isn't any particular style of music I'm being critical of, but the lack of biodiversity of styles</edit>
3.
Original recording of Mustang Sally was probably cut using Pre CBS Fenders by the way
Nice! But I'm kind of my post in reverse inasmuch as I, despite being a Precision owner and advocate, want to play sophisticated music with it, can find no opportunity so to do, but assume that the level of sophisticated bass ownership suggests others feel the same but are more successful at having suitable outlets to express themselves.
4. Looking at the For Sale ads on this website, there appear to be a lot of people with beautiful high end basses. Looking at the Musicians Wanted ads elsewhere (and posters in pubs), the only bassing requirement in the country is Mustang Sally/Sweet Home Alabama/Money For Nothing lame tired covers. Surely noone buys a £2k bass to play Crazy Little Thing Called Love for the rest of their lives? Note: this post isn't a criticism of owners of expensive basses (or their instruments), it's a question re how on earth (or whether) your average bass-player-in-the-street finds opportunities to play contemporary jazz fusion, experimental post-rock, or other quirky characterful intelligent music which seems worthy of such instruments. Because the idea of playing Sweet Home Chicago ever again fills me with nausea and sadness.
5. I am a bear of very little brain and long words bother me. Which in this case means I shunned posh active basses in favour of a Precision (despite a larger budget) because it only had 1 too many knobs and switches instead of 5. Can't comprehend the faffing required with multiple options. Now I like the design of Stratocasters, and their sound in the right hands, but am put off getting one myself because there are 5 pickup combos to choose from (reckon an LP Jr more my thing). But really, how many people use all 5 "day to day"? Surely one has a couple of faves and the rest is just redundant complication? So out of interest I've tried to add a poll to this post. Jaguar/Jazzmaster users feel free to comment! Those are way too scary to contemplate.
6. My cheap jazz guitar has cheap humbuckers and I'm thinking of getting some cheap Warman P90 alikes to hopefully get more clarity. But I've remembered I have a cheap hot rails single coil sized pickup in the house. If I got a mounting ring adapter for it and put it in the bridge position, would it be any brighter? Or just another lame humbucker? Yes yes buy a Tele etc etc...
7. I have disappointingly found it impossible to find anything other than 42 or 43mm necks at a reasonable price. And have looked hard. Which is why I ended up with a 48mm http://www.alangregory.co.uk/music/Ozark_3513_Jazz_Guitar-_D_Soundhole.html and put a pickup in it. A joy of a neck. I have however recently tracked down these http://jam2day.co.uk/pages/big-lou-wide-nut-guitars and might have to take a punt. Also this guy is selling some 7-string-neck-on-a-6-string-guitar projects http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wide-neck-guitar-with-HB-tele-pups-a-custom-Shine-Saein-conversion-/191640936012.
8. See the good thing about that answer is I could take out the neck pickup from a cheap Tele and install an Esquire scratchplate...
9. New bass player* is the plan, yes. And I agree re space... but apparently the Foo Fighters manage it (dunno if some doubling up going on there). I'm quite excited at the prospect of playing guitar for a change so need to give the idea a fair crack of the whip tho. *Hmm. Getting an octave pedal and playing simple and sympathetic monophonic lines might be an option?
10. A shaggy dog story of a question, apologies. My old band intends to resurrect itself in a noisier format with Foo Fighters/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden as a template. Despite me being the bass player before, in order to do more sophisticated guitar stuff they want me to move to co-lead 6 string. This requires me to squeeze into a sound featuring the singer knocking out cowboy chords on a Tele and a tasty lead player on his 335. Now, although I've had various electric guitars around for decades, I haven't played one in a band for 30 years... as all that time I've been Precision bassing, which means my amp/guitar tweaking skills are limited. My current guitar is a cheapish hollow body jazz. And I can't really hear it properly when we rehearse. This could be

insufficient amp (a 30W 1x12 turned up competing with 100W stacks turned down)
incorrect amp placement wrt where my ears are compared to others
insufficient EQ faffing knowledge
muddy pickups which you only notice when playing with others
simply the fact that your average humbucker might struggle to find sonic space in 3-guitar overload
too much distortion (but I need the sustain and rockiness). Given it feeds back like mad of course, I probably should turn down the gain anyway spoiling the fun.
