1. I've been out of bass playing for a while now, as I switched to guitars around 4 years ago.

I wanted to ask what you feel the best quality bass is between £600 and £900? Used to get all sorts for £650.

The reason I ask is because every time I spot something that I feel is a good deal, I see something a lot better for £100 extra...So my radar's out of touch.

I had a Marleaux Consat and a Bravewood Precision before I changed and I was very happy with these, but I couldn't get a band together at the time.

    So what's out there nowadays??

    (All input appreciated)

  2. I've owned 7 instruments at once, but now I currently have 2 and would like to make it 3.

I've cut back opting for quality and I'm happier now that I can't pick out issues, or things that need upgraded etc and I get on with my playing.

You can try and get lucky with the budget thing, or blow £2k+, but I think that £1.5k mark is as good as it gets from a practical point of view - 1 or 2 of those and you're set for life.

  3. Today I increased my collection from 1 to 2 guitars! The G&L did everything anyway, but I used 'alternate tunings' as a way to justify the Yamaha...

  4. And a badass he was too - I have a signed painting of him.

Saw his final tour and although he couldn't solo very well, his vocals were spot on! (Strange)

Always had a soft spot for these; I think you should keep it for £175!! That's nothing for such an unusual bass.

  5. I've only played the 4001 model and I loved the sound and everyone said I look cool as f**k, but it felt strange playing strings that were almost parallel to eachother. I could've gotten used to it until I played an absolute monster of a Kubicki.

That said, I miss the 4001 more than the Kubicki...

  6. I thought the exact same as the OP and then I picked up one of those cheap Sue Ryder P Basses from a few years back and WOW!! I loved my high performance basses until then, from the Cort A Series to the Marleaux Consat. I don't feel a P can do 'everything', as it can lack that punch at times, but it's definitely a staple to partner with something like a Jazz (or that Marleaux Consat I mentioned :gas: ).

Now...a black Strat, rosewood board, chrome Floyd...yes please!

It is bizarre that you can't buy a Fender American Stratocaster w/ Floyd Rose

Interested to hear about Kahlers, as that's another one that gets a bad rep...

  8. So my friend gave me his Guitar to set up, which has a Floyd Rose Bridge (German Original Model)...

I've owned 4 Floyd Rose Guitars in the past, but this is the first time I've had to set one up from scratch.

After reading all the hate on the forums etc, I prepared myself for the worst and after using the following methods:

    https://www.youtube....h?v=5W8GkhvZMp4

    https://www.youtube....h?v=V_nOYkRed3I

    https://www.youtube....h?v=4uPvABrN7sA

I was surprised to find that it set up like pretty much any other Tremolo Bridge and probably took me the same amount of time.

The only inconvenience with Double Locking Tremolos is the need for Allen Keys (x2), although I have seen brackets to hold them on the back of the headstock.

I've come to the conclusion that the main benefit is managing to get through a solo without the string binding at the nut.

The extra tuning time cancels itself out, because you rarely have to fine tune thereafter.

Can't help but wonder why they get such a bad reputation, it's a nice bit of kit!

    Bigsbys on the other hand...

  9. When playing alone, I find Guitar much more interesting to play than Bass, which is why I bought mine.

They all say it's never too late to start learning and I would agree, because it's satisfying to noodle throughout the week.

There's tonnes of resources to look to, such as Lick Library, JustinGuitar, Rockschool etc etc

I would go for a Yamaha Pacifica if you're buying online, as they're very consistent with their Q/C and I've never played a bad one.

You can get an Alder Body version for £165:
