Play your exercises (and even songs..!) on the part of the neck you're happy with, and gradually move down (or is that 'up'..?). You'll find it to be easier over time (perhaps one fret down every couple of weeks or so..?). Don't strain yourself to play where it's too uncomfortable (ever..?). Patience; it's the first 40 years or so that are the worst, after which things get (slightly...) better.
Hope this helps; subject to correction and contradiction from others...

sounds good to me you would also be playing your stuff on different parts of the neck as you progress so fretboard knowledge should come at the same time -
i have had wall hangers in rented property and shelves too ! the longer your there the more holes they expect
ps you dont have enough gear if you have room for the wife and carpet -
i missed the announcement about fees
but i do notice a lot people shift quite a bit of gear on here so if your one of them £20 a year is nothing and the £7 one off isnt too steep i guess
would rather the fees than tonnes of adverts and pop ups all over the place -
ibanez sr are light and small but .. bought my daughter a sterling sub last year and it weighs nothing well worth checking out too

im learning now been on it a few months im reading with a bit of a stutter but hopefully ill get there one day -
i just remembered my first ever bass lesson 12 years after picking up the bass i was asked do you read dots ? i replied no
ok we shall do it in tab ! but im putting the legs on top so you can see the rhythm
i still just listened to the song for it wish i had spent more time on reading skills -
not asked for tabs on youtube comments but have asked a couple of times on here for tabs or dots, both times they were easy songs and all i needed was the chords the rest just fell into place
my ears dont find chords to a song easy at all once i have the chords (or some of them) i can figure it out
cant beat a youtube clip if im having trouble with a rhythm or a full transcription even though i spend about 10 minutes writing the note under the dot -

found this today while looking for the chords for womack and womack teardrops its awesome for a lazy tonedeaf person like me
http://chordify.net/ just stick in a youtube or soundcloud link and hey presto ! only tried 2 songs myself one i knew and one i didnt its seems spot on -

her indoors and the daughter are stood at the counter doing something that did not involve me getting a new bass in that clip -
i tried to many years ago and failed split from band fell out with the guitarist/songwriter, given up hope but still love playing probably clock up 3 hours a night on average.
so its a no for me would love to but family bills and all that mean no career change for me
Edit just realised the question was aimed at younger members lol wish i could claim to be part of that group still -
ive had dubstar not so manic now going round my head for about a week >.< could be worse i guess

i dont know what the fuss was about with sid, but some seem to love him
-
is it just the plugs in where other pots should be ? or am i missing something
-
hopefully they will sort you with a new neck at reduced cost but that would be above and beyond what they have to do
if they dont get a graphite if its cheaper -
lets be thankfull there are no 5 to 4 string bass conversions for sale here from a certain individual who trades on ebay

If I'd made this decision after spending all that dough on gear, I'd feel the need to tell someone.

think that sums up the point to the thread -
i love playing along to cd's ! although my daughter tells me that its not a cd on youtube but an mp3 >.<
haven't played in a band for ... about 17 years and why the hell would i ? i dont have the time or the patience to put up with singers etc, i put the song on and play !
but if you want to quit and sell up do so, but you will always fancy a noodle on a bass in the future so keep your fave ! you may regret it -
not meaning to revive an old debate, but i would rather play for free than play for free while lining some promoters pockets.
