1.
Hi there! My name's Ed and I'm from Sheffield. I'm a classic-rocker at heart, but play everything up to melodic / epic metal. My current band is on the heavier metal side, but I've got an 80s rock side-project and am the occasional accompanist for my acoustic singer-songwriter friend's coffee-house gigs.

I've been a bassist for about 14 years now, and my weapon of choice is a good ol' 4 string Fender P-bass. I have a couple of nice MIAs that I record with, a couple of MIMs that I gig with, a Squier VM that I bought to put in BEAD tuning and my Kingman acoustic. If I can get away without backline I'm not afraid to just put my Sansamp RBI through the desk (and, for that matter, the fx-return of any other bass-amp I find when I arrive), but when it's necessary to take some power I use a MarkBass LMII or Orange Terror Bass 500 through a 1x15 neo cab.

Of course, I didn't just arrive at 'grown-up'.. it's taken years of buying everything from the sublime to the ridiculous, finding out it was lovely to behold but impossible to play / carry / tame for small venues etc. and then moving it on to the next guy entering the same phase before trying something new. I've always liked to read opinions on gear forums, but it's only now that I feel I might have put in enough miles to offer something worthwhile back... ultimately I'll let you be the judge of that ;-)
Welcome aboard buddy... Also in sunny Sheff myself!

  3.
If you ever want to drop by my stooodio and have a bit of help, i would be happy to. Dont mean to be patronising, i just know how boggling the hyperbass is when you first get it! I'll PM you my number
Thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on it, but I'll give it a while first Danny. I *think* it's the fact that it is *so* boggling that's thrown me.
Let me know when you have a gig again and I'll come through and chat with you. (No falling asleep and missing it this time.)

  4.
Well? What's it like then?
Hmmmm Difficult to answer.

It's absolutely amazing! Truly an awesome piece of work. However, it feels right now, like I bought an instrument *so* specifically intended for use as a Manring type multi tuning instrument that I may never really use it, other than as a "bedroom bass".

I *could* tune it to EAGD and file out the bridge and nut to accept normal gauge strings (rather than piccollo) but that would kinda make it a regular bass, and I already have multiple 4's 5's and 6's.
I'm not sure I have the raw talent to really make the best use of this bass in the role for which it's actually intended.

...Don't get me wrong, I've had a few hours on it now, and I'm enjoying the challenge.
Who knows I may actually be able to play a tune on it eventually. (Currently tuned Bb F Bb F ...and that ignores the complicated way the hipshots and the bridge tuners change that. For example one of the hipshots is tuned to be a Bb in the open position while the rest are tuned in closed position. So that one slides up to a higher note while the others drop.) Mindfeck!

I was naieve to think I would be able to easily use it as a regular (fretless) bass with the band.

Ask me again in 2 years and I'll probably have a better idea of how much I can't live without it...

  5.
Have fun Andy! welcome to the club dude :)
It arrived today (Friday 4th March.)

It an amazing piece of work. Tuly it is.

It's as different from a bass as a trombone is though... It's gonna take me a long time to get to know how to make it sing.

Not plugged it in an played it but I'll keep you posted on how I get on!

  6.
Bump.

I've added an 'in progress' photo that John took for me last year. It was taken just before the bass was reassembled.

I'll take some more photos tomorrow daytime, hopefully it'll be sunny. These photos are off the Jaydee website, but the bass is exactly the same.
want...

  7. Yeah I wanted the bass chat forums to have first chance at it as I'm making a terrible loss, which might be someone elses gain. I reckon it's actually worth about 10k as parts. I've already had a few offers on parts of it from squatjuice forums, but really wanted to shift the whole thing in one go

However thanks for the info. I shall consider putting it on there.... or maybe evil-bay. :)

  8.
To be perfectly honest, I'm still not absolutely sure that I'm doing the right thing here, but I'm employing the 'flip a coin, call and judge you decision by your reaction' type approach.

Make no mistake, this is a fantastic bass (hence my hesitant approach), but I'm just not using the 6th string and in truth, would probably like something a little more growly in the low end.

I'll try not to bore you with loads of blurb, so I've attached a pic that'll probably tell you most of what you need to know - Mahogony wings with Walnut tone block, bolt-on neck, gold hardware, lovely top which I think is a figured Walnut.... It's also absolutely MINT. Comes with Status hardcase

Only trades considered at the moment for something Warwick or similar, but they must be 5'ers I'm afraid. Might consider cash sale but only if there's something on the forum that takes my interest.

Get in touch if you have any interesting offers
PM'd you re a Thumb 5-string trade Nice pre bb-bat neck. :)

  9. This is a truly massive sounding, and fully pro rig.
    4 x Turbosound TFL-760H
    8 x Turbosound TSE-118
    1 x Powersoft 7000
    1 x Powersoft 5000
    1 x Powersoft 3002
    1 x Powersoft 2004
Also with brand new DBX Driverack 260 Digital EQ & Loudspeaker management system (Crossover)
and DBX Driverack "PA" Digital EQ & Management system. (Use both X-Overs to achieve 4 way stereo system)

Includes all the linking cables and Long speaker 4 way multicore,
and also a 24-4 way multicore (XLR boxes each end)
    16u Flightcase with castors

All speakers are the original Turbosound drivers and have been checked and any faulty/scratchy ones replaced/reconed.
The idea was to use it for my band, but the band split after just 3 gigs, and my fallback plan was to hire it out (It could be made to pay for itself quite quickly that way, just check out the cost of a PA of this calibre to rent, however, I'm just too lazy)

Looking for an offer of about £8000 for the lot, and the loss I'm taking on this is staggering, but it's costing me just to keep it in storage, so it's gotta go. (used tse118's can sell on e-bay for up to £700 a pair and the amps alone (which toured Robbie Williams) would cost half the asking price
Even the cabling cost a couple of hundred quid.

