1.
I was in town only the other day, thinking to myself, "Ah, the summer brings 'em out, doesn't it...?" Anyway, back to the basses... Love your Status S2 (obviously!) - It has a really interesting top wood - What is it? Any idea? The other one that really caught my eye was the MM with the lovely figured maple top. Fantastic looking bass! How well does your 75RI jazz do the Miller sound, then? Congrats on a fab collection
Cheers mate! The Status I think is cocobolo on a cherry core. There's an interesting green "stripe" that runs between the two woods that I haven't seen on other Stattii. I'll try an get a close up of it later. The MM is an awesome bass - I bought it from BassBalls on here earlier this year. It's got a fantastic neck and just oozes character. I've always blown hot and cold on the Status. After playing the MM extensively the Status sounds clinical and sterile, but it's a great bass for improving technique on so I practice on it a lot and get back into it. I used to have a Series 2000 in the late 80s which I forever regret selling. The Jazz is getting there - I also bought that from a Basschatter. I really don't like the pick-ups on it that much so it's going to have a Nordstrand update soon. There's a killer bass in there - I've just had to strip out all the rubbish bits. My amp at the moment is a Phil Jones Flightcase and while it's good, I don't think I'm hearing the best of what any of them have to offer. I'm getting a GB Shuttle soon and then I'll be on the hunt for a Bergantino or Epifani 2x10.
 2. I've got a bit of a thing for the "natural" look Left to right: 1989 Status Series II; 1992 EBMM Stingray; Fender Jazz CIJ '75RI with Marcus Retro and Gotoh bridge; 1977 Fender USA Precision.
 3. It reminds me of the star shaped bass that Bootsy Collins has. Only Bootsy's bass has character and is strangely good looking next to this howler. It isn't a late April Fool's joke that they forgot to take down from the web site?

 5. Hi, Has anyone used/is using their EBS Valve Drive with a T-Rex Fuel Tank Classic as a power supply? Does the Fuel Tank provide enough power to the Valve Drive? The Valve Drive requires 12V AC 500mA but the wall-wart that EBS supplies it with provides 1000mA. The Fuel Tank Classic provides 12V AC 500mA. I'm not so up on electrical issues. Is just enough, enough? Or does the Valve Drive benefit from the beefier power supply? Thanks, Derrick
 6.
I've been reading some of the older threads about Ear protection and i think it's a real important subject that should always be in our minds so i thought i'd start yet another (but on a slightly different note) I've been in battle with my ER20's for a long time now. i need to be using them because i'm only young and i enjoy music production just as much as live playing and for that i really need my ears. The ER20's are very good and take the level of everything down but keep it all level and clear. But.... While i have them in the bass seams louder. I understand about head room but this thought of the bass being too loud roll's around in my head while we play and it distracts me from listening to what everyone else is playing and prevents me from relaxing into the groove. So normally half way through a jam i'll stop and be throwing them aside in frustration. Does anyone else find this sort of thing while using ear plugs? Or am i just weird? P.S. I did think that maybe it's the protection that i'm using that might be the problem. I've seen on , music radar , some custom hearing protection but they are a little expensive.
I'm a saxophone player first and foremost and I have a similar problem with earplugs. With them in, I hear my sound through the bones in my head more than my sound traveling through air to my ears, and it makes my own sound even louder and unpleasant. I hate playing with earplugs - it changes the way I hear and the the way I play, but it's very necessary with some of the bands I work with. I've never tried using the earplugs with bass yet as I don't gig on bass that much. As it's an amp making all the noise and not your physical self I'm surprised - I'll try it myself and see if I notice the same thing. I'm just about to get a pair of those ACS earplugs. They work but reducing the db level rather than blocking out sound. Other horn players I know who have them speak highly of them. I'll post back when I've receive them and have gigged with them and let you know what I think. They take about a month to be made so it wont be until the end of May. After trying everything else (including the obvious one of trying to get the band to play quieter) I thought I'd give them ago after I got thinking about all the (tens of) thousands of ££ I've spent on instruments and studio equipment over the years but only a few quid on protecting my ears.
 7. Lee's a top bloke. Sold me his Octabass pedal - nice to chat too. He even posted the pedal before my cheque had cleared - how cool is that!

 10.
I have J-Retro for one day and I can say I like it a lot! I bought used J-Retro Dlx. from guy from BassChat (thank you man) for my Marcus Miller's Fender. Now I have to make new plate or order Marcus-Retro, Is the Marcus-Retro different than J-Retro?...thanks W.
Wimpy, I've just installed a Marcus-Retro in my Fender Jazz. It's actually a J-Retro plate with the Marcus preamp that John East made to order for me and it is sweet. From John East's info the J-Retro has the following EQ: Treble: +12db@3kHz, -12db@1kHz Bright: +8db@7kHz Bass: +15db@50Hz Mid/Frequency: +/-12db 150Hz-3kHz The Marcus Retro has the following EQ: Treble: [email protected], -12db@1kHz Bright: +8db@7kHz Bass: +15db@40Hz Mid/Frequency: +/-12db 150Hz-3kHz I'm lovin' it right now.

