You've done well to stay so open minded.  Me, I hate Jazz basses, skinny necks, bridge pickups...

I think some of it's down to having terrible technique when I was younger then having an accident and pretty much had to re-learn to play. Since then I've become quite obsessed with learning and as I've gone from one bass to another rather than made it more difficult, it's just made me approach it differently. I love playing with a pick, and fingers. I like rounds and flats. I'm even getting used to a higher action, which is something I never used to be able to do. I've got a preamp that has amazing distortion and now I'm enjoying going down that route too. I kind of have to impose discipline on myself to focus on one thing rather than getting distracted! Been plugging away at Rocco muting recently...

You'll figure it out eventually. You've already pinpointed a preference for satin neck finishes. Once you build up a few more positive preferences you'll start to focus in on basses which satisfy those criteria over others.

It doesn't have to evolve into an outright dislike/hatred of certain basses either - a few simple preferences will steer you towards what you like over others.

Yep. I've been playing bass since 1990 so if I haven't worked it out by now ... anyway. I'd rather change my technique and style to a bass I like. Does me good.

  3. I've fantasised about a Bass-Swap-Shop where I can pay a monthly fee and they'll send me a different bass each month, taking away the old one! Mind you, Basschat can kind of be like that... I had a lovely Ibanez SR505 for a while that I bought on here and sold for a bit less than I paid for it. Great way to find out if I like 5 strings (yes, yes I do, very much).

Give me a collection of modest but decent basses over a couple of amazing ones all day long. My mood changes daily. One night I'm into flats, the next the brighter zing of active, the next passive honk.... etc. I want access to a choice of sounds and feels to cater for my mood that night. I definitely don't have a clue what my ideal bass is, not a clue.

I completely understand, but it's also why I'd hate to have a custom instrument built. I'd imagine the conversation would go like

Luthier: So what wood do you want?

    Me: Um, nice wood please

    Luthier: riiiiigh. Pickups?

    Me: I think so, yes

    Luthier: (sigh) neck profile?

    Me: Yes, definitely a profile.

Luthier: (puts down piece of paper) how about this one here I've already made?

    Me: Perfect!

  5. I know this is going to sound daft, but I really don’t know what I like in a bass. Precision? Love ‘em. Jazz? Great. Stingray? Lovely. Ricky? Gorgeous! Tight spacing? Fine. Wide? Cool. 20 frets? Go for it. 24? Whatever. Single coils? Great. OR humbucker.

literally…. I pick it up and it’s either: yeah baby yeah!!!! Or meh….Nop. I can’t explain why.

I do like a satin finish on the neck tho.

  6. Hi. I bought this a few months ago and basically I've just used it as a DI. It's got some great features, the ability to run two channels, the cab sim, the fact you can do an FX blend  etc all brilliant but I just find I don't use them, all I'm using it for is running into the desk so I'm putting it back on the market. Just wanting to get pretty much what I paid for it.

I think I paid £135 + postage on top so I'm selling for £129 UK postage included. Can't say fairer than that. I'll include a Duracell 9v battery with lots of life in it too! Comes in original box with box stuff, I don't honesty think this thing has ever seen a gig, Any questions give me a shout.

I have one of these, which I bought maybe 10 months or so back.  I'm not really a 5 string player - I got it just to have a 5'er in my collection to noodle on.

I bought mine because of its nicely contoured, comfortable body, its light weight (under 4kg - great for a 5 string!). And because it's comfortable to play. Added to this, the pickups & electrics are high quality (if a tad modern sounding) with a wide tonal pallete.

All in all, a great value bass. If I didn't already have one - I'd be buying this, especially at that price!

    GLWTS

Yeah the bass I’ve replaced it with is … heavy! But thanks.

I have exactly the same and have owned for ~10 years. It's a wonderful bass and silky smooth when set up correctly. I'm never selling mine but at this price, tempted to buy another....GLWTS.

I mean, it's a doozie! They are so light and easy to play. This one's set very low but I've been playing a bass with wider spacing and slightly higher action and I've gotten used to that now. How on earth they knocked these things out for the price is beyond me... Oh, and I got this from fellow Basschatter psychoandy, but I can't find the original post anywhere... I'm asking the same as I paid for it so really just want it to get some appreciation from someone else. Cheers!

  9. I got this about a year ago to see how I'd get on with 5 strings and I'm a convert.

Nice as this is (and it is) I've gone all multi scale with wider spacing and more pickups so this is now surplus to requirements.

I got it set up at The Bass Gallery in July and it's got a set of Gear4Music premiums on it (not bad, kind of rich and fruity, still got life in them).

I'm happy to post but at the moment I don't have any packaging, just waiting for a bass to come back from repair then I'll have a box (hopefully won't be more than a week or two, god help me if the thing ends up going back to Canada...). Anyway, if you want to collect in the meantime I'm happy for a try-out in New Cross Gate SE London and I've got a gig back for it too. Check out my feedback.
