In truth ...... I didnt like it. It sounded amazing on it's own- unlike any other bass. But in the mix ...... it just didnt work. No punch, no character. The only way I could get it to give a half decent sound was with what I considered the worst tone I could get out of it when solo'd.

The bass i have now has passive and active options, so I'm lucky.

The L2000 has passive and active options...you didn't like either mode?

    Hi all,

I have an active bass and made the mistake of going down the youtube rabbit hole regarding active basses...... bad mistake :)

anywho, I've had active basses before (a sire v7 v2 and a g&l l2000 usa) and I just assumed the bass was the bass and that was it and most of the sound is the pickups. Now I've seen people saying change/upgrade your preamp and itll bring your pickups to life!

    So, my questions are:

Does the preamp really change the characteristics of your bass?

    Is it worth doing?

What preamps would work well with a pj with dimarzio pickups in?

    thanks in advance.

    You should've kept the L2000.

Active and passive, no need to change the pickups...they might be the best stock pickups made.

It's a great price if they look as good as the one in the pics but weren't these the ones with horrendously mis-matched woods underneath that showed through the translucent paint?

I think I saw they had the 2-burst jazz on sale too which I did fancy!

I think I saw two bad examples...and I've seen another two in person that looked fine.

Possibilities do exist, of course, among both Squier and Fender.

Bassist from Freddie and the Dreamers used one too (probably the most untypical performance with a Thunderbird you'll ever see):

    Thanks for reminding me.

Watched it just a few weeks ago and didn't remember.

Ok I really like PBass for rock and I’m always looking at alternatives but don’t know where to start

I tried a Stingray ( Sterling ) and I just didn’t like the sound although for years before I gigged a EB Stingray with my SVT rig and loved it !

So suggest a bass ( circa £1000 max) that is great for rock that isn’t a PBass or a Stingray

Ive never tried a Jazz bass with the band so I’m undecided about that as an option

Quite a few good basses, but you don't want good, you want great, right?

    Dare to be different!

Reverend Thundergun, one of the best-kept secrets in the bass world...it's a super P bass.
