Pre Covid, the band I was in played some function gigs but mainly clubs and pubs. I enjoyed the mix of setlists and I liked the challenge that a wedding or corporate event of functions but for me, the best gigs (i.e. the ones I enjoyed the most) were the pubs. I have every respect for the discipline required by a good function band but at my level of playing, I concentrate so much on getting my parts right that any performance often takes second place. Our pub gigs are rougher around the edges but much more fun for all. If the band is having a good time, it shows in the performance and the audience will pick up on it.

As part of the audience, I always enjoy a band who are clearly having a good time.

Aprt from the playing in a function band bit (I never have), you summarise my position better than I could. Live performance (in a rock band at least) should have a bit of spark to it.

  2. I was at my cousin's wedding last weekend and they had a function band on in the evening.

Very polished, everything arranged to the nth degree, obviously some very talented musicians. But,...........

........................ my God was it dull!

And you felt that if you saw them again it would be exaclty the same again.

  3. Was the test with the friend's rig in the same room as you tried yours? If not that could explain the difference, iether your mains earth is not very good, or your room is electrically noisy (dimmer switches?), (or it's something else). First thing I'd do would be to do more tests to narrow it down, and only look at your bsses' screening/earthing if that is indicated.

I guess you could get into the minutiae of it, but - in my opinion - it's not live. It's been done already, and it's being played back.

Not that Ed cares what I think, mind.

For me it comes down to what I'd rather see: A band, or one clever person with a clever bit of hardware? (Hint: It's the band)

    Squier pickups -> SD QPs

Knackered original pots -> KiOgon loom with series/parallel switch

Original tuner -> Hipshot drop D tuner

    All upgrades imho

This hits the nail on the head. I would tend to agree that these are upgrades but, for example, if someone else has no interest in Drop D, then that is not an upgrade, and it's possible that someone prefers the original Squier pickups to the SDs.

The idea of modifications is that it tailors the bass to your preferences, but it's important to recognise that this might be different other peoples preferences.

  6. What ever method you use to turn it, it may be worth sticking a soldering iron on it first to expand it a bit, and then let it cool down again. This can help break the 'seal' between the screw and the wood. Alternatively, once to have a dimple in the end put a centre punch in it and wack it with a hammer. - again only enough to break the seal, you'll still need to turn it.

A word of warning ion the scree extractors, thay are hard and can snap - leaving you with a piece of hardened steel in the end of the screw.

Just to expand on this idea, how about the the theme from Jaws that speeds up as it approaches a detected person? 🦈

I was reading this thread and thought "I've got a cracking Idea". But you beat me to it you bugger (in the nicest possible sense of the word) - by two hours.
