1. Hello - I am new as well but enjoying the forum loads.... Yep, impressed...........not just riding but road testing........you going to tell me you got all your own hair as well aren't you??
2. yep, prices are per item - took bloody ages to write and looked ok but reading it again I blobbed - sorry for any confusion........
3. Thanks for that - I think it is great kit too. Not everyone has had great experiences with Mackie gear but mine have been fine. Many of the issues are due to the gear being heavily overdriven from the desk. Like a lot of suppliers, Mackie make a big deal of all their kit having internal limiters making it idiot proof but repeated high transients from poor desk and gain structure set up will cause them to blow if the user gives them a hammering. I use the small 350 Mackie as monitors because they are perfect for most monitoring situations. I did try the large 450s but found they sometimes tripped on thermal overload when lying on their side. They seem to need the extra air circulation around them. Getting interest in the gear listed but need to shift it so bump for me !!
4. Hello from expat Jock living in North East Deep fried Mars Bar?? Nah, deep fried pizza and fried Cadbury cream egg for dessert....... heart attack on a plate..........lush.......
5. I will probably need to relocate for work, can't take all this PA gear with me so I am putting it up for sale. I would prefer the bigger lumps to be sold as one but will consider split. They are in very good condition, were a back up rig so not extensively gigged and stored indoors. The rest of the gear is in similarly good condition and I probably even have most of the packaging for the processors, mics etc. I would prefer to have the bigger lumps collected due to the size and weight. I have this advertised else where (not fleabay!!) and will keep the list as up to date as possible. In addition, I will answer all direct mails with prices on request Lastly, I would consider part ex for the larger stuff with cash eg Musicman bass etc and will negotiate if someone wants to buy more than one piece of kit. Prices are negotiable to an extent !! Check feedback for opinions on gear sold already http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=40248 Excepting the offer on the full rig, prices to sell are per item. 6. Highly recommend ''Progressive Bass Guitar by Gary Turner and Brenton White'' Really good for getting you started without dragging you through theory first.
7. Funny that, it was always the ear training part that had me scared sh@%less !! The test piece you will have to play will be SIMILAR to the ones you are practicing but WILL NOT be the same examples. I don't know if you know it but RGT do extension practice books for both rhythm and improv. I have used them and felt they made a big difference - tended to be harder than the exam !! Check them out. In the exam and depending on the grade, you will be shown a test piece to play over, you will get a minute or so to decide which key to play it in and whether you will use major / minor / blues etc. You should note that the RGT exam books usually just reflect examples in ONE key only but in the exam it can be ANY so make sure you practice your shapes over all the relevant key positions for the grade you are doing. You will get marks for using different kneck positions, arpeggio where suitable, riff style, hammer on, timing, dynamics etc - again all depends on the grade you are doing. If you can do them then use them - it all counts. I know I have gone on a bit but the important thing is to enjoy it. Don't treat it as an exam but a way to measure how well you are doing. The route you are taking will really make a difference to you Lastly, hope this has helped - let me know how you get on with it - interested.
8. was studying Grade 6 for guitar but never touched them for bass. what you stuck with?
9. Have one for the very old GP11 - any use to you? It is in pdf format so if you tell me how I can e-mail it, you are welcome to it.
10. Hello Gundog, With a name like that, you partake of the old field sports?
11. For the money, you should try them. Storage conditions are important but if sealed in the packs and never been on an instrument then they won't be corroded or work hardened
12. It does not matter whether or not it becomes the law of the land because local authorities are pretty much applying these conditions now. If a venue is applying for an entertainments license and it has complaints against it from the local residents, then these are considered and invariably a monitoring device will become part of the license condition. The issue is that as ''neepheed'' said, it can be the venue's own fault however that is not always the case cos I know of several in the NE that were in place long before the houses that grew up around them - thinking ''Coach and Horses'' in Washington. Big music venue for a long time but got nailed some years ago along with some of the local working mens clubs. Limit is so low in one of them that a solo singer with acoustic guitar will trigger it............yet it was quieter than the ambient noise from passing traffic outside!!
13. From mixed reviews looks like I'm glad I missed the Hootenany. Normally enjoy Mr Holland's shows cos he pulls in some class acts but can't get a handle on the New Year dross that seems to get rolled out in the form of Hogmanay specials. Looks like I fall into the same camp as yorks5stringer. Can I join the grumpy old men club then?? Anyway, did usual 'stereo type' Jock thing - went to pub until the bells, party after it until I stopped counting drinks - bit of a sickly puppy today but saw New Year in with a bang and not a whimper. Happy New Year All and hope you are all going into a better one.........
