  1. Hi all I need a truss rod allen key for MIM Precision bass neck headstock end adjustment. Just needs a tweak so not desperate. I've got a whole bunch of allen keys and none seem to fit. Is it imperial measurements? Any kind forum member please post me a link to the right one to by - or measurement - or if you have more than a couple hanging around sell me one directly? I'm in London. thanks R
  2. The pickup pots and loom all came together used so I just used the lot to see what it would be like. Sounds great to me as it is - it seems to have oodles of low end.
  3. I was a big fan of the Jam back in the day and appreciated the kick and rhythmic foundation Bruce Foxton brought to the band. I've been building guitar partscasters - Tels and Strats - for a few years and this is my first bass and I wanted a black and maple precision. All pre-used parts this cost less than £500. 2018 Fender Player Precision neck, 2016 MIM Precision body, USA pickguard, ebonised tru-oiled rosewood thumb rest, Seymour Duncan SPB-1 pickup with CTS pots and Bare Knuckle .22uF paper in oil cap. Gotoh 201B-4 bridge. It's got plenty of thunk and clang on tap. The Rotosound Swing Bass set are in the post, but the D'Addarios on there currently sound very good. Looks great with my early nineties Rickenbacker 330 in Fireglo (final pic).
  4. Stick a maple neck on there and you have a cut price Roger Waters....
  5. 1954 Precision tribute build by the brig with later mods
  6. Hi all. I just acquired this from one of our friends here on the site and it was originally built by @the brig, since modified a few times It is based on a 1954 Precision model with the belly carve. It's not a replica as it has updated elements, but I think it really captures the clean aesthetic of the early P-Bass. You typically see early P basses in sunburst and butterscotch blonde, but I think it looks terrific in white / off white. Warmoth body (ash?) and Mighty Mite neck with a Jazz-type profile where the nut width is 38mm not 42mm medium thick. I think 9.5 radius and medium /or /j frets I think. Full size open backed tuners. Neck has a vintage stain Tru-oil type finish to a light gloss/satin sheen. Body is a light gloss water based poly finish. Seymour Duncan debadged single coil quarter pounder with CTS 250 pots, and a 0.047 cap. Warmoth Bakelite type material scratch plate. High mass through body string bridge that can also top bridge string through. Weight is approx 8.25lbs it's perfectly balanced and feels light. It's got a big thunk and clunk but rolling back the volume and tone it is subtle. I might get a white guard for it too.. or a tort - or both for a look change once in a while. If you have something similar I'd be interested as to whether you have a noise cancelling pickup and what it is. I'm using a Boss NS2 as a gate. I'm a Telecaster fan and have built many so I love this design as it is so complementary and am used to single coils.. Took so photos yesterday so thought I'd share them.
  7. Yes, I think that’s the issue. I just looked up the frequencies chart on them on the Celestion site. They are guitar speakers and voiced as such - and definitely in the mid range space - so they will always be limited in how they handle those true lower frequencies. I should have looked at that first. Duh. I’ve literally zero space for more cabs of any description right now so it is not an option to add more boxes. Seems little point in getting a head without the right speaker choice so I’ll still with into the desk monitoring for now. At least I have a sub woofer in the DAW setup so sounds good through that lot. Good enough for my infrequent bass duties. Thanks all. R
  8. It is indeed all valve. The 50W Master Lead. The clean channel is actually very very serviceable for all sorts. I've had drum machines, keyboard, backing tracks and all kind of crap going through that over the years. "What we used to do" - absolutely! As I said I've done a bunch of covers gigs for a few quid playing bass (actually the '80s). Nothing ever harms the JMP stuff. I mean that head when flying out of the back of a van door once bounced down a hill. I assume it would be shot. But, no. Worked fine. not worried about damaging at all. @Lozz196 God those Ampeg PFs are very, very cute! GAS alert. thanks for the suggestion.
  9. Hi all wise bassists I'm a guitarist with no bass amp rig. but like to play bass sometimes and do my own bass tracks on my DAW recordings. When I play bass I put it through a PodX3 with the Ampeg model into the desk for recording and that actually works very well for recording. I'd like to be able to pay bass through an amp and speaker just for fun, but I don't have a bass amp. I used to play bass sometimes through my 70s 50w Marshall JMP stack in the clean channel. I actually did several gigs with this set up way back when. It was OK but a bit lacking in true bass bottom end. Would the lack of true bass end be the amp or speaker... or both? Can I (effectively) use my Marshall speaker cab (with old 70s Celestion 12 inch greenbacks) for bass with a separate dedicated bass amp head? I have a small music room crammed with gear and have zero space for more cabs but could just add a bass amp head. Also, if so, are there a choice of lightweight bass amp head that might get me close to an Ampeg type sound with a bit tube like growl? Thanks R
  10. Cheers Mark if only all people were so straight to deal with! R
  11. Hi all I've just had a perfect transaction with Sparky Mark. https://www.basschat.co.uk/profile/8010-sparky-mark/ Bought a 54 P bass build bass from him built by @thebrig I'm pretty new to the site so this is very encouraging. I detest most of the revenue and ad-driven big social media, so am a bit wary but this is a great experience. MArk couldn't have been more helpful and charming to deal with. Wholeheartedly recommended! Transact with confidence.. Thank you Mark! https://www.basschat.co.uk/profile/8010-sparky-mark/ R

  16. Hi all Just re-joined here and have been enjoying being a lurker over the years. I'm essentially a guitarist of many decades and had attempts to be full time professional but ended up in debt too far often. Clearly not good enough! I play in a band Bittermoon, mostly Americana and UK covers. write songs and gig sometimes. Also play drums and bass. I make partscaster type guitars. Other interests are IT, photography, politics, cricket, football. Married with kids. I'm a long time member of TDPRI and The Fretboard and post there also under "rze99". I've a couple of basses - a Fender Flea signature Jazz bass which I think is brill - sounds and feels great. Not so keen on pink and mechanical relics but it's a great instrument. I also have an ancient Vintage Stingray copy from when they first started making them. Very capable instrument and sounds good. No Bass amps. Currently interested in buying a Fender Precision bass so let me know if you think I'd be interested. Ideally classic black with a maple neck Cheers and Happy New Year to all R
