Nah I've had it recently, your one o the guys with small hands like me! The way I see it, there not that many different tones to bass - Jazz, Precision, MM, Rickenbacker or Hi-Fi (status). Then you have your 4,5 and 6 strings. Then effects. Then amps. Its best I feel to buy a good amp (£1200 tops) a 24 fret hifi soapbar four string such as the Cort A4 which is extremely well built and comfortable to play and get one of those Roland V-99 which pitch shifts - turning a standard tuned bass to eb by the click of a button. The V-99 also imitates and combines effects including jazz, precision tones etc. Thats my assessment, coming from a guy with the same problem as you...but just spent 1k on a masterbuilt guitar...

I don't believe it...I literally spent a grand on ebay last night, would've loved this AND its rosewood fingerboard. Noooooooooooooooo!!!
-
I've heard they're equally as good as the fender custom shop 55, a mate of mine tried both and said there really wasn't a lot in it, just change the pickup. Pretty appauling when you consider the CS was £2000+ new!! Value for money with the '51 used or new. I'll have one some day...
-
...they're less than that new. A fine bass regardless.

Stingray + fingers.

This is the same finish as my Cirrus played by a poor ole chap whose in need of setup methinks. Never heard the song before...

Vigier basses have to be near the best in the world, tone and playability wise their up there.

Thanks for the advice guys!
After reading Beedster's blog on doublebass, I do feel I'm gently going that way already. G&L's are kind of a super precision - plus I've fitted it with flats also, the only thing missing is it having a fretless jazz neck and it would be perfect. Some sort of fretless is still on the cards I feel
I was also tempted by Clarky's '76P but I know i'll have difficulty getting my small hands round it - an upright maybe more difficult still but the vertical aspect plays better as I can bring my arm across. I love the tone and would definately revert to the old Jack Bruce stuff but the size/price worries me a little as I wouldn't know which to buy, i'm not sure I'd like a EUB.
Bubinga5, I think the reason I'm playing my sister keyboard is for a different approach to scales, feels so different when your looking at the notes from a birdseye point of view, doesn't have the same aggressive personality of a bass which just makes me wanna synth like George Duke lol. I'm also going with the new band approach, i think its time!
I liked Happy Jack's idea to just get stuck in, I worked my way through Black Sabbath's NIB and Jethro Tull's Bouree and then followed it with The Cure - a band I rarely listen to! I just think I get so caught up in GAS for everything over the years I forgot all the magic I made on my first bass an (Overwater setup) Fretless Cort A4
I've got some thinking to do! Thanks again! -
I'm starting to get bored of bass guitar at current due to my playing being in a rut, I procrastinate by reaching for my guitar or hogging my sisters keyboard. I'm on the edge of switching, however i've worked up enough cash to either:
Buy a guitar amp and switch back and forth
Buy a Roland VB-99 as my effects unit and try something new
Buy a fretless bass (which I hugely enjoy!) and use it as my main bass
Go all in and buy a really high end bass (£1k+)
Sell my G&L L2000 as well as my Cirrus and buy a Fender/Lakland P and J bass
Sell my G&L plus Cirrus plus rig and go to guitar or keyboard full time...or quit completely, which is the cowardly thing to do!
Any advice appreciated, I have a great setup already although I lack effects and have little/no experience with them. -
Wish mine tribby had a jazz neck, although the stingray-like neck is very comfy its only medium speed I guess. G&L every time...

Ok, £765 posted following price drop. Don't really want to drop lower as I had to import it from the US. A very solid workhorse made very versatile courtesy of its EQ - Like a Kubicki of better build.
I can understand why people might be put off by the price, but I have seen these for £1580 ish if that's any help!
I would like one very much, could you tell me where you found that please? Or is it secret?? I'm looking to shift my Cirrus for one -
I had a Tokai P bass and Jazz before, both great value for money. Good build, I had no problems with the hardware but the pickups need changing.

Show it off to your mates lads!....show it off to your mates...

Don't know how else to sell it to you, its one of those secret gems like the old G&L tributes, Cort A4/5/6 or the 70's Tokais - or the not so secret Squier Vibe series.
Except in this case I've heard gospel players liken them to the early Tobias basses. -
I love the burst, so glad theres no scratchplate to ruin it!
I got a cracking sound from this;
Warwick Infinity SN4 (elixir strings) > Hartke HA3500 > Hartke 4.5 XL
Warwick and Hartke I know is a good combo . Just like BurritoBass' Fender P and Ampeg - a classic! -
G&L L2000 + Genz Benz 750 + Genz Benz Neo 2x12.
Match made in Heaven - pedals only ruin it for me -
Theres a bargain! Theres literally no love for Jackson/Charvel gear on this site, tis shocking. Great build quality, must be the unorthodox shapes. I love Kip Winger and all the Glam Rock/Hair Metal that went with him.

The 35" scale is great for the pick bass player, I've never used a plectrum before because I couldn't get on with it - but the extra tension helps significantly!
Hi Oli,
I'm intrigued , "Roland V-99 which pitch shifts - turning a standard tuned bass to eb by the click of a button. The V-99 also imitates and combines effects including jazz, precision tones etc.", is it a sort of TC-Helicon VoiceLive for Bass?
The idea of dropping to a B tuning at the push of a button has got my GAS going again .
What did you have masterbuilt? (Who, What (Pic's), Where and how are you finding it?)
Oggy
Hi Oggy,
Yeah, check it out on youtube - its a £1k though the full package!! I'm not a fan of B strings so it would be ideal for me, it can imitate piano and you can imitate a guitar with your bass played underneath it together. Also has a D-beam (Jimmy Page!) Its pretty mental, I've always had a good experience with Roland too.
I bought 1/20 Masterbuilt Charvel Star based on the late 70's models with the Ziggy Stardust-esque bolt graphic, getting it shipped from the US. The guys from Fender paid Grover Jackson and his 4 employees from the Charvel workshop to come back and masterbuild 100 of their old models. Its my one six string weakness, anything 70's,80's glam rock always proves too much. The look is an acquired taste but the tone and playability is second to none! Instant Van Halen, WASP, Ratt, Europe, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister - you name it...the Roland will have to wait a lil longer...

Genz Benz Rig, Cort A4, Roland VB-99 will be my eventual 'final' setup. I also think the Fender Urge II would be a good buy for us, I felt the short scale coulda done with a little more and the 34" a little less, that said I do really like the tension of a 35" scale - this is going nowhere isn't it? I'll shut up now.