I'm gonna keep the Allen and Heath desk, but apart from that, it's a complete, fully operational, tour ready PA for sale here...

I don't have any photos of my rig but here are some of what they look like.
these are TSE118 bottom end cabs...

The top-most cabs in this shot are the Floodlight TFL760's

This shot makes the Floodlights look small (1 each side of the ridiculously large horn) but they're really not. If you read this far it's also worth looking at the web page to see what they say about this rig (See halfway down the page)

All stored in the Sheffield/Rotherham area.

PM me if any of this is of interest to you.
    Andy

  10.
My old Zon... would quite like it back at some point. Sold it someone on the old forum. Was a beautiful bass.

Zon Sonus Custom 4 with a 5A top.
wow that is a beauty.

  11.
Sorry for being a bit too offensive :) But yep I'm serious. I hate those shapes, hate 6strings hate wood coloured bass. Those are all in one  But yeah, lets not start offtopic :)
urgh

  12. I dunno how he can claim that his necks are set at a 'perfect angle'. A string, from nut to bridge is a straight line. It is only angled by the player. What he's building there, is an odd shaped body on a regular neck. ...then photographing it at an angle other than horizontal.

I wonder what his patent is actually for. Maybe we will all have to pay royalties to hang our basses over our shoulders at any angle other than the imperfect *horizontal*?

I too would have liked to hear the bass rather than his flapping jaw ...even a little.

  13.
Guess I should post this here too, even though I still only have this one poop photo. It's my GT200 with it's new 6x10 friend. Having the white matching cab makes the head look 'complete' now I think, and I feel totally vindicated for my choice of bright white with the whole ensemble :)

Oh yeah, the 6x10 owns pretty hard. I'll admit I've never been a fan of any 4x10 I've tried, so I was sceptical. It also definitely has taken me a few weeks to get used to how it sounds. It has so much low end, I'm struggling to roll enough off with the amp's tone controls to get it sounding how I like! Paired with my Precision, this amp just sounds how a rock bass really should IMHO :)

Ace cabs - definitely worth a shout if you're in the market for a new one! Heavy, but ace.
That looks wicked buddy! Very porn-worthy!

  14. I had a similar problem with a package being couriered by parcel force. It simply never showed up... When I contacted them they said it *had* been delivered and they had a signature so therefore their job was done. I explained and showed proof, that at the time of thier claimed deivery I was out of the country in our India office, and herefore couldn't possibly have signed for it. They posted me a copy of the signature (some scrawl that didn't even look like a word) This coversation went back and forth with them saying someone else at that address must've signed for it, I countered by explaining that I live alone.... back and forth. The end result was that I was told that since I was the receiver, I had no rights anyway, or claims to them, and that the sender would have to start some kind of claim.

After a while, he said he'd done all he could and that they'd said there was no case, and felt he'd done everything he needed to, (he didn't put it that way, but that was the crux of it) and that was that. I put the £200 down to experience, and don't use couriers unless I absolutely *have* to.

Buyers, you need to know that *you* have nothing but the goodwill of the sender, if your parcel goes missing, and that *you* are completely without insurance or protection, unless I guess you make a claim in court against the sender for the money back. I dunno how hard that would be or how much it might cost....
Maybe my sender was unscrupulous enough to have got the claim money back then just not sent it. I just know I never got anything but a whole mess of frustration and bile from that deal. (This wasn't a music related product, I trust people better on the basschat forums)

Can anyone else tell me where I'm missing something, cos that deal still bothers me to this day, and I'd love to feel more secure when I buy things...

Edit: Ah SO glad your experience wasn't the same as mine buddy! Your bass turned up! Brilliant. Maybe my nieghbors aren't as honest as yours! Who knows? But I'm sure glad your story turned out to have a happy ending!
    Andy

  15.
It's the just-a-nut 2, and yes, I think it's the angular one with the tabs that are prone to breaking.

I think the 3s are supposed to be much better.
Aye. I can recommend replacing the 2's with 3's. The angular 2's are simply horrible.
John Shuker changed mine to 3's which I bought from Thomann. Best few quid I ever spent.

  16.
Sold!

    To me!!

So what's all this nonsense about modern Warwick necks being thick then? This thing feels like my sterling. S'lovely. Top quality fret work too.

Not too keen on the Just-a-nuts-poo, though. I think i'll be replacing that one.
Is the just-a-nut one of the really angular ones? I found that I was hurting my hand (the side of my index finger) on the sharp ones. Had them replaced on both my thumb basses with the newer roundy edged replacement and I never hurt myself on the nut ever since.