14. Have a look at the nice piece of work pinned under the ''Amps and Cabs'' section by BOD2 entitled ''DI Boxes and playing through the pa''. Will explain it in detail for you. This is purely from a sound man point of view but the DI box is probably the unsung hero of stage setup for such a comparatively simple piece of kit. If you consider the range and strengths of signals a desk will see on each channel, the DI allows the signal to be boosted/ attenuated as required or simply split to allow separate monitoring not driven by the desk. This is pretty simplistic but in essence it enables a level of control. A good DI however will add no colour or tone to the signal. Commonest use is for placing in line when using mics which only output in mV so they can be taken to a level the desk (which is essentially a preamp) wants to handle - especally if the desk is a distance so the signal does not degrade. If the desk has a good signal to play with, it can markedly clean up the PA sound without the engineer playing with the EQ which will change your sound or pushing the gain too high which can create 'noise'. Read the notes by BOD 2 but there is a lot out there as well to research if you are interested. You might want to look at the Soundcraft web site and down load their mixing guide. I know it might not be your bag but trust me, I have no issues with musos telling me what they would like when they can talk sensibly around the desk. Makes my life a whole lot easier !! hope this helps some...........
15. Yep, can back up what eskimo bassist said - I have at least 4 of these little DI100 'bricks' and they get bounced around stage without any problems. Extremely transparent sound and can be run from battery or 48v phantom power. When I have a lot of DI requirements and running over 100 feet from the stage (extensive drum mics for example), I use a bank of three Behringer DI4000 that connect to the stage snake. More Behringer kit but again extremely efficient running off mains or phantom - worth a look - it is around £55 - £60 but it would allow more than you to plug into it. See link. 16. check this from Fender - covers lecky diagrams for ALL Fender instruments and amps, their dating, manuals etc ..... can be down loaded on pdf ..... apologies if this is on another thread but being a newbie I may have missed it so don't flame me ........... 17. Had a bit of exposure to the 6 string guitar Ampeg / Dan Armstrong acrylic. Clever modular pick up design that could be changed out in seconds but instrument was pretty heavy. Looked the biz on set though and clear body was completely stable despite a hot venues. Anyone got the bass version? Comments? Experience? Too off the wall?
18. I have seen these demoed and to be honest: - the clarity was superb, - highly portable and light weight - well suited to a singer and acoustic guitar where simple works ie set and forget - superb where space and ease of use was more important. - monitoring not required due to 360 degree sound field - they can be linked into external pa equipment - modular approach so add on is just plug and play But.... - each column and bass unit was around £1700 so call it £3400 to cover each side of the stage - limited inputs.......BOSE recommend each instrument has it's own column and bass unit !! - if a unit goes down you have nothing - I can't see them being robust enough for a long life, getting horsed in and out of vans meaning they won't roadie well !! - there is no possible way they would have the head space if there is a larger venue - with 360 sound field, feed back could be a complete pig and no real way to control it - really not suited to the complexity of a band I like seeing developments and in my opinion, a clever idea but NOT one I would go for. There is a lot of mid priced, light weight pa kit out there that could be bought new, could kick out more than enough to fill (with head space) a lot of the venues many bands play in. Further, with careful planning can be expanded on later and integrated into an upgrade.
19. ha ha knew it..............glad you're being a man about it and fessing up to the truth...........new, shiny and more flashing lights roolz............. why do you think I preferred being a sound man as opposed to playing? Ok I admit it I sit in dark corners cos I have no mates, but all that gear, all those flashing lights.............oooer......
20. project_c I could give you all the burb about: your sound engineer ( me too) just hearing bass and problems with standing sound waves creating low level feedback for him as your bass rebounds off hard surfaces at practice (why does he not just mic you if you have a sweet rig and turn the others down), your drummer can't hear you cos he gets his head down and goes for it and is suffering brain damage from loud noise and your lead guitarist having optional deafness (that's guitarists I'm afraid) let's cut to the chase...........you really have a case of gas that is growing by the day and you are trying to persuade yourself to ask Santa for something new ........ !! No offence, only teasing...........been the sound man for God knows how many practices and gigs and you should remember that you need to trust what he/she hears out front and NOT what you hear - even if you have good monitoring .....you are probably projecting far more and far cleaner than you realise.....
21. Hello All, Like many here, been a closet reader of this site but decided to come out !! A Jock based in the North East for many years (Jarra Lad now) and a big music nut. Been a bed room guitarist for a long time, recently picked up the bass and simply loving it !! My main bag in the past has been covering pa/ mixing for live bands. Covered a lot of indie/ rock bands but belonged to a Rush tribute band until they stopped playing last year. Main tastes in music tend to be Sabbath, zep, tull, blues - wow really shows my age......... As a new bass player, really looking forward to learning more from the many threads and (hopefully) might even be able to contribute sometime !! Won't bore you with the guitars and amps but bass gear: PRS 4, swampash - imported new from the States this year (with other gear) when the £/ $ was good and got it for silly ££ Ampeg svt6 pro Ampeg svt 410hlf Took a lot of advice from players, know what it sounds like at the desk and just used my money when I could to get decent kit - took a long time to get there......... Be Good High Score
