Thanks very much Jotto, I’ll have a look 👍, I’m really enjoying these different genres

Thanks to Kiesel FB page have been getting into a startlingly good Country/Chickenpickin' Guitarist called Johnny Hiland. Sweep picking with additional fingernails and loads of Ghost Notes. Not my usual Genre at all but he's a Phenom for sure.

it's a shame Paul McCartney and Elton John don't call it a day as well, but then  I've always thought Elton John was overrated and a lot Macca's output is not me cup of tea either

As per EJ thread, Elton's car crash during recent streamed performance was utterly toe-curling. There's a rather cruel subtitled version doing the rounds on Facebook which is bloody funny.

A lot of fine hip hop and electronica acts are underrated because all non-fans of these genres hear is the lowest common denominator cack that's played on the radio. For example, while mainstream radio  plays 'EDM' dreck (Calvin Harris, David Guetta etc) it never gives airtime to a lot of innovative stuff that emerged in the 90s like Boards of Canada, The Black Dog, Amon Tobin or DJ Shadow.

Some of the Shades of Rhythm tracks, Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto Renegade Soundwave stuff was good too.

So true, I'm on a couple of those facebook groups and love checking out some of the old stuff I'd forgotten about or missed! As I'm off work at the moment I did subscribe to spotify, even though I still prefer the physical CD, because it has been great just to dip into lots of new stuff, and also I found a way to put it through the stereo so can listen on proper speakers 🤘

I am simply using a 2.5mm to phono adaptor into my amp careful with the gain and the stuff via my phone sounds reasonably decent. Got very into the Sahz Trio (jazz fusion) with the 7str Fretless player from Obscura. Plus loads of stuff with Allan Holdsworth on it.

Also a staggering country/chickenpickin' Guitarist called Johnny Hiland via the Kiesel Guitars Group. A change from their usual mindless shredding content.

That's the 'problem' with these sorts of threads, one tends to think of bands that you don't like that are successful as over-rated, whereas they are only successful because to enough people they are making music they want to listen to.
Referencing the posts above, I love Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters but I can accept that others wouldn't, whereas I cannot abide The Clash, Stranglers, Bad Manners, Whitney Houston ( and wannabees), but I don't  consider these acts as overrated, they have very much deserved their success because they've found an audience for their creative output, it's just not me.

The best thing about these threads is finding new material in other peoples 'underrated' selections, IMO. Happy listening everyone.

Same can be said for some of the more interesting Facebook groups. So much stuff that went under the radar. Problem is I then end up spending loads via Discogs. Still like my Stereo System, call me a Luddite. Happy Listening to you too

I'm sure that the managerial problems didn't help, but I don't think that religious strife was a big factor as it only really alienated the Christian rock market, which was hardly crucial to them. I think that their big problem was that they were just too original, which made them difficult to market them successfully.

It was the 'if you knew, you knew' factor that made them a cult favourite, but didn't make it easy for them to appeal to a mass market...!

Saw them at (I think) the Forum with a pal and they were v v good. Latter-day effect is I G.A.S for a Schecter dUg Pinnick Bass and have to console myself with reports that they have awful neck dive.

I must be easily pleased, the only time I've been really underwhelmed by a band ( that I wanted to see, I've seen my fair share of small venue sh*te)  live was Third Eye Blind a few years back. They were well past their peak but I loved the first 3/4 albums, but live they didn't appear to know the audience was there or care. Shame.

Underrated is a tough one because some bands just don't resonate with 'the masses' for some reason so don't get the commercial success I'd thought they deserved, two of my favourite rock acts ever are King's X and Tesla, both of whom could be considered underrated because I think they are way better, within their genre, than many many bands who did a lot better financially.

Kings Cross were bloody good, sounds like managerial problems and religious strife may have done for them. Must check out some Tesla.

So true. I’m reminded of a very sour obituary of John Martin I read. “During a long career he only produced one album that can be regarded as a classic”.

