1. Hi folks, Here's a little solo improvisation over Autumn Leaves. Hope you enjoy it! Cheers, Kev
 2.
+1 Cracking!... Reminded me a bit of IOU album (in a good way). Must be good if Bilbo didn't say... 'it didn't swing...', or 'would be better on acoustic bass', or 'not enough beards' or 'more elbow patches' p.s. Preston, Glasgow and Lowestoft sounds like the worst tour schedule imaginable.
Thanks Visog! I'm glad that it reminds you of I.O.U. That's one of my favourite albums of all time, so if we can conjure up even a hint of that vibe then I'm very happy On our last tour we did actually manage to play in both Glasgow and Preston. We've never played in Lowestoft though. I think there is a jazz club there so maybe next time! (although I agree, that would be pretty rough few days of driving if they were back to back!)
 3.
Go, Kevin. You have something exceptional on offer there, bro. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Bilbo! Just watched your seven string vid. Sounds really nice! (I'm guessing it's just a camera mic, but the tone still comes through). You manage to get a nice consistent tone across the instrument. I had an eight string for a while but I found it difficult to get a consistent tone, when it sounded nice on the low strings it would be too twangy on the high strings and vice versa. Maybe it was because I like to use very thin strings. I eventually bailed on it and went back to six. I'm still always interested to hear what people are doing with ERBs though. I'll look forward to seeing some more vids
 4. Hi folks, Here's a wee bass solo from a gig back in December of last year. Cheers, Kev
 5. Wow! 'Jacob's Ladder' is really great! I've recently been listening to an early Jason Rebello album called 'A Clearer View', Crampton is on a bunch of tracks. It's a really awesome album and Crampton sounds amazing!
 6.
wow! I like.
Thanks Krysh! Glad you enjoyed it!
 7. Hi folks, Here's a bass solo from a recording I did in October. Cheers, Kev
 8.
58 (mistype). Which freaks me out a little as I had John SCofield Lps with him on from 1980. I hadn't realised until now that he was only 25 when he recorded those!!!
Wow that is pretty scary! Those early Scofield records are amazing! My favourite is probably 'Out Like a Light'. That was a really great sounding trio. Steve Swallow's playing on that record (and on 'Shinola') is really great! I love the way he plays chords behind John's solos. Steve's solo on this track is really beautiful! (I love the repetitive phrase he goes into at the end, really cool )
 9.
That's THE classic PMG line-up for me. All of the PMGs have been good but nothing beats the Metheny/Mays/Egan/Gottlieb quartet for me. I saw them with that line-up at the 1978 Bracknell Jazz Festival and still remember PM on stage with that guitar hanging around his back.
I would have loved to have seen that band live! I really love those early PMG records. Those videos from back then are great too, that band had such a great vibe.
 10.
great stuff Kev have now found you r website and bookmarked and listening to Silvertide - very nice
Thanks Steve! I'm glad you enjoyed the music! (Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on here for a wee while)
Monster musicians indeed, lovely stuff
Thanks Graham!
 11.
So much energy in this performance.
Awesome! I love the way he slams the back of the neck at 0:47!! He's a really wicked player! I love his sound in that vid too. His technique is a bit of a mystery to me How does he do all the crazy fast stuff? is it all just thumbs and plucks?
 12. Hi folks, I was lucky enough to get to do some playing and recording with these monster musicians recently!
 13.
There were a lot of great bassists that appeared in the 90's that seem never to get a mention - Micky Quinn of Supergrass, Alex James of Blur, Colin Greenwood of Radiohead come to mind. Some great and inventive work ('Tracy Jacks' on Parklie has a bafflingly odd but totally perfect line - how did he come up with that?), and though the bands could be called niche (I know that for a lot of people, Blur are a bit Marmite) the bass playing was, I think, very good indeed. I learned a lot from my bedroom years, playing along to Parklife and In It for The Money.
another +1 Yeah, I completely agree. Those guys were playing some really innovative and unique stuff. Great players! Two tracks that come to mind for me are 'Airbag' and 'How to Disappear Completely'. Colin Greenwood's basslines on those tracks are really great!
 14.
For me it's Jimmy Johnson. The best live bass performance (and tone) I have ever witnessed...meeting him afterwards, talking gear and having a dink with Alan Holdsworth topped it off!