something else I haven't thought about
all the above
As said, I'm historically a Precision player, and I keep thinking about swapping my jazz guitar for a nice simple 1 x P90 alternative. This would cut down the relentless and fruitless tone faffing I'm doing, hopefully give me more clarity and a place in the overall sound without loss of grunt (and *with* loss of feedback). Why I'm dithering: I love having a big bodied guitar to rest my arm on, dead dead comfy; I could just be carried away with the thrill of new guitar shopping and throwing money away on a new instrument when there are alternative solutions; and ultimately the whole enterprise might prove to be a stupid idea and really we should stick to 2x guitar and I return to bass. Well there you go. All comments welcome!
11. Excellent, thanks! And of course I feel duty bound to use GuitarChat as my primary guitar-answer-finding resource.
12. Despite being a bassist, I'm looking for a good guitard-related forum based in the UK, and d@mned if I can find one. Anyone heard tell of such a thing?
13. £75 posted? Not sure the Chancellor will approve any purchase order request (after I've just made a fuss to get a King Crim £££ ticket buy) but you never know.
14. When people include a "trade" price, I assume they mean "interested in trades"? As I have a lovely Ibanez AF55 jazz guitar I need to swap.
15. Well, the idea is cherryburst with pearly scratchy and most importantly body binding. Has to have that U-shaped neck profile though, you'll just have to take my word for it that it's there.
16. Well this is all good if I don't need to lug amp coz can walk/public transport and have lots of ale. Tho I still have the dilemma of whether P-bass with flats will sound wrong avec drumless acoustic guitar, and using ABG for counterpoint work better. [How is your 5 string Harley Fray Bentos acoustic, Mr Goblin? Coz I'm wondering if it will be easier to justify a whole new bass if either fretlessness or 5 stringedness comes into play, as I have neither currently.]
17. So you reck it's a choice between a cheap DI pedal or an extra bass? Hmm...
18. I hope nobody buys this before the wife has made a decision on whether I need it http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230826-open-mic-hardware/
19. Just hooked up with guy who wants to do some git/vox/bass songs for open-mic purposes. What's the general amp requirement and availability and stuff for bass at such shindigs? People expect you to bring own amp, or do they usually have their own, do they prefer to DI, does the whole idea catch some organisers by surprise etc? I'm musing on getting an acoustic bass, which I know needs plugging in just as much as a lecky one, but I wondered if there's something better or easier about them in charge dealing sonically with 2 acoustic gits etc. I also wonder whether clangy acoustic basses somehow blend or cut through better with acoustic guitar compared to the round boom of electric - and doesn't just sound like the drummist hasn't showed up. What are people's experiences of this?
20. I was in the market for a new bass, tried loads of classy ones c. £1500, and walked out of a shop with one of these because it was The Best. Neck profile superb. I've put a pearloid scratchie on mine coz I find the 1-ply looks a bit cheap though.
Here's my Mike Dirnt signature: I don't play it much nowadays, but it was the first "proper" bass I bought new, so it's staying.
21. Your stuff is absolutely superb, but I'm not convinced my bass playing is up to the mark. In fact the more I listen to the Bandcamp tracks the more I like it and the more inadequate I feel [I'm going to try and play along with some of those pieces but I doubt I've got the dexterity and brain power to do them justice. Will email you if I think I can contribute.] What's the aim of the project? To make a living, tour the world, just for fun, just for recording etc? Keep me in the loop as I'd love to hear/see it in performance. Really exciting music. Andrew.
22. I've seen a few VERY cheap ABGs on eBay (sub £100), which I'm tempted by as my budget for one is £150. I'm not bothered about volume or cosmetics, I just want to be convinced they won't fall to pieces and have the bridge pulled off for example. Any knowledge thereof? Brands like Cheetah, Swift, Gear4Music, Lindo etc.
23. Smashing. Might get back to you if I get any dosh from my current sales.
