I got one of those rm 210 combos from musik prod and paired it with a rm 210 cab. Great light weight stack. Powerful and a whole host of options - compression, drive, headphones etc. Looks a nice cool rig too.

BUT it's probably very similar footprint as your big twin.

I also have a big twin for another band and I think it's the best compromise between footprint, power and quality out there. It isnt much bigger than a super compact.

Yep getting the 210 cab crossed my mind too.   It works on price, power, sound and features, but not on footprint.  Might look at an RM500 or 800 head with smaller cabs though.

What about an RM combo? Not the tiniest footprint but will be small, light, loud and sub-£500…:

£332??  Is that right??  They are £849 from Ashdown!

The only thing that puts me off is that you'd realy need another cab underneath to get the full 500w out of it, but it's mighty tempting!   Good find - and I do love Ashdown...

You'll have to explain the problem with £££'s worth of gear on this gig. Eg I have a problem with leaving my good stuff overnight at venues I know to be insecure. As far as worrying about my stuff under supervision goes, I don't allow any beverage storage on top and that takes care of it.

It's very hard to knock over two 210s that are ratchet strapped together.

I really love my Big Twin and ABM, I don't want to change it as it's perfect for my other projects.  I have a custom Zoot plus a Stingray that just sound the nuts trough it.  I've spent years and thousands of pounds (and not to mention lots of false starts/dead endings with other gear) putting it together and I absolutely love it.

This is not the gig for that gear.  This is playing small/medium sized pubs with rowdy punters and a lively band in small alcoves!  I'm using sub £300 basses that I don't care if they get knocked over, hit into cymbals etc so aside from the practicalities of the Big Twin/ABM and not wanting them to get damaged/nicked there's very little point in using such a high end amp for this gig.

I just need a half decent sub £500ish set up that's small and up to the job, and again I don't mind if it gets knocked about.  I'll save my other set up for other gigs.

Not sure how people can think that 2 bf210s would be considered small. I mean, yes, it has probably a few square inches of less floor, but as someone that plays in small pubs, I would never have the space for that. the 2 RH112s with an amp on come up to waist heigh and if necessary fits under the cymbals by the drum kit.

Yep think a couple of smallish 112's and a Class D head might be they way to go.   There are some Eden ones that look very compact that have caught my eye.

What's the need for the Big Twin if two 210's can get the job done and solve the stage footprint issue?

It's as much that I don't want to take £1.5k+ worth of amp to these gigs tbh.  Also the ABM is a rack mount and only just fits on top of the Big Twin, so pretty sure it would be a bit precious on top of a vertical 210.

  6. 2 hours ago, Downunderwonder said:

A pair of BF 210 stood up tall would be pretty much as capable as your big twin cab. Trading in wouldn't cost too much if you keep the amp.

Run a ratchet strap around the stack to make it resistant to a shoulder charge if you are that concerned about shenanigans.

Actually this is one of the first things I thought too.  However I'd rather keep the Big Twin for other gigs and have a cheaper and more expendable amp for this band if possible!

My suggestion would have been the Markbass CMD121P & NY121 - smaller footprint, quite tall and 500 watts but unlikely to get that within budget.

There’s not much on the market with a smaller footprint than Barefaced that is very loud and good on the wallet.

Will have a look at these - may be able to stretch the budget a little 😬

  8. Hi All,

I've joined a new local band.  Fairly standard pub rock covers, but done well and blooming loud 😂

It's a 5 piece and I know the venue's we play are going to have very limited stage space, and the load in's/outs are going to be a pain.

I used my Big Twin II and ABM 600 on the weekend and whilst it sounded awesome it was just a little OTT and took up too much stage space.

I was thinking that I might look out for a rig that would be smaller and easier, whilst also being loud enough to keep up.  Possibly an upright 208 or 210 combo (Like TC BG250-208 or Mark Bass 802)  with a matching cab underneath, or two cabs and a head.  Really like to have at least 500w available to me if possible.  I'm not so worried about weight as I am size, and definitely want something with some hight rather than a combo alone on the floor with all the sound going under me!

Budgetwise I'd like to keep it under £4-500, so probably looking at second hand.  I've already elected not to take my best basses to these gigs as they are pretty rough and things are likely to get knocked about, so have a cheap Ibanez 4 string and Sire V3 5'er lined up for this project, so just need a cheapish amp to match.

However I may be asking too much of little amps like this, so if anyone has any recommendations or experience of similar set ups it would be great to hear!

    Cheers,

    Matt

  9. For sale is a refurbished Limited Edition Epiphone Wildkat.

Made in August 2012 this was a limited run in metallic black (Black Royale) which looks fantastic. When I got the guitar it hadn't been played for some years and I have carefully recommissioned it as a project.  After an initial inspection I installed a brand new high quality jack socket as the original had failed, and then cleaned up all the electrics which now work without fault or crackle. Jack failure isn't uncommon on these types of guitars and the new socket should give years of hassle free service.

I then stripped all the hardware and cleaned and polished the paintwork to a high shine. The bodywork is virtually mark free - the only blemish is a small hairline crack where the binding on the underside of the neck at the cutaway meets the paint as pictured in photo 6. This can't be seen or felt when playing and is purely superficial, otherwise this is in absolute stunning condition for a 9 year old guitar. After this the frets were then polished, the fretboard cleaned and oiled, all metal work cleaned and polished, and then the guitar was reassembled with Ernie Ball slinky strings (9's). I then did a final set up, adjusting the truss rod to which moves easily and works perfectly to set the relief, and finally set the string height and intonation at the bridge.

