  1. long story short version bought a ray 35 from dv247 in january had it a couple of weeks noticed some buzzing had a play with setting it up went great but the buzzing kept coming back .
i then took it to a local guitar shop who had a fiddle and handed it back to me with the warning keep an eye on that neck :( a few days later the buzzing returned like a bad movie sequal, took the bass back to dv247 telling them theres an issue with the neck.
was handed back the bass 5 days later buzzing worse than ever ! i mentioned it was worse than before and asked WTF did you do to it, the reply of i set it up exactly the same as that one over there forced me to storm out of the shop.
contacted strings and things who agreed to collect it from dv247 and check it out turns out the neck was buggered had it back in a few days after dv247 had done a set up on the new neck ......
wasnt great but wasnt terrible, had the time today to take it somewhere decent for a set up :) (half the screws in the tuners are on the piss and threaded also)

heres some of the guys notes on work carried out today

This is as good as it gets. frets were leveled nut cut truss rod and action set. theres is a rattle at top end of fretboard caused by relief at bottom end to allow 5th string to play, but i think its the best compromise.
for a new neck the frets were VERY uneven.

ive messed about setting this bass up myself and the action just wont go low without rattles the action still is not low but it plays a lot better after being set up today

    so question is

should i send it back to strings and things to sort machine head screws out

and who should pay for the fret leveling ?

should i accept as good as it gets and compromise ? i know its only a 700 pound bass but still i feel it should be better

  2. there was an offer a few pages back where a member offered to have a look and tweak on this bass take up that offer or pay someone to do a set up
you dont seem confident in making the adjustments yourself and your not alone there, im not sure how you can label a bass crap ive played some bad ones but there still playable i even still own a couple of them :)

EDIT when was the last time you changed the strings in the 10 years you have owned the bass ?

the neck width will certainly be less of an issue if i can sort out the e string. but i don't know where to start with the volume issue.

could be a mix of different brand/gauge strings or pick up height

  4. dont see many of these

New other (see details): A new, unused item with absolutely no signs of wear. The item may be missing its original packaging, or the original packaging has been opened or is no longer sealed. The item may be a factory second, or a new and unused item with minor defects. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections.

no way i could have had a bass around for 31 years and not played it he deserves the buy it now price just for will power :P

Is it only when you're using effects? It's very weird that you're getting delays at the lowest settings.

The USB interfaces I use have negligable latency at their fastest setting, but I always ran into clicks and pops eventually. I use Cubase myself so hopefully an Ableton user will turn up soon. In Cubase there is an option to choose your ASIO driver - does Ableton have a similar option? If so then I would make sure that it's using the right driver rather than a generic one.

If you're still having trouble try using the ASIO4All driver.

yup only using effects the recording has little or no latency but the sound from the monitors does while recording not much but you hear it while monitoring
definatly got the right asio driver in ableton tried asio4all a few months back and it was much worse
maybe the live 8 effects are just a bit too resource hungry might have to switch back to cubase :)

  6. nice one not seen that software before all green for me re built windows only a few days ago so the pc is running very fast
the lexicon asio drivers only have a slider low latency at one end and stability at the other my slider is right over to low latency no clicks or pops or crashes freezes just this latency when using abletons effects and monitoring

  7. been using a lexicon lambda connected to a quad core pc tonnes of ram etc but i still get latency if i monitor say a guitar with an effect added into ableton live, not huge but still noticable
is there anyway round this ? tried new drivers and messing round with the latency correction and just lately stuck a SSD in the pc as the last hard drive was slooooow
monitoring direct from the sound card works great for me but you know what guitarists are like they want all the swishy cranky sounds but never think to bring a pedal ...

Nothing kills groove quicker than technicality. And if you can't feel the groove, you ain't grooving. Reggae bass lines are so simple, and dead easy to play, but there's an invisible line between giving someone the uncontrollable urge to dance, and pissing them right off. Groove is the same. It's a kind of magic.

Work on getting ONE note to groove, use space and accent to make that one note groove. Set up the simplest, mid tempo, Boom Tish Boom Tish drum pattern, see if you can make that one note groove. When you can, and you're getting excited by it, do something with that one note that stops it grooving. Switch between the two and try to work out what it is that causes that those feelings. Then add little things to your grooves, build it slowly. Feel it.

Forget all that technical sh*t for now, it will teach you everything about technique and nothing about playing bass. If you want to groove, leave your ego in the bedroom.

    yup awesome advice :)

  9. i have noticed something else since changing out the roto's
i had recently learnt some new songs and was playing them along with the utube vids but always sounded slightly out of tune to them i put it down to the encoding of youtube, but now with new strings im in tune with the same clips !
im thinking i had a duff set or maybe just a string rotosounds had always felt rougher but i dont remember them being that rough and definatly not had tuning issues before
that said the roughness and the sudden death of the twang is enough to put me off for a while

Slow it down until you can play it, but make sure that you're still tight with the rhythm at the slower speed. Play it for 10 minutes or so until you're comfortable. Then go off and do something else for a couple of hours. Come back and try it a bit faster for another 10 minutes. Take another break. Repeat until your can play it perfectly at the correct speed. Works for me!

works for me but sometimes i have to have to just walk away from completely for a day or 2
