1. It's more important on a bass than on a guitar as the difference in string intonation length is much wider. If you use a straight bridge your intonation will be quite noticeably out once you get much past the 8th fret on the lower strings. The easiest way to work out a decent angle would be to take a look at an electric which has the same scale length, the same strings and the same action as you're going to use on your acoustic, then measure the angle between the lowest and highest strings at the bridge.
2. There's a fair bit on Lets Talk Guild and Talk Bass. The reaction's been decidedly mixed regarding the quality but the sound is meant to be pretty close - whether it's close to a Hagstrom Bisonic or a Hammon Dark Star isn't clear.
3.
Are you plugging straight into soundcard? Sounds like that, its because the impedance of the input is wrong for instrument pickups, try with a pedal with a buffer between, like a boss TU2, might help, otherwise something designed for plugging instruments to computers is the way to go.
No I went through a V-Amp. One or two listeners have complained about a lack of volume only to find the recently added Soundcloud volume bar to be turned way down on their computers. Thanks for the advice though - I'm always interested in how to get a better sound onto the laptop. Here's the latest...
4. A Jazz with ashtrays is cool as it gets but it has to have both covers for proper kudos
5.
Wow, that looks great! Well done! How does it sound?
Thanks! I'll get some sound samples up soon.
6. Aw thanks! Yer all too kind. I'll stick some sound samples up when I get some time.
7.
Looks great, and reminds me how weird Gibson's black ES-335 bass looks with no body binding.
Thanks for the comments and yes, so far as binding goes I think it is intrinsic to a 335/EB-2/general semi solid's look and feel. I based the shape on a mash up between a Guild Starfire and the aforementioned EB-2. More development pictures to come....
8. Pretty much finished although I'm already working on a new, improved version in blonde. Then there's the fretless version with piezo....... I'm quite pleased with the way it handles and sounds with the humbuckers but I might add a few switching options - making nickel/chrome covers for the pickups too. The bridge looks a bit modern so I'm thinking of replacing it with a Supertone 2 point, just because it's got a nicer shape. Lots to think about still.
9. Finished - yay! Now I've got to route out my semi hollow to fit them. The work just never ends.....
10. Just bought Jon's Bass Cube. He'd kept it in near perfect nic and was a pleasure to deal with. I'd be happy to buy from him again.
11. OK, you'll have a vaguely playable fretless with a brushed on finish but no paint application (spray or brush) goes on super smoothly so you generally have to cut it back with sandpaper to give it that silky smooth finish. Some people on here have used superglue - I think most use the thin stuff. You can spray paint a lacquer onto a fretless fingerboard (Fender used it on their maple necks), but the only lacquer hard enough to withstand coating a fretless board is polyester, which is poisonous enough to kill you without a proper spray booth and an air fed mask.
12. Yeah totally normal. Pigments change and clear lacquers tend to yellow due to oxygen and uv, both of which we have in abundance on this particular planet. Just keep an eye - if the paint starts to crack, craze or get really patchy, kick up a big fuss
13. I built a food cupboard than happened to have a couple of heating pipes running up the back. Insulate them with a bit of rockwool (loft insulation) and box them in and you'll be fine. No need to add any kind of vents, it's only a short run of pipe. I used big screws covered in that foam tube they use for bike handlebars for my instrument hangers.
14. Looks like it could end up really nice although I expect there'll be a fair few blisters if you're doing a carved back with hard woods like those
15. Still for sale or swap - I'm open to any interesting lightweight trades - it doesn't actually need to be a combo
16.
Pm coming your way.
Replied, thanks
17. Forgot to say, this is a 1979 Marshall from the JCM800 range. According to the previous owner, the new valves were installed by Marshall themselves along with a service.
18. Ha that's spooky - I don't suppose you want to swap it for a 4x10 100watt Marshall valve combo???
19. Vintage and very rare Marshall 4150 100 watt 4x10 combo in very cool brown tolex with oatmeal grille. In very nice condition considering it's 30 odd years old. Fairly new and very unused EL34's plus original Celestion speakers. Easy to gig with as it's not huge or particularly heavy for a 100 watt pure valve 4x10 combo. It works well for guitar too being loud and clean in a Fender twin kind of way but with 100 watts of headroom. The compressor's never really been great (to my ears at least) but all the tone stack etc. works fine. I'm looking to swap/part exchange it for a compact combo along the lines of a Markbass 12", Genz Shuttle 3 or GK MB150 or alternatively something like £500. I'm selling because I need a very small pro combo I can stick up on a shelf in my workshop when I'm not using it. I can take more pictures if anyone needs them. Can also deliver if within a hundred miles or so of Hertfordshire.
20. Further to some requests I've posted a sound file on Soundcloud of my recently wound NuSonic. Try to ignore the noisy, slightly trebly quality of the recording (I'm still getting my head around Audacity, so any pointers would be most appreciated as most comments so far have been about the s##te recording), and my playing (no excuses there...) https://soundcloud.com/lhnbornbassesandpickups/bss4 Played with fingers on a 30" scale solid body strung with Pyramid Golds.
21. Looks really good. 51 Tele's don't look right unless they're a bit reliced
22. Thanks Dannybuoy, that sounds like the way to go. Regarding microphones, I've only got the one built into the laptop
