1. maybe this?

Schroeder Mini 10+

I use Shroeder and couldn't be happier. (They can be bought in the UK too)

It may be a bit pricey depending what you want to use it for, but it would always have a decent resale value...

2. When I was first in bands the PA was always an expense no one could afford. (Damned singers thinking a Mic is all they need!) So back then the PA was something communally owned, which mainly just allowed vocal amplification. All the rest of the sound was delivered by the backline. And bass being less audible to the human ear was always lost, when compared to the Guitar/keys.
After that we had a bit better PA, (not mine) but with all the band and drums going through it, the bass would quickly use up all the under powered amps potential, so the bass was rolled right off by the sound guy, ...and sounded weak and pappy. Very annoying.
Hence *my* personal search to have a backline which is capable of being used loudly enough (with lots of headroom) without PA assistance.
The *irony* is that I now own the 20k Turbosound rig for the bands PA and can put as much bass through it as I want/need. :)

3. Nice to hear from you buddy.
It was a very old unit, and I was actually wanting to give it away, BUT if I'd said that on the forum it would have just gone to someone who just sold it on ebay the next day. I was more interested in giving it to someone *prepared* to pay for it, (and hence actually wanted to give it a go.) I dunno how much use it was, but hopefully you got *some* mileage out of it.

:)

Thanks for the feedback mate!
Andy offered me a Wireless last February at a crazy low price, and then, after sending it, and giving me some advice on setting it up, refused for me to pay him, becuase the power supply he'd told me before was slightly dogey, was very slightly dodgey (still going strong though).

A true gent and a very helpful and kind guy.

Sorry for the late feedback,

Robin
4.
Hi,

Joking apart.

If you are playing any gigs further south I will try to be at the gigs.

Tried to get a Journey tribute together a couple of years back, quality musicians all in place but just could not find a vocalist to do the job.
I'll keep you posted mate!

Yeah getting a full line-up for a Journey band took us 3 years! The singer situation is impossible.

...well almost. We got a singer capable of singing all the songs in the original key, and who sounds GREAT! His voice really soars on those highs... We we're VERY lucky. Glad we held out now.

5.
Andy, I trust your tone has plenty of honking mids and a touch of chorus?!?!
Essential for Ross Valory sounds.... :)
I *did* use a chorus actually, but I'd only received it a coupe of days before the gig so I ended up turning it off cos I'd over-egged it for the gig. it'll be better next time.

Erm re the mids. Yeah. I have a thumb-bass which does the mids very well, and schroeder cabs... so mids are in abundance. I'm just missing the lovely growly natural distored sound I've only ever heard from Jons TF amp...

6.
Oh sh*t, I better cancel my flight tickets from the States..........Steve Perry :)
Hi Steve. I'll put the pot on if you're popping over buddy! Maybe I can convince you to do a few gigs with us? lol

7.
How did the 'rig' sound Andy and just out of interest, what bass or basses were used? :)
Hi buddy
I used the thumb bass. and the rig was erm. **LOUD** and tight. But do you know what, I haven't managed to get the growl I got at your house on that Thunderfunk through the 8x10. I can't understand it... I even bought the black streamer that I was playing that day. Sell me your Thunderfunk buddy! I need to find out if that's the missing element.

8. Thing is, I'm an old school dude. Before the internet it was possible to be called the same name as *many* club-cover bands, even in the UK. It was unlikely you would ever cross paths with a band from down London way, if you were from, say, ...Sheffield (as I am). But then the internet comes along, and everyone can see the other bands, and it's like they own the name. Well *FECK THAT!* We're just tribute acts, in different continents... Neither one of us are gonna *make it big* so I reckon that we'll not be confused with the US based band... We're not trying to sell ourselves in a big internet based promotional experience...
If someone were to turn up to one of our gigs expecting those guys, I'd be *very* surprised, and would laugh my tats off at them. :)

and finally, to be honest, we didn't know about the other guys when we decided on the name. A quick search of the internet only showed a UK based, original pop boy-band type thing... but we rehearsed for 3 years waiting to get a full line up... and we stuck with the name, cos we were used to it...

9. WOW!!! What a fantastic night! The turnout was really good! We filled a 475 seater almost to capacity! The club said that's the best takings they've had over the bar in 10 years! (probably explains why everyone had a good time, and better than we deserve actually :) )

All in all a great debut for us, ...and I couldn't have enjoyed my first stint on stage after a 16 year siesta more!

10.
Sounds great.... let me know if you get any gigs down London/Surrey/Berks way and I'll do my best to make it... :)
Indeed I will buddy!

cheers.
Andy

11. As a return favour for allowing us to rehearse at the Eastwood View WMC in Rotherham we, "Departure" have agreed to do our first gig there.

So if you're in the South Yorkshire area on Sat 12th Dec we will be performing.

