1. Just wanted to add as well that this instrument is quite capable of keeping up with 6 other mandolins in my band. However, I do use a Phil Jones Briefcase. I love this amp because it is loud enough to turn up but still sound like the sound is coming from my bass. Its difficult to describe what I mean, but before I bought this I very briefly had an AER Amp One. When I plugged into this, the amp was just too loud and powerful, and it was obvious that although I had an acoustic bass in my hand, the sound was coming from the big black box. With the briefcase, I can place it beside me, turn it up so that myself and the rest of the band can hear me, and still feel like the sound is emanating form the sound hole of my bass. I often wonder whether its the smaller speakers of the Briefcase that help it integrate into the acoustic sound more easily?
2. Just want to chip in hear to tell you about my acoustic bass, a custom Brook bass, handmade in Devon by three guys, using all traditional methods. It is called a Lowman. All Brook guitars are named after rivers, so I was delighted to discover there was a river Loman to name my custom bass after. It is based on the body shape and size of a Gibson J200. It has a Engelmann bear claw spruce top, bubinga back and sides, and walnut neck. This is what she sounds like, having just recorded this bass trio today. The tune is a Gordon Duncan bagpipe tune (I am who folk musician who also plays guitar and mandolin. I have arranged several celtic tunes for solo bass) Sorry, don’t know how to embed this in the post Acoustic basses are great fun, and my reasons for owning one are many. I like the way they look, especially with other acoustic instrument, they sound more ‘alive’ than electric basses, and their acoustic nature lets you ‘feel’ the music more, if you know what I mean. 3. What about an actual aclassical guitar bass? http://www.stollguitars.de/en/portfolio/classic-bass-nylon-strings-75-cm-scale-length/ Personally, I use a custom acoustic bass, 4 string, 34” scale, made by Brook. I can play a couple of Bach pieces on it, but my experience with it tells that if ordering a guitar purely for classical and finger style stuff, I would go with a cutaway, and 5 Strings E to C, so that I have that extra string for melodies. 4. I was going to suggest Pinegrove as well. Brilliant little company, excellent straps for a reasonable price Robbie
5. Interesting design- tried one last year in Hobgoblin in Bristol. I’m always a sucker for a good acoustic bass, as thats all I play, but, I found it strange that although plainly acoustic in design, they have very little acoustic volume, barely more than a standard electric really. Didn’t get to hear it plugged in though, and I’m am guessing that is where these probably excel. Some might ask what bother with an acoustic bass that you have to plug in anyway. Some of these people don’t realise that not all of us play with drummers or electric guitarists. I run a mandolin orchestra for instance, where coming on stage with a Fender Jazz would be just plain silly. And lets be honest, Uke basses don’t quite cut the mustard sound wise. So yes, there is very much a place for a high quality acoustic bass, and I am very interested in how Gillette basses develop as, for me, they could do with just a little more acoustic volume to pique my interest. 6. Not sure where you stand with the law on this. Doesn’t sound like good business to me, and there are laws that govern the return of goods within 14 days if ordered over the internet (as I had to remind a well known bass retailer a few months ago). However, as you actually have no goods to return, I don’t know where you stand. It seems to me that if UPS have admitted they have lost it, then you should be entitled to an immediate refund. In any case DV are behaving very poorly in this case. Good luck with it, Rob
7. Sir, your sample is self selecting and utterly biased!! Robbie
8. Yeh that's right, my friend Dave Smith set that venture up, but unfortunately folded when his business partner pulled out. He then put it in Vintage and Rare (who are now a fully fledged Brook dealer). I love mine so much, a five string would be a great addition. E to C I think. I would then convert my Brook to a fretless. Robbie
9. Sorry to resurrect this post again. Does anyone know where this bass is now? The last I saw of it was in Vintage and Rare guitars in Bath, on at an absolutely bargain price. Unfortunately at the time I was due to pick up my own Brook acoustic bass build, so couldn't justify buying it, but this bass still haunts me. Robbie
10. Used them a few times now. Yeh, not every transaction has been brilliant, but when problems do occur they are usually pretty good at sorting them. Robbie
11. She should check out Absolute Music. An awful lot going on there. Robbie
12. Ok withdrawn, I am sending this back to the shop from whence it came. Sorry, Rob
13. Ok, resigned to the fact I'm going to make a huge loss on this, especially given the noticeable cabinet damage. I will sell for £650 if someone can pick it up or arrange a courier. 😑 Rob
14. AER amp one for sale, very good condition. Bought 2nd hand only a couple of weeks ago from Bass Direct. Not really got on with it as it doesn't suit my acoustic bass and is too loud for what I need. Stunning sound though, and comprehensive EQ. Not as light as I thought it was going to be, so pickup from Poole preferred. Could also make it available in Bath. Comes with a long power cable (which bizarrely wasn't supplied by Bass Direct) and an AER tilt system amp prop, which was purchased additionally by myself. Bass Direct only told me there was slight damage to it after I had phoned them up to buy it. It wasn't described on their website. On of the top corner (right hand side as you look at the photo) was cracked in transit from the previous owner (who owned it from new). It has been repaired by them, rather well. I'm going to take a hit on this, so available for just £760