+1 Yeah, Jimmy is amazing! Another really great bass player who's done the Holdsworth gig is Skuli Sverrisson. He's also done some great stuff with Ben Monder. I really love his playing in this video. He gets a really beautiful and unique tone.

 16. Hi folks, Here's a video of some clips from a recent gig at the Amersham Arms, New Cross, London. It was a fun gig! Cheers, Kev
 17.
didn't Mark king play on some stuff for Nik to, iirc?
Yeah, he's on this track from Nik's second album 'The Riddle'. It's a great track with some awesome bass playing! I love the way he plays the lick at 0:14 it's super tight! I would love to know if there are any other NK tracks with Mark on bass?
 18. I love this song!! It sounds to me like the bassline uses an open F#. Maybe the bass was tuned up a tone (F#, B, E, A). That would make the bassline a bit easier. It's really hard to get the correct articulation otherwise. Another possibility is that it was played in E but then sped up. I dunno... Do any of you hardcore slap guys on here know how to play it?
 19. I would tend to think of them as basically the same chord but I may decide to voice them differently. With the V7b13 I would be more inclined to put the b13 at the top of the chord to make it stand out, where as with V7+5 I would probably place the #5 lower in the voicing, so it acts as more of an inner voice. It also depends on the context too e.g. I'm generally more aware of these differences during the head of a tune as the chords will have been written with the accompaniment of the tune's melody in mind, whereas during the solos I would interpret the chords more freely. When playing a bassline these differences are less significant. With both chords I would be careful with my use of the natural 5 as it may clash with the b13/#5 particularly in the case of the V7+5 as #5 as the chordal player may place the #5 lower in the voicing. Also, I wouldn't tend to interpret these symbols as shorthand for specific scales as the other extensions may vary e.g. a chord that's labeled b9 may also contain a #9 and a #11 (altered scale) but it's also common for it to contain a natural 11 (phrygian dominant). Also, the 13th is another variable extension with a chord labeled b9, it could be natural (phrygian dominant, diminished half-whole) or it could be flat (altered scale). This same variability applies to V7b13, V7+5 or any other chord symbol. To determine what the other extensions of a given chord are or to find out what scale fits it I would tend to look for clues in the tunes melody, look at the chord's harmonic context (what chords are on either side of it?/is there a tonal centre?), and use my ears. Often you'll find that there is no single answer and just ends up being a matter of choice. I hope that's of some help
 20. There are a whole bunch of scales you can use when playing over a minor ii V i. Here are few options which I like to use :- ii : Locrian, locrian #2, whole-half diminished V : Altered Scale, phrygian-dominant, half-whole diminished, whole-tone i : Dorian, aeolian, melodic minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor #4 Some of these can be a little fiddly but you can definitely get some really nice sounds from them. When I use the whole-half diminished on the ii chord I tend to use it in conjunction with the half-whole diminished on the V chord. They're actually two different modes of the same diminished scale so you can just treat it as one scale for both chords. The melodic minor #4 is another weird one but it can sound really cool. It can work well on any minor chord. I find that it works best if you resolve it to one of the other more consonant minor scales. The phrygian-dominant on the V chord is a really important one to check out and is one which is often overlooked. If you use it in conjunction with the locrian mode on the ii chord and the aeolian mode on the i chord you'll end up with really 'in'/old school sounding ii V i. These are just some of the scales which I find useful but there're plenty more out there worth experimenting with. Hope that's of some help
 21.
Not sure if I ever posted this when we released it... It's a live studio performance with Narcissus: If you don't like self-indulgent jazznoise, look away now.
Nice one Huw! This is wicked! I really like the other vid you guys have up as well (Mirror Stage). Great stuff!
 22.
I was going to post this as ...
Thanks Mike!
 23. Thanks Bilbo! I'm glad you enjoyed Karma Man..that riff is really hard! I find the second bar the most difficult. It's really tricky to play it accurately and evenly. Oh well, I'd better get the old metronome out
 24.
Much as I dislike jazz - and "dislike" is a fairly gentle word in my case - you knocked me out with your playing! I wish I could do 25% of what you're doing there... Amazing. You sir are a virtuoso.
Thanks man!! k
 25.
So proud of my jazzy-funky band just wanted to share these clips from a recent gig - we're at Spice of Life in Soho on 2 May if you want to come and check it out
Nice one Mike! Sounding wicked man!!