You'll probably have to be an old fart to be interested in Journey songs ...and the ticket fee is £5 on the door or £3 in advance from the club,
(I have some too if anyone *was* interested in hearing my Schroeder rig of doom, marred by my bad playing... :) )

It'd be great to see you there. So come and introduce yourself if you do come!

...and may God bless all who sail on her! Andy

12.
Been told by our manager that we need to sell our old bassists rig and some other things so...if anyone's interested in any of this, please send me a pm:

Ashdown MAG 8X10 cab
Ashdown MAG 300 head
2X Ashdown 4 x 12 guitar cabs
2X Marshall heads (will have to check what they are as I can't remember..heh)
Possibly also 2X Flightcase/trunks

all located in Rugby

cheers
May be interested in the Marshall heads... one or maybe both. Let me know more.

Andy

13.
Don't know, trying to get a DB680 someone told me they were better but I don't remember who.

Well I can confirm that while the F1X is a classic tone, my preference is for the 680. easily.

However the difference in price would be *substantial*. Very substantial. So don't be afraid to go low.... :)

14.
Wanted to bump this as I'm looking for a pre I want to move from my Mesa 400+ to a pre and 2 Mesa Strategy power amps I've aquired.

I think the Aguilar is too expensive for me, but I wouldn't mind trying it to find out, if any of you guys want to try these beautiful pres through some tube power amps

Also Gremlin did you get rid of the F-1X now?
hey buddy!

nope, I still have it. Make an offer :)

15.
First of all, I used the word 'boutique' to represent a higher price level of instrument-you are just being pedantic over that one.

You also keep saying that it is 'undisputedly'....it clearly is not. In my first post I said
"Many people seem to have an added 'confidence' when playing a more expensive bass-the
Bass gives them the inspiration to play." (This was on the first page-so I have no need to re-read the title)
My argument then came at the suggestion that a better bass forces you to improve-which I disagree with. You
can become inspired to play it,but the bass will not force you to improve by itself.
I will continue to say that a good player will sound good on any instrument-you've heard the Will Lee story right?
The player is more important than the Bass.

I've really hit a nerve with you haven't I?
Have you? Doesn't feel that way from my perspective. Feels to me more like someone arguing a side issue EVEN after I said "Goddammit no-one is disputing that"
I'll leave it while you continue onwards with the side issue. Good luck.

16.
Because of course, this thread is about using 'bad' cheap basses..... :)
LoL but in my defence I *did* apologise for using such a bad example. It was extreme and was only used to justify that even the mightiest could be felled by a *really* bad example of a bass. (and as a counter to bringing a player of such "bass trancending" ability into the discussion.)

My point was that not even a player like JP would transcend their instrument at *some*, albeit extreme, level.

17.
To Ou7shined....So when you bought a new 'better' instrument, you became more inspired to improve your
technique,so you have to practice to improve. The instrument gave you the inspiration to improve, which i said can
happen in an earlier post.

To Gremlin Andy...... You say that you SPECIFICALLY ruled out my argument, but then go on to say that
"given the *SAME* player, that player is UNDESPUTEDLY served better by a better instrument". This is
where my argument lies.I don't think it is undisputed. The player may not necessarily be better served on a better instrument.
Would Jaco have been a better player on a 'boutique' bass than on a stock Fender? No..He'd still play like Jaco.

Once again,I like and own 'Boutique' basses, but I will maintain that ultimately the player is more important than
the instrument.
Goddamnit. No-one is disputing that.

but would he sound *equally* good on a 40 quid bass with bad intonation, and warped neck, crappy pots and crackly socket? and here is where I repeat *undisputedly* ...no. Therefore he WOULD be better served by a better instrument.
My argument holds up even when you try to use a silly example involving such a remarkable and unrepresentative (of the readers in this thread) player. (no offence to any players who reckon they *are* at Jacos level) :)

Nobody said "boutique", they said expensive (re-read the title.) And Jacos bass would have been expensive in it's day (and more so now obviously)

(Apologies for using an equally unrepresentative point there with the £40 bass, but expensive is just 'relative'. )

18.
A Better Bass won't make the player 'better able to use the techniques and expression'. A better Instrument can give you the
inspiration to play and practice, but it won't make you more able to express yourself. That comes from the person, not an inanimate
piece of wood.
To continue the Violin analogy, if you gave an average player a Stradavarius, the player would play it in the same way as they would
on their own instrument, they may be more inspired, but that will be all. Give a Virtuoso an average instrument and they will still play better than an average player on a great instrument.

I wasn't misrepresenting the discussion, I was refering to this quote....

"As your technique improves you reach a point where your playing allows you to go to the next level of instrument - because that instrument allows you to be more expressive. So again you gravitate to your desired point along the curve, this time governed by skill level rather than the thickness of your wallet.

Although there is the school of thought that says that if you play instruments that are beyond your ability then it forces you to get better so as not to sound like a twat."

