  1. Yeah your mapping and values are correct. Don’t know why that’s not working then… sorry for the obvious question but the midi data can actually reach the C4 through your host device? And you’re sending the CC to the midi channel that the C4 is on?

I don’t know how “clever” the Ampero is, but some controllers eg Morningstar let you offset the displayed value given that midi starts at 0 and c4 presets start at 1.

I don’t know if it will help, but sending CC 104 value 0 will engage preset 1 on the C4. Maybe you can program something like “long press loads preset 1, then short press sends ‘increment preset’ CC?

  2. Never heard of the Ampero, just had a skim of the manual! So - does the Ampero provide USB host? If not it probs won’t be able to control the C4. SA Neuro Hub is the usual solution for adding host to the C4 BUT SA are working on a cable that will negate the need for a Hub with C4.

Assuming connection, you’ll first need to map the midi functions you want to use on the C4. Page 42 of the manual https://www.sourceaudio.net/uploads/1/1/5/1/115104065/sa248_c4_synth_user_guidev2.pdf

You’ll need to map increment/decrement to a CC number of your choice. Hint: for on/off functions like engage/bypass toggle use 0 for off and 127 for on…

Basically, send a CC number and value which corresponds to those mapped on the C4 to whatever midi channel the C4 is on and you’re away!

Great gig at the Moorcock in Peterlee last night.

We played a good first set but the backline volume levels went a bit crazy in the second half (typical twin guitarists)!

Nice to be back in a busy venue again after a few poorly attended gigs recently.

Really?!? Two guitarists on stage and the volume went up? You must be mistaken. “Well, I haven’t touched my volume” etc.

My project this weekend is a round of the ever-familiar game ‘Pedalboard real estate Tetris’ - trying to make sense of this rabble... work out how best to manage the signal chain... and hopefully (or should that be 'hopelessly'?) try to fit them onto the board beneath.

There's also an expression pedal for the Xerograph, but I gave-up on fitting that onto the board some time ago...

...all the while, switching between muttering to myself 'I could probably do without *this* octaver' and 'Ooh - there's a bit of space there - I wonder what else I could add?!'

    Time for a new board?!

VERY nice choices on there. But yeah, we all know it’s time for a bigger board now. Stop when two people are needed to carry it?

I really enjoy the whole live gigging experience. Playing with other musicians, actively working with a drummer and changing subtle little things as we play, adjusting amp stuff on the fly, working out how to cover when the singer comes in at the wrong point etc, etc.

I can arrive & be completely set up in under 10 minutes & out the door about half an hour after we've finished. In between playing times I get to spend time nattering with a group of people that have become very close friends.

Wouldn't change it for the world.

Well said. If you’re just playing bass it can be a breeze. As soon as you’ve (I’ve) been unable to help myself and broken out my harmony BVs and PA gear and mixing ‘skills’ in the slightly noddy but hard working covers band I joined back in November then it’s first in last out time again. Sounds proper now though, like 🤓

  6. Yesterday, THAT epic rock sound was done like this for me. The grin on my face, like!

    1mm pick > fresh nickel rounds > neck humbucker > source audio aftershock > 4:1 comp > GK 700RB > Barefaced BB2

  7. Friday was an hour 4-5, then loaning our speakers to a fantastic 8 piece vintage female singing combo (Vera lynn, Andrews sisters etc), then some more between 8 and 10:30.

Bit rusty: drummer had a mare, guitarists not able to hear themselves, the usual nonsense. Dug out some real old ones. Great pub, got fed and watered very nicely! Long and chilly day though.

Saturday eve with the other band cancelled - no punters in all day! Not heartbroken about that really!

  8. I like the classic P bass (and it’s responsible for some of my fave bass playing on various songs by various folks) but never enough to own one. Body’s too big for me, and whilst the sound of the pickup is great I find split designs get in the way of my fingers - terrible technique, I dig in far too hard!

Fender’s Dimension on the other hand will be buried with me. Just enough of a P sound with better ergonomics and no split.

And yeah despite all my basses having them agree with the bridge pickup being no use (for me). Likewise plucking near the bridge. Nah.

need to pick if I want a fuzz or a expression pedal for the sy-200 in the space

Bless yers. I realise that space permits only fuzz or expression, but of course regardless the correct / only permitted answer here is “both”.

Fuzz because dur. And with those pedals you’d be daft NOT to add expression.

    Nice board!!

  10. A decent all in one with DI, preamp, drive, EQ (bonus points for switchable) etc makes sense if you want a bass amp flavour and if in future you go bigger with speakers just get an active speaker or a neutral voiced speaker (eg Barefaced Compact) and a little class D power amp. Loads to choose from: I’d look for a second hand GK Plex personally coz I love GK sounds!

I would guess there’d be some way to jack into the power stage of the GK at church and the keyboard amp and thus bypass the inbuilt pres…. then you’d have your pre sound for both situations, plus a DI with your sound (or clean assuming the preamp pedal supports that sort of routing).

That said: most bass cabs are part of the flavour to some extent. I use Barefaced so they’re pretty tone neutral.

I’m sorry to derail this FS thread with bass lust but dayyyyuuuumm. I’ve never been able to shake the feeling that a souped up slab body tele style 5 string in a funky colour was in my future and this has just confirmed it! The green (is it green?!) fella on the left is lovely!!
