Completed a week of Me and My Girl at the Swan Theatre in Worcester for the ever excellent WODs. Properly old school show, which included the running time, full 3 hours with the interval and long sections of dialogue so concentration after the day job wasn’t always easy. This coupled with the fact the chart pretty looked the same for every song, every conceivable root fifth octave it felt like in every key. Love playing with the band though, great players and camaraderie, will be back for the youth show in August which is Addams Family. Obligatory gear shot- G&L LB100 with chrome flats and nordymute, little mark tube and db 110 cab, one trip to the car!

Massive admiration for any fellow BC’ers that do pit work. That’s some proper skill. The show I’ve been op’ing lights for this week had a lad on bass who used to play with my lad in the school soul/concert band. He was awesome. Like: 21, still at uni, but as good as any bottom end I’ve heard in a west ender. And in my household, that’s a lot of west end shows seen! Good work @scalpy!

We own our own sound and lights which includes two haze machines. One for each side of the stage. It looks great, however most of our big stage gigs provide professional sound and lights.  For smaller gigs our lighting and sound would be overkill.

The pic is from a " tent gig". One of the few gigs where we used our full arsenal of sound & lights.

Nice set up Daryl. Pumpkins aren’t that big this side of the pond!!

    Nice lighting!

It does look good! A haze machine is an excellent investment, just presents lighting nicely. I’ve been operating the lighting desk for a local theatre company this week and I’ve had a REALLY big one to play with.

Have to confess I've always just bought stock items from them rather than going down the custom route, so have avoided any such irritation. Good luck, hope you manage to get the message through eventually!

I know you shouldn’t have to, but draw it in Word or something and send them a PDF?

I just recently converted to playing my 5 string Ibanez GSRM25 Mikro Bass as my main instrument of choice, from my 4 string Mikro Bass, though having a just 28.6" scale length I have it tuned to G standard tuning, that is 3 half steps above the upper 5 strings of a 6 string bass in regular B standard tuning.

So really closer to a baritone guitar tuning wise, but with only 5 strings, wider string spacing (16.5mm), and tonally really sounding more like an actual bass.

I do however play it as you could maybe one imagine would a hybrid between a bass and a baritone guitar.

My point though being that, while I struggled a bit adjusting to it at first, eventually I actually really felt it a relief having that broader range on the fretboard vertically, and it really seems to make a lot of sense that you basically have 3 octaves within hand/finger reach, and gives a lot of freedom.

Here it is, named "Mr. Growley - The Noodlemancer", by the way :

That’s really cool! That tuning with my bands would force me on to all sorts of dusty, untraveled parts of the neck!

  6. To add: with my main band, there’s two guitars and piano/organ/synth (you won’t know him, but he’s called Kevan and he’s a devastating keys player) so when it’s solo time for the lads I tend to drop below E when the key permits. Doubling Kev’s keyboard bari stabs on Mustang Sally with the low C. If you’re doing Brass in Pocket and Summer of 69 properly you need the low D. If you play any modern Country from the last 20 years there’s a good chance it’s a fiver. Etc. I love 5!

That's pretty much what I do. Out of interest, I've just been through the songs in both my bands' current repertoires and found that only two need notes below low E - Song 2 needs low E flat and She Sells Sanctuary needs low D.

But there are a lot more that I do use five-string fingering so I can stay pretty much in one place. It works out like this:

    Total songs: 62

Need notes below low E: 2

I use five-string fingering without dipping below low E: 39

Songs all in the higher registers or five-string fingering more difficult: 21

I really like having the flexibility and being able to stay in one place helps when I'm concentrating on singing.

Absolutely this - nail on head. I’ve played fivers only for at least 23 years if not more. With my main band there’s a lot of call for low B, C and D and with the other band there’s a LOT that’s easier to finger and sing harmonies over if I’m rooted around the fifth fret. For me too, that’s the main appeal. Nice analysis @lozkerr !

  8. Yeah the Schallers are ok but Dunlops are better in my experience.

Great review: the non multi version is in my future for sure. Not averse to multi scale but I know the pickup angle and my thumb wouldn’t get on.

You couldn’t be more correct about the the Nordies unless you were Carey Nordstrand 😀 Had some Big Singles on an SR a while back. Everything a bass pickup should be. Will I sound like Jameson? Defo no. Fine by me.

Ibby 5s (apart from the BTB) are about the skinniest necks and string spacing you’ll find I reckon. I love Ibanez necks in all forms, they are GREAT at necks.

Headstocks are a PITA for the pub gigs I play (mostly tiny) so headless appeals, and approaching 50 means I need to go lighter weight too.

I hope you enjoy the bass… let us know how it performs live!

  9. I’ve got some Earpeace generic plugs: they’re ok. But really, don’t skimp, go custom moulded. I’ve got some old ACS plugs. (I think 27dB) and they’re ace. Must get new moulds / plugs though. Hint: always get your ears syringed and excess internal hair removed first 🤢 It’s STAGGERING the amount of hair in there from a) being old and male and b) haircuts! I might start wearing them when getting the barnet trimmed! 😀
