1. How does the thick string gauge feel, does it feel like standard heavy strings or due the composition do they feel lighter?
2. I'm with you Jack, whilst I am learning upright as well I personally see no reason why electric should be ruled out for standards playing. I also agree with you on the matter of electric bass being a different instrument in it's own right and the idea of substituting for double bass not being pleasing one. I fully understand how upright bass has a richer sound and fits the tradition etc, as well as being aesthetically more comfortable in a jazz setting. So as far as business and making money goes I would definitely agree that upright is more benevolent in standard jazz, however if you are pursuing a creative goal and are avoiding this compromise of learning upright bass then go for it (as you are). A good electric player with the right mentality and great rhythm is great to hear on standards, best examples in my opinion being Dario Deidda, Kevin Glasgow and Laurence Cottle, who objectively swing like m*****f***ers. 3.
Pretty cool. Is that a Warwick Thumb you're playing there?
Nah I'm playing my Ibanez SR1006. Although I would very much have loved to of been playing a thumb!
4. Thanks guys I had never actually heard or heard of a vibes and electric bass trio so the instrumentation is quite an exciting thing to be playing with and I can see good things coming for this trio. I may post again soon...
5. Hi all, I just wanted to share this to get your feedback and generally spread the word http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=8Qfg51s59eA What do you think?
6. Okay scrap that, black guitars have some high prices. I think I've been spoilt by the value of Roger Dawson's work on my upright...
7. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'm gonna get in touch with Black Guitars, as they are nearby, and hope for the best. Any other suggestions would still be great.
8. Yeah they're the first guys that come to mind, but I worry that they may also be the most expensive, plus they seem quite busy and I would like to find someone who has time to take real care. But we will see. Still can't wait to see your bass man...
9. Hi everyone, My Yamaha TRB fretless is in pretty poor shape and I need to find a honest and skilled Luthier to sort out some issues and get the bass in shape again. I'm living in central London at the moment so there is quite a range of people to choose from (as I saw in the pinned thread), but I would like your direct recommendations as obviously different luthiers have different specialities and talents. The truss rod seems to be acting up and furthermore the allen key socket just broke after some reckless attempts to sort the neck out, so this is the most important issue to attend to. Aside from that I would like a general going over, tidying and cleaning up electronics as well as a possible fingerboard varnishing. Whether I get all this done is largely dependent on the cost so a reasonably priced Luthier would be fantastic. I eagerly await your recommendations!
10. I think I just over reacted when I read stradivarius, now I have come to my senses on a few levels. Upload some pictures, that would be useful. Any idea where the bass was made?
11. Yeah these guys are badass. The tune Skate U is my favourite one, the organ solo in it makes me go crazy.
12. I recently bought a GK MB200 off Connor and during the transaction it quickly became clear how sound a chap he is. Great attitude and most importantly, awesome wrapping skills.
13.
none of their later material has really grabbed me since moving pictures and signals - too formulaic and lacking in the charisma department - i dont dislike their material and im not against their change of style per se i just think their current style and sound hasnt produced anything of equal merit to the early and mid stuff if you get my drift edit - oops sorry forgot the answer to the original question here it is listen to all 26 mins and tell me if you honestly think that any of the recent albums have any bass lines to compare with this
This is the era that I loved and am now feeling very nostalgic listening to. The ballsy composition (complete with randomly inserted diminished scales) and hilariously typical prog lyrics. Awesome. These are the riffs here.
14.
If it's the same as the EA350, you've blown a surface mount I/C on the pre-amp circuit. It's replaceable if you can find someone who is really good at soldering and has a very steady hand!
Is that I/C as in Integrated Circuit? If so any idea of where the best place is to get one? and what type it is that I need? I am a complete noob in this area you have to understand!
15. Hornsey (near Crouch End), of course I would be prepared to travel to the other side of London to get the best deal and service though.
16.
Try running into the effects return...it will be lower level, but hopefully the power amp is ok and will work. EA may still be able to supply parts (they are a very responsive company). You haven't said which version it is, but that may be the deciding factor in whether its repair or replace
The power amp is fine, I'm using it now to listen to music through the auxiliary input no problem. The serial/ model number is iAmp800A - 1084, It's one of the older black faced amps with a tuner. I'll get in touch with EA now.
17.
Done all the usual? Checked the cables etc? Just thought it should be mentioned good luck, sorry I can't be of more help
Yep, I've checked everything. You can see that the head is not happy even without it plugged into a cab or bass, just because turning the gain up past 9 o'clock causes the overload light to turn on.
18. Hi all, I've just gone and clipped the input to the point of no return on my EA iAmp 800 and I need to know the best place I can get this fixed in London asap (hence posting here as well as in the tech issues forum). If you are curious about the details here's a link to the more descriptive post http://basschat.co.uk/topic/160386-ea-iamp-overload-help/ Any help or ideas would be fantastic!
19. Hi, this afternoon I was messing around with my FX configuration and pulled a jack out at the wrong end (ya know, so it makes a pop), the amp's input level wasn't at all high and nor the volume, yet this normally minor mistake seems to have completely overloaded the preamp. Now when I plug in there is no sound and when I slowly turn the input level up to where I would normally have it, the overload light above the input just glows and the speaker hums - Still no sound from the bass. So, I guess there is no easy fix for anything like this, so I am after recommendations on who would be best to get this fixed by in London. I need it done quickly too as I have just started excepting some important work and I really need my gear to be at it's best... talk about good timing . Plus, If anyone in London has a bass head that they can lend or hire out to me over the time I get this sorted out that would be fantastic, if I get desperate I will post in the general forum as for now I might not have that big a problem. Any ideas / help would be fantastic! Thanks in advance.
20. IMO the music is terrible but the potential of that device is staggering... I wish I had loads of money
21. A year or two ago I was playing a wedding with my old Jazz fusion band, we were approaching the end of our set when a table of people started drunkenly shouting out 'BASS SOLO' along with such suggestions as 'PLAY SOME JACO'... so feeling slightly empowered by this suggestion and the free champagne and the free cake I had ingested in the break, I decided to let them have it. I started doing a medley of improvisation and a few tunes that I could pitch solo on bass. It was going well, and I could see that people were enjoying themselves, the rest of the band left the stage (unfortunately only to intensify the approaching embarrassment)... after what must have been about 5 minutes, I started playing a Portrait of Tracy to please the aforementioned hecklers. I just hit the middle section where the piece gathers a bit of momentum and gains some pulse when I heard a quiet drum beat from behind me - I looked around to see the drum kit vacant, confused I carried on as the drum beat grew louder and louder, I started to groove along to the drums - by which point I had noticed the douche bag DJ bobbing his handle-bar moustachioed face about above his decks - and then suddenly, and infinitely louder than I was playing boomed out 'CEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELAAAABRATTEE GOOD TIMES COME ON!'. For the first time on stage ever, I just stopped playing and simply grasped my face in agony as Kool and the Gang's 'Celebrate' proceeded to sh*t all over me. Drunk punters started jiggling about, meanwhile my band were pissing themselves off stage and some drunken jazz fusionites where looking very offended. From this I have learnt never to trust DJs, especially you have been warned that they are wrecked on a load of cocaine. This was definitely my most embarrassing moment, although I have just began my career and will have plenty more stories in no time I'm sure.