 13.
i compliment your first on your great presentation and pictures and the neck panorama a brilliant idea details of how to use that site would be welcome your bass tempts me as it embodies all i have at present without the B string which i am going to dispense with and would like to continue with a well made good sounding bass...the stingray!! here is my link...wish it was sold so i could make you an offer regards geof manchester http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39305
Geof, The neck panorama!?! Oh! on the Flickr page.....I'd like to think I was really that clever - but sadly no. That's a happy accident. I took the pics sequentially and they just happened to go up on the fickr site that way. The flickr site - www.flickr.com is part of Yahoo and you have to register with Yahoo to upload pics. The site's pretty good at guiding you through all the steps but it does take a while the first time you do it. I think ImageEvent looks better but Flickr is the first picture hosting site I came across. Both are free to use I believe. PS. Your 5 string looks magnificent - I'm surprised nobody has snapped it up. I'd have it myself but I'm still working on the first four strings
 14. Hi, Up for sale is my EB Musicman Stingray. The serial number dates it to 2000. It's in natural ash, 3EQ, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. I've owned if for around two and a half years and in my time it's seen a few gigs but mostly practice. It's in almost mint condition with a four small dings on the back near the battery compartment. There's no bucklerash. Neck is perfect with a few minor scuffs on the very edges of the headstock. If you follow the link to my flickr page I've tried my best to show these. In truth though with the natural finish, these blemishes are hardly noticeable. Frets have virtually no wear and it's fitted with a set of DR Marcus Miller Fatbeams which are about a month old. It's been set-up by the bald-headed guy at The Gallery in Camden - sorry I can't remember his name. Collection from my home in South London is preferred, I can deliver in person to London/Surrey/Kent etc for the price of petrol. Delivery via courier also possible - I'm guessing that's going to cost around £25-30. The bass comes in a hefty and heavy flightcase. Lots of pics on the flickr page: http://flickr.com/photos/22652002@N08/sets...ith/3243787457/ Price dropped to £725 and going on Ebay this weekend. Have a look and please contact me if you have any questions. Thanks, Derrick
 15. Hi Rob, I put a set of "normal" strings on this last night and have been putting it through its paces today. This is an awesome bass! I can't believe you sold it. It's a keeper for me - the best MM I've ever had the pleasure with. Maybe if you were a disco man like me instead of a metalist you would have kept this and sold the Aerodyne instead. Thanks very much. Did I mention it's an awesome bass? Derrick
 16. What's the difference between Fender MIJ and CIJ? Is the CIJ reserved for reissues? Are CIJ instruments better built? Or is it just a marketing thing. Thanks, Derrick
 17.
Ummmmmmmmm - your crimes against bass are numerous and despicable! But we believe in redemption! - even for saxomophone players - Welcome
I am ready to be chastised and serve my penance.
 18.
sax eh? I just took an alto in part ex for some music gear I was moving on and its looking lovely sat in its case. I've wanted one for years but now I have one, havent a scoobie how to even get started. Would it be a waste of time trying to make some headway with videos, books etc on my own first? ie to avoid frustration should I try and sort out a tutor straight away? Are there any tuition books/CDs/videos you can recommend? and welcome. this place gives me a daily battle with myself, takes me all my time convincing myself I dont need another bass. congrats on the Stingray too. I've a Stingray 5 but the last month has seen my GAS for a black or sunburst Stingray 4 go through the roof.
Definitely get a tutor - you'll get so much more from a tutor even if it's just a mate showing you a few basics, than you can pick up from books and DVDs. The problem with most tutor books is that they're almost exclusively aimed at kids so will tell you a lot of what you already know (and in quite a childish way). DVDs tend to try to hard to give everyone something so can be of limited use whatever stage you are at. No, get a tutor and save the guesswork, frustration and risk of developing bad habits before you really get going. What make and model alto did you get? A decent mouthpiece is an absolute must as most mouthpieces supplied with saxes at any price point are rubbish. But what's right for you is a personal choice. Again a tutor can assess you and advise on what will work well for you.
 19.
Welcome on board. This really is a friendly place to hang out. There are no such thing as dumb questions. As you're a multi-instrumentalist you are more likely to be fielding questions from us.
A nice warm welcome..
 20. Hello All, I've been a lurker for a month or so and have signed up not just because of the wealth of knowledge and experience available here but because it seems a genuinely nice place to hang out. Hats off to you - all the other music forums I'm a member of (SOS, Motunation, Gearslutz) can really flame newbies just for being new and posts can quickly descend into a bunfight at a moment's notice. Basschatters - I salute you! About me: I'm a saxophone player. Actually sax, flute and clarinet. I used to play bass when I was a teenager but I gave it up when I decided to pursue the saxophone and try and be a pro musician. A year ago I returned to it after an 18 year absence purely for my own enjoyment and I've got the bug and GAS all over again. I'm really enjoying the instrument and so much more second time round. It makes me feel like I didn't quite waste all my youth. When I get more playing experience and tighter chops I would like to find a band or two. My bass crimes (Warning - painful reading): I have to get this off my chest - remember I was young, stupid and needed the money. When I was that dumb, young teenager I traded my 18 year old Fender P when Fender Ps were unfashionable for a Trace Elliot speaker cab. The year was 1988 making that bass a 1970. The cab was the 4052H bright box - not even a real speaker cab. A few years later, when Steinbergers were unfashionable I sold my mint Steinberger XL2 for £600. My Mk3/Mk4 Trace Elliot rig went in bits to various new owners (unfashionable again) but my most heinous crime for me was finally letting go of my mint Status Series 2000 - serial no #001. I think I got about £800 for it. My current rig and I'm trying to make amends: I bought the bass I always wanted - A Musicman Stingray I missed the Status so much I bought another - a late 80s Series II A Phil Jones Flightcase-150 and a Tascam Basstrainer Would love to have: A nice Japanese Fender Jazz or Sandberg California. That Vigier in classifieds Everything else - you all have some tasty basses. Enough for now - and thanks in advance when I start asking dumb, obvious questions. Derrick
