4. I've used my 6t 9b combo outside without going through the PA and kept up with drummer mic'd and 2x12 guitar rig and vocals and keyboards through 500+500W PA. As Bumnote said, people are often put-off by PJ gear thinking that the tiny cabs are going to be ridiculously loud, and that's not what phil's trying to do. His cabs are all about build and sound quality, not volume. Having said this they're still plenty loud enough if used in the right situation (i regularly get commented on my 4B running alone and by my larger rig, because i use them where they're suited, people mostly comment on the crystal clear sound throughout the whole room without being overwhelming nearer to the stage). You shouldn't be surprised that the 5" drivers can go low, it's all about power handling and surface area. 4*5" drivers have the same surface area as 1x10", and at 100W RMS each, often better power handling. Where the smaller drivers have the upper hand is in their transient response - much smaller and lighter, so each driver reacts much quicker, and more uniformaly over that 100 square inch area than a 1x10, where the driver is comparatively heavier and has greater diameter, causing less uniform response from the central drive point. This creates the clearer, punchier sound, which is therefore more defined.
5.
dont know any EUB techs, but Malcolm Healey is a very knowledgeable luthier in SW london. He may be able to help. Charged me a fiver to fix a crack in my DBs rib. What a gent! check out: www.healeyviolins.co.uk
I'd +1 malcolm, recently put some adjusters on my bridge, and suggested a price to me, before realising that he'd discounted so much that the parts were more expensive than what he'd said, so ended up just throwing in the labour for free! However i don't know if he does much EUB work.
6. Hi All, I've just bought a Pair of Ohm MR-130i Monitors, and need to get an appropriate amp for them. THey're rated at 100W RMS, and are 16 Ohm. I know the usual plan is twice the RMS watts to avoid amplifier distortion, however finding a 200W into 16 Ohm studio (or just fanless) amplifier seems a) difficult, and maybe abit overkill with a sesitivity of 91 dB 1W/1m. Any suggestions (don't have a budget much over £100, so looking second hand mostly)? Was beign tempted by a valve amplifier, hwoever much lower output, and possibly not the best idea for mixing. SHould i just go for a lower powered amplifier and not turn it up too far?
7. Damn, i read the thread title as, "How do I get more girls with the function band?, I guess it takes time but would like advice" I didn't really have any good advice for that either, was going to start a "play the guitar or sing" debate... As for the actual topic, i'd definitely agree with quoting higher and then come down, for both wedding and function gigs people want to think they're getting top dollar and they've done a good deal, as it often isn't their money in question.
8. Hi, i have for sale a Yamaha MY16 Mlan expansion card for 01V96, DM1000, 02R96, and DM2000 digital mixing desks, providing 16 channels I/O via Firewire. http://www.mlancentral.com/potm.php These are pretty rare, and if you're lucky enough to find one new they retail at £400+. I'm looking for £300 as it's in perfect condition with manuals, cd's etc. Robin
9. Great pickup with a very useful and flexible preamp. I'm downgrading to the standard Bassmax as i plan to use a mic/transducer combo with a headway. Comes with preamp, stereo lead, tape and instructions. One fo the best slap set-ups around. More info here: http://www.kksound.com/bassmasterrb.html The Label has come off the front of the preamp, however i am currently in the process of getting an image sorted so i can stick on a replacement. Looking for £130, although i won't be selling until i get the replacements setup. Robin
10. I'd agree generally with those above. If you really want to study music for a career, then go to one of the main colleges (Leeds, Birmingham, RCM, Trinity etc.), if you want to grow as a player but have the chance of actually getting a decent job at the end of it then either do another degree and just get involved with music, or do a joint honours degree (allowing you to study what you want of music, and not what you don't want). I can whole heartedly recommend acoustics and music at southampton. You're never going to get the coaching of a proper music college, but you can do composition, studio, performance, ensemble modules etc., whilst getting half an acoustics degree and coming out with a Bsc. Acoustics has a 100% employment from Southampton so you know you've always got a decent job to fall back on. Don't do a university degree if you want to either play or be a composer, the tuition will not be up to that of music colleges (you will basically be at a disadvantage), you'll have to do lots of essay modules (most likely that or the course just won't be that great), and you'll be no better off qualification wise at the end of it. Just my 2 pence.
11. DHA VT1 EQ Bass Drive does what you're looking for also, and the VT2 adds an extra gain stage. Great tone shaping.
12.
I have made a bracket that fits on the bridge for clipping the mic to. If the guy who buys this mic would like it FOC I'll send it.