Your Instrument has no bearing on your skill level whatsoever, and buying a nice instrument will not force you to improve your abilities.

As I have said before, I own about 20 Basses, some cheap, some expensive, but I can play all of them comfortably. While the 'boutique' basses
are undoubtedly better quality and more 'fun' to play ,if I wanted to I could do anything on the less expensive basses.
lol you make me larf

you KEEP on using a dissimilar argument *even* after I SPECIFICALLY rule it out. "Give a Virtuoso an average instrument and they will still play better than an average player on a great instrument." Fercrissakes... no ones arguing this. It's preposterous to think ANYONE is saying that a better bass will make a crap player into a virtuoso...
RE-READ the original post and digest it, and you'll see this is my EXACT point. given the *SAME* player, that player is UNDESPUTEDLY served better by a better instrument. To continue your argument is ...I dunno, so irrelevant that it staggers me.
We all know that a more expensive bass doesn't make the player. That almost goes without saying. (But, obviously, not completely)

funny.

flame on...

19.
I have to disagree with you here.
The instrument that you play has nothing to do with your ability or expression as a player.
You can be playing blues badly in a grotty pub on a Fodera, does it mean you are a good player? No,it means you can afford
a Fodera.
If you are looking at the instrument to improve your playing,I'm sorry, but you have a warped view towards music.
The technique, the expression, and most of all the music, comes firstly from the player.
You seem to be saying that a person of *any* ability will sound *exactly* the same regardless of the bass they use. No-one is trying to claim that a bad player will suddenly sound better than a good player if they have the right bass. (That's just a daft misrepresentation of the discussion)

But it is most certainly true that a better bass will make the same player better able to use the techniques and expression you mention. Unless you're suggesting that Stradivarius Violins are just a bad case of one-up-manship?

Don't worry, I'm not really suggesting you're saying that, I'm just showing that misrepresenting a discussion isn't altogether constructive.

20.
My personal view is, as someone posted earlier, simply that it's nice to own nice things. It's a sort of "thank-you" to yourself for all the hard work and long hours, when you come home and plug in that gorgeous bass. You love the look of it, the feel of it, the sound of it, and just the sheer pleasure of owning it. Whether or not you can actually play it is, I believe, secondary.

It's a bit like buying a modern sportsbike. Very few people (dare I say, practically no one?) can actually ride these things to anything like their potential, but owning it, looking after it, even just gazing at it in the garage on a cold, wet, winter's day, and riding it to the best of your own personal ability, is a very great pleasure.

If I can ever afford it, I am going to buy one of these "boutique" basses. And I only play in my spare bedroom.

:)
That's a very perceptive point you have there... that just about cuts to the nub of it.
(I just sold a Hayabusa 1300 bike (200mph plus) ...In 3 years I did about 70 miles and never went above 110mph... Lost about £3000. But feck! *what* a 70 miles that was!)

I work hard. At 49 my goal isn't to make it as a rock star... But I do earn a good wage, I have no wife to moan, ...and my tastes in instruments are purely self indulgent.
So it might not come as a surprise that regardless of my playing ability, I want the best instrument my money can buy.

My current whim is a Zon Hyperbass VII which I ordered a couple of days ago... $8700. I told you I have a good job right? Joe Zon is even going to try to arrange a leeson with Mr Manring if I go to San Fran to collect it...
Sweet Jeesus, god bless those boutique basses!

Which is better Fishcake and chips, or Caviar? I guess it depends on whether you're starving hungry, or holding a party for the King of Gondwanaland.

21.
Hello there,

My dream head has finally come up so in order to fund that I need to shift my current set up!

I have an Ampeg SVP Pro preamp. It's in amazing condition and has recently been serviced. Blurb from a music shop website:

The Ampeg SVP-Pro Series Bass Preamp uses 5 - 12AX7 tubes to provide the true, rich, tubular tone only a genuine multivalve signal path can generate. Tube Drive Control gives you precision command over just how hot those babies burn. Input peak LED, input pad and bright switch, mute function (to avoid those annoying clicks when you switch instruments mid-song), balanced line out, effects loop, 3 EQ knobs, nine-band graphic EQ, and tuner out give you all the pro flexibility you expect from Ampeg. 19"W x 1.75"H x 10"D. 9 lbs.

I'll get some pics up tomorrow :)

Not including import duties I paid £330 for this, so I'd like to get back £300. In all honesty it hasn't been used that much as I've ended up using the house bass amp for the majority of the gigs I've played in the past couple of months. It's a lovely bit of kit and in top condition.

http://www.ampeg.com/pdf/SVP-PRO.pdf

A mesa strategy 400 will also be appearing soon  , if anyone wants the pair + two 4U racks then I'd do it all for £1200.

Open to all offers

Thanks!

Ash
Pics please. (Ok, I know, ...tomorrow) (Just out of interest, why was it serviced if it's hardly used?)