The guitar now looks great and plays brilliantly, and as a bonus comes with a factory hard case (worth £100 alone) which again is in really excellent condition, and does a great job of protecting the guitar. The P90 pick ups are really versatile, they obviously do the hollow body 335 type thing really well, but also dirty up really nicely for rock tones too, and the Bigsby is a lovely addition. I have photos of the restoration should the buyer be interested in seeing them. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Great story that it all worked out.

How tempted are you to pair this with an Ashdown 810, just because 😉

I think you have made the right decision adding another 210.

This is a bit of an old thread now, but it sounded great with the second 210.  I was very tempted with an 810 to be fair, but I did end up with a Barefaced Big Twin 2 to try with it too, which also sounded great.  Huge sound!!

However the Barefaced also sounded really excellent with my ABM600 - so good in fact, that once I started gigs and rehearsals again, this is what I was consistently taking out.

So I was left in a bit of a dilemma.  I'd lusted over a CTM for year and finally had one, but wasn't using it  - and ultimately decided to sell on the basis that although it sounded better in curtain circumstances than the ABM, it was marginal, and the ABM is far more versatile.

I sold the CTM and 210's last month locally to a guy in a Foo Fighters tribute, so went to a good home at least.

However I could definitely be tempted by one again in the future if the circumstances are right - I just don't currently have the funds and space to justify both!

  11. I've been looking at this as have a dep gig in a few weeks where I really need one or I'll be changing basses nearly every song!

I borrowed a friend's HX FX for a rehearsal last night and used the Simple Pitch effect.  Was absolutely brilliant, even when playing double stops or three note chords.  Didn't even bother trying the new polyphonic options which are supposed to be even better.  I had a HX about 18 months ago, and sold it in preference of building up a board again (having sold all my pedals to by the HX 🤣), but have to say that having used one again last night I am really tempted to get one again.   Given a decent detune pedal is £100+, and you can pick up an HX FX for less than £300 second hand, and on top of all the other effects of has tuner, looper, and also bass pedal for those Geddy Lee moments!!

Obviously this is available on all the helix variants and the go, so certainly something to consider.

  12. Edit:. Withdrawn. Grabbed this for a rehearsal last night and it sounded so good I can't bring myself to sell it 😂

I bought this a while back in a fit of nostalgia for my old EVO II that started my love of Ashdown.  A chap up the road was selling it for his grown up daughter, who played this in a band while at school, had since been to uni and then migrated to Japan and this has been sat in their garage ever since.

It was untested but looked hardly used, so I took a punt on it.  I was really lucky, on taking the head out it was immaculate inside.  I tested it and other than a slight crackle on a few pots it was perfect.  I took it to Guy at Ashdown for a service and he gave it a once over and replaced the valve drive pot, and it's sweet now.

However I've then only played it a handful of times since and am trying to raise funds to buy a CTM200, so am tentatively putting it up for sale.

Cosmetically there's a few minor scratches and small knocks in the tolex, but it's probably as clean as they come for a 19 year old UK made Ashdown.

The board was printed by Clive Button on 30/04/02 (see pic).  Interesting it's labelled as a 500w amp.  When I asked Dave Green about this when I had one before, he told me at one stage they were selling 500w amps labelled as 300's (under-promise and over deliver was the idea), but I can't confirm if this is indeed 500w.  It is blooming loud though!

Priced to sell at £295 - this is a lot of amp for your money, especially one that is UK made and recently serviced.

    Collection from Chelmsford, Essex.

  13. As per my other posts I have gone "all valve" and so my ABM600rc is for sale, complete with flight case and footswitch.

If you are looking at this you'll probably already know how great these sound and how flexible they are.

£450 gets you a lot of amp - new the footswitch and case would be £120+ alone!  These are a huge step up from the EVO III.

Bought new from PMT about 2 years ago, not been pushed hard and hardly used over lockdown as I've been using my CTM300 almost exclusively.  I took it to rehearsal last week to make sure all was in order and it sounded great (and was I almost convinced to keep it 😁).

Could possibly be tempted to trade for a 5 string Ibanez or Jazz, but sale is preferred as I am trying to raise funds to get a CTM200rc - as I really want something a little more portable than the 300 (which is for sale on another thread).

Also available are two ABM210 cabs with covers for £325 each.  Also very also very lightly used and come with Roqsolid covers with £60+ each.  One or both of these would be an ideal match for this head - it's like a modular 410 and much more transportable - plus the two allow you to run the ABM at 4ohm for maximum omph!  I've just gone down the Barefaced route and so these are surplus to requirements.  More pics of the cab are available on the CTM300 thread.

    Collection from Chelmsford, Essex.

  14. Hi All,

Tentatively putting this up for sale.  It is a truly awesome set up, but I recently got a Barefaced Big Twin II for cab duties which I'm loving, and whilst I love this head I'm seriously looking at getting a CTM200 as I really want something rackmountable for a couple of Festival Gigs I have later this summer.

Really excellent condition.  A couple of really minor marks on the head, and one on one of the cabs, but nothing you'd notice from more than a foot away.   This is a lot of amp for the money - you get 2 cabs, and the 3 covers (which were £150+ for the set), with the head for less than the retail for the CTM300 alone!  These have done very little work as I started putting this together shortly before the first lockdown, so have done handful of gigs and rehearsals, plus a few days in the studio recording.

The 210 cabs are much easier to lug about than a 410, with the advantage that you can just take one to smaller gigs/recordings.

Of course I'd consider a trade for a CTM200 in the unlikely event anyone has one going spare and wants the 300!  I may also split for sensible offers.

Limited pics for now as it's raining and need to get it all outside for decent light!  This was the last time I had it out just before the December lockdown plus the covers.  I'll add some more when the weather improves!

Collection only form Essex.   Any questions ask away.

    Matt