I'm currently in the process of organising the courier collection of thsi mic. Your offer is very kind sir, i will PM you once i've got the mic in my possession. Did it used to belong to you? Robin
13. Just a feeler at the minute, but if i get the interest I'll probably let them go, just need to check my current projects first. Robin
14. I've got the M 500 and D 200 heads, and 6T, 9B and 4B cabs. As you can guess, i love the stuff. I haven't tried any of the Neo stuff yet, but i love the pyranha drivers. I'd say if you want loud with PJB you can definately get it, it's just not going to be cheap, or possibly light. My M500 6t 9b combo can keep up with any 4x10 i've come across with much better clarity at all volumes. I will say that when trying out any PJB gear don't get too put off by having the master fairly high comparatively, i think a deceptive factor is that (from my personal experience having owned 4x10, 1x5 heads combos etc. of trace and ashdown) the PJB gear will sound sweet and clear all the way upto 10 on the volume control (obviously you can make the cab/amp distort by putting too much into teh preamp etc), whilst i wouldn't dream of turning most amps/combo's above about 6-7 as they generally start to distort etc. quite easily. I bought the 6t and 9b to have a modular combo which could cater for all, then teh 4b becasue if gave me further flexibility (and sounds very sweet being driven hard at lower volumes - suprsiingly deep), then the d 200 as a backup, but also foudn that for most non-rock gigs it had plenty of power - but often beign run high on the master I'd say the Pro's of PJB gear is: -Build quality -Clarity and projection (lots of tiems i've had sound engineers tell me that they've taken me out of the FOH - apart from the subs somtiems - becuase my amp fills the room with a much cleaner/clearer soudn than the PA achieves and they didn't see any point in muddying it (obviously in smaller PA venues)) -Cleanness - alot of people say PJB gear lacks character, however i'd say it's just very true to wahtever you put into it, it highlights floors in your playing and exposes your instrument and finger tone mroe than any other gear 've tried, but this doesn't eman you can't warm that tone up if you want to, it jsut gives you a very clean canvas to start with -I also love the lack of tweeters, i think it's a much more natural sound, and EQ has a much more even response -I love the attacka dn transient response, those drivers pack a serious punch aswell as the crystal clarity and depth, particularly great for slap and finger funk, whilst also having a loevly bowed DB sound Cons: -Heavy -Expensive -Lots of the smaller combo's aren't meant to compete with a markbass etc. small and ridiculously loud combo, they're meant for quieter gigs and studio work whilst keeping the pure tone Definately try before you buy.
15. Hi John, I live in southampton and work just outside of salisbury. Sadly i don't know any teachers in salisbury, but i know a couple in southampton if you're able to make the trip (it's always fun taking a bass on the train). If not i could ask around to see if anyone knows anyone in salisbury area. If you're having trouble with finding someone i do the odd bit of teaching on the side and i'd be happy to give you a couple of starter lessons if we could work out a time that'd suite us both. However as a devonshire boy I find your "location" mildly offensive PM if you want any more details etc. Robin
16. I'd take co2's, the short mic stands, possibly the jbl monitors and some cables if you split. robin
17. Thanks again for the input guys. Firstly, i'm not going to put my double on th eroof of anything (let alone anythign that goes over 30mph). Call me squeemish, but defiantely not! I'm pretty much sure i'm going to try and get hold of a T4 syncro, just trying to ascertain how much worse i can expect the fuel consumption to be. I currently get upto 36mpg out of my current transporter. I'll let you know how the search goes, Robin
18. Another thanks for the advise guys. I'm going to try and check out the forester, and the jeep options, although i'm getting mighty tempted by looking for a syncro, althoguh i might jsut be swapping one problem for another (depending whether it's my particular van that is ebign expensive to run etc., all transporters, or the way i treat it). Just to clarify i'm basically looking for something with ~6' between the back of the front seats and the boot (and no, i'm not actually cutting costs by trying to live in my car ). Robin
19. Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. Does the syncro have a low range gear box? I'm tempted by one, but selling my current T4 as it's fairly high maintenance (partly due to high mileage), so not sure if the syncro is for me. I was looking at the van/long wheelbase Defender 110, but didn't know if it was long enough in the back. Also not sure how well instruments will travel, as i hear they're not known for their airtighness (couldn't think of the right word), or security for that matter. Just to make things difficult i also spend alot of time driving around the country for work (been from southampton to dundee twice in the last 2 weeks), so an ok fuel effiiciency would be nice. Will have a look at the nissan and mitsubishi offers, sadly i don't think keeping vehicles like the CRV in great interior condition for resale will work well for me, not sur eif i could afford one in the first place. Does anyone have a defender lwb that they could measure the back length for me? Thanks again for the advice guys, keep it coming.
20. Hey guys, I know the car question must get asked alot, but i'm looking at specifically 4x4's. I know you can fit a double in virtually any car if you really want to (I know i've had one in a ford Ka etc.), however i may be on the look out for some new transportation, and i need a vehicle that is both a 4x4 (proper, not an estate with 4 wheel drive that can't really go offroad etc.) for my work, and that can fit a double bass in the BACK of the car (ie not protruding over/through the front seats). I currently drive a VW transporter, so have the luxury of a lot of space, however it is becoming too expensive to run and my work nwo requires me to drive offroad from time to time (which is hell in a FF van). I am willing to concede that i'm not going to find something as ideal as the transporter in this format (as in still feeling relatively like a car and being practical for parking etc.), so i'm thinking of getting a trailer for when the full PA/lighting rig comes out, however i don't want to have to take a trailer, or forsake (my always occupied) front seats everytime i've got a quartet jazz gig. So does anyone have much experince getting a double in the back of a 4x4? Does a Defender van fit one? or any kind of discovery? or pickup? Thanks for any contributions in advance, Robin