Well I can think of 3 for Martyn, but the later Albums when he was on the sauce with Phil Collins are curate's eggs at best. Still have them cos of his gorgeous Voice.

The most over rated band I have ever seen live was Sigue Sigue Sputnik. They were huge at the time and when we saw them they were terrible. It became clear that Tony James was the only real musician in the band and all the others had been recruited for their image rather than musical prowess They were not tight at all, making mistakes all over the place. It was actually embarrassing to watch. Maybe there was some under lying reason, drugs perhaps but they were rank rotten.

Oh god yes indeed, absolutely. Utter Dross Given the late Magenta Divine was involved I guess large quantities of Narcotics were in the Mix.

  11. Yeah the Ksd has a (knackered) side Jack and think I could live with the r/h Pots. Tell you what though, this Bass is big and HEAVY. 13lbs plus. Might stick the Bart in my VM Jazz, now my only 4 string. At the moment my old Cort and Sire M2 are seeing me through the lockdown. Am endeavouring not to annoy my Neighbours in my block of flats, until my dreams of a somewhat more capable Home Amp come to fruition.

  12. Liked it lots on Passive when. I gave it a go. Pre-Amp is fritzed and electrics in a solder spattered mess. Am grappling with these at present. Will be getting advice on frets once Luthiers reopen, largely leaving the heavy relicing alone as it's real wear'n'tear! It's longer than any bass I've encountered too, good two inches too long to get in my Levy Gig Bag. Have a Bartolini xtct which I may install, but in two minds. As I'm left handed a Glockenklang might be good or just go for an East/Audere. Any Ideas

I'm more tempted to get EZDancer, then I can just sit there with my pint criticising the band!

    😁

Would that we had the opportunity to be doing so. Me and my Pal Don doing our Waldorf and Stadtler Impersonation. That being said on one occasion I did some Snark within earshot of Band's friends and family and finished Pint concurrent with hasty retreat

Or you could input your average bass player's take into the "convert bass to midi" function, then fix all the timing errors by quantising, quantise your original bass player's take and mix the 2 with EZBass covering weird glitches caused by quantising analogue!

I'm kind of tempted, as I have EZ Drummer and EZ Keys already... Just need EZ guitar, then I can be a dancer! 😎

Yup - buy yourself some Maraccas, purchase a lot of "Chemical Refreshment" then change your name to Bez!

This is not going to help then: I've owned two LB75's and a B4, and with the exception of my second LB75 they have all been great.

I bought all of them used, resale value on used Carvins = crap. My DC727 came from Gumtree and belonged to Joaquin Ardiles of Good Tiger, formerly of The Safety Fire. My first LB75 (all-black, ebony board, J-MM pickups) I bought here on Basschat for a very low price because it had some damage to the finish. My B4 also came from Basschat. My latest LB75 was customized, and I didn't like it. Beautiful flamed walnut top and a hidden neck-through, but it just didn't feel right. The previous owner had the lacquer on the neck removed and the neck profile shaved and then tung-oiled, and failed to mention this in the ad. Was a very unpleasant surprise when I found out, and since then the bass just didn't feel right to me.

Correct you're not helping. Tried a new Kiesel Vader a friend from France had last year and I really liked that a lot.. Am contenting myself with doing my Resto Project at home. Once that's done I will see (and start trawling for Leftys again!!!).

Not my photo, but very much my guitar:

    l0mslippl9rumlpfi7m4.thumb.jpg.0c7121665206b4c37a263537432f260e.jpg

It's a Carvin DC727. Controls are volume (push-pull for passive), passive tone, active two-band EQ, 3-way pickup selector, coil split for each pickup individually, and a phase switch. Very versatile guitar, huge range of tones!

Nice. Not too many this side of the pond? Keep on gas ing for the Blue LB75 on Reverb. 5 basses are sufficient. 5 basses are sufficient.............
