  1. I had a bass setup by Graham. He's a lovey chap and knows his stuff, for sure. He's expensive, but he's good. My only criticism is that my emails to him weren't getting through (for some reason they were ending up in spam) and he didn't give me a phone number so I ended up having to call round to approve the work! I'd happily use again, but only on an instrument I valued enough to take to him or had such big problems it needed someone with his skills.

They do take a while to play in, I’d say you will notice the difference within a few months and then they just keep on getting better 🙂

Well, they've been on a few months and it's had a fair bit of play but I kinda like it - it's really not a Bernard Edwards tone though, that's what it sounded like before. Now it's so tight it's like nothing else really. It's taken me a while to get used to it but yeah - it's very much its own animal!

  3. Hi. I've got these for sale on eBay so they may go for peanuts or they may sell for a fair price. Who knows... anyway. I got them on Gear4Music for £140 last year and the project they were intended for just hasn't come off so they're for sale. Work fine. Let me know if you're interested. Make me an offer or get a total bargain on eBay if you find 'em. Price here includes postage.

I have absolutely no intention of attempting to resist the temptation to post this, a demo I'm absolutely fixated with. (At least, the second halves of the flats-then-rounds pairs of phrases: the flats seem a waste on such a vibrant instrument.)

Can confirm. Have played something very similar to this and it was one of the best bass guitars I've ever tried out. Personally I think it sounded great with well-worn rounds. It was knackered, gigged to hell and back but the tone and the feel was out of this world. Could have done with a re-fret but if it was for sale I'd have bought it then and there but the owner cherishes it as it was her dad's. If I ever see one in a store though...

  5. I would buy an early 80s Ibanez blazer or Roadstar. I can't believe how epic these bases are. I'd be on the hunt for a hellish well worn one with loads of mojo, ideally either a P-type or maybe a 24 fret job. As long as the neck was good then anything else just adds to the vibe for me but I'd have to try it first.

I'm sure that people don't sell their Trace Elliot because they've found something that sounds BETTER, they just find gear that is LIGHTER.

TE was in demand for a good reason - cos it did what you needed it to.

You're right about the weight of an AH500 - I have one, weighs the same as two rhinos but man, it's a monster...tone you'd die for.

Well, we're all getting old and if you've got a rig that sounds 90% as good as the old one but takes up a third of the size and weighs a quarter... well... I mean I can actually carry my rig on the tube!!!! Sure, it doesn't sound as good as a solid state 500w and a big old 4x10 but I can take my bass and my rig on public transport. It's unbelievable. We are living in days of wonder!

  7. Well, this isn't going to help but the Hartke amp with the GK cab please!!!

Seriously though, the Hartke amp is bulletproof - I had one and it was built to last. Sounded great too, just too big and heavy for my requirements. I've got a MarkBass and it's fine but that one being advertised is WAY too complex, unless you need something that can store loads of settings so I'd go with the rest of the people here and say get the Hartke rig.

  8. Look, I know those things sound fantastic - I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time in the 90s gigging through an AH500 and a pair of TE 4x10s. The whole lot was flight cased up so it took quite a lot of space in the transit... Cutting edge for the time, but I CAN'T believe how tech's moved on. I had a GK CX210 that sounded fantastic, and loud, and light and cost under £300. I'd really suggest a 2x10 cab to recreate something of the sound you're used to, and yes - you could take the amp out of your combo and put it in a new case but it will still weigh a lot, once you've felt how light a class D amp is you'll never want to go back to carrying an old-school amp around. I used MarkBass now and it's.... okay. Not that charismatic but it's very light and sounds fine.

Just pulled the trigger on a Rickenbacker 4003s 5 string

I am assured that Monday will be NBD...I have scheduled something in my work diary so that my boss will be under the impression that I am working on a project and should not be disturbed all day

I have really REALLY liked the look of these. I am very envious!

  10. Bought an Ibanez SR505 from psycoandy and today I’ve taken my first steps into 5-string bass playing. Andy had some trouble with the courier (given the current global crisis I’m not surprised) but kept me in the loop and has been great to deal with. One happy punter here. Thanks!

Change of make with out a doubt.  I also found that the Rotosounds had a 'floppy' E string which tended to sound sharp until it settled down and the heavier gauge and make cured this.  Also, with Rotosound I had to change string monthly  or one of them was guaranteed to break.  With both Elites and NewTone this was / is never a problem.

Thanks, this is really helpful. Much appreciated. I *think* the bass came strung with D'darios, and there was a nice "thump" with the attack, and I just happened to have some Rotosounds hanging around so I fitted them and they are very disappointing. The Elites seem good value, I'll try a set. Cheers!

Yes, it was exactly that problem especially with 45 - 105 gauge.  I changes to Elite Stadiums 50 - 110 and I suddenly had a notes all the way up the E string instead of strange overtones.  I have now changed to NewTone strings, 50 - 110 and they're even better.

Right, okay, interesting - is it your opinion it's the change of make of string or the different gauge or both? Another question - how different is the feel, playing heavier gauge?

  13. Yeah. Well... I've been playing Rapture for weeks and weeks. WRONG! I actually think that the version I've been playing is a bit harder but now I'm going to have to re-learn since I actually looked up the tab - though in my defence I picked up the mistake from YouTube. Next... Boys And Girls by Blur - very repetitive, easy to learn, but getting it fluid and clean will take a bit of practise https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/blur/boys-and-girls-bass-17777
